Nothing resembling riding conditions this morning. Temps on my weather station are -13 and with the wind -19. Ouch.

Still we can discuss all things motorcycling and make plans for the coming riding season. Nice to be back home at ST.N !!

Be careful for what you wish for. This may be the start of an annual event that you will be hosting. I may even try navigating your driveway on a motorcycle for the next one!:p How are things shaping up for the Calgary Motorcycle show? Have a buddy that is interested in going as well. I will get in touch with bubba to iron out the details and either he or I will let you know.

Hot chicks and kool licks man ... we could party all night Banana, try every shooter in the house, stumble out and throw up on Columbia Ave and then head back in for more. I would start screaming ... " Play Slow Motion Rider" ... after yelling that about twenty times the bouncer would come up and say ... "What The Frick is Slow Motion Rider?" ... in my bleary eyed state I would respond. " You know ... it's a classic ... and sing ... "Slow Motion Riider ... The Elevator Guy ...."  as the bouncer still looked perplexed  I would do my best air guitar and chant ... Duh Duh Duh ... Duh Duh Da Da  ... Duh Duh Duh ... Da Da .....  you know that Deep Purple song? "

Then we would stumble out and go for Pizza at Panagogopolis and ... er ...

Ok ... gotcha .... fuddy duddy's r us ....Withstupid

So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I'll sleep when I'm dead

I'm drinking heartbreak motor oil and Bombay gin
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Straight from the bottle, twisted again
I'll sleep when I'm dead

Well, I take this medicine as prescribed
I'll sleep when I'm dead
It don't matter if I get a little tired
I'll sleep when I'm dead

I've got a .38 special up on the shelf
I'll sleep when I'm dead
If I start acting stupid
I'll shoot myself
I'll sleep when I'm dead

So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead

I have it on good authority (Environment Canada  Twofinger) that this Saturday is the big change in weather. I see forecasts through the East and West Kootenay of highs near 10C. Now if we could just have some good rain in that time I think we will see the prospect of riding  just around the corner.  Daylight savings starts on Mar 11 and I am looking forward to the longer afternoons ... ahhh !!!  Cool

Can ya give me a little end of winter dance??   Banana Chili Banana Chili

I was out today as well, saw a lot of bikes...but I wasn't riding, but instead driving the "gravel-resistant" Spitfire!

A few days work, and the car now has working headlights, turn signals to both sides, hood latches that stay latched (well, on the passenger side anyway), I can turn off the heater and adjust the air, etc.  I really wanted to modify something, so I installed a chrome air cleaner off a Harley...

Interestingly enough, I get more comments (far more) and positive reaction to the Spitfire than I've ever gotten on any bike.  Not that I care about comments, but I do notice...

I'll plate the bike by the end of the month, I'd like the roads to be clear of gravel and the passes clear of snow first...meanwhile, I have the little British car...

I didn't see you Bubba. I did the Nancy Greene (damn cold), swung over to the Bombi and then up to New Denver before heading home. I tried to talk my riding partner into doing the full loop but they don't like the New Denver to Kaslo road (go figure  Headscratch) and thought there'd be too much gravel anyway.
Only two bad spots were picking up a drywall screw through the rear (thanx to Kootenay Sleds & $330 I was soon back on the road) and then the radar detector died at New Denver. Have seen lots of constabulary the last few days so just meandered back to Nelson.
Maybe I'll catch you next time. Feel better.

Sounds like you were riding the opposite direction to me. Roget that on the patrols I think I got lucky around Salmo just at the end of the long straight. I do not think I am riding today as this cold has really nailed me and I don't want to spew up the inside of my helmet ...yuk !!! ... (sips neocitran and thinks about the couch and Speed TV.

Note to Kootenay riding folk. May 24th long weekend.

I have it on good authority that the RCMP have brought in a fixed wing aircraft to do highway patrol and crack down on speeding and agressive driving this weekend.

Had a ride today ... did the Bombi and Pass Creek Road. First ride in over three weeks and the biggest problem was finding a boot to fit.

Hope you all had some riding time today, though the weather is a bit odd. Family from Calgary phoned and said they had snow this moring  EEK! Crazy

I am going to ride every day this week and see if in fact I can make the ST.N National in Custer. I have my doubts but I think if I push and find some sort of boot for my right ... I can do it.

Awesome ride up the Bombi ... my GPS says avrg moving speed of 142! Not bad ... eh ?  Twofinger Lol

Thought that was you I saw heading west on Pass Creek, I was going the other direction with some trees in the back of my pickup.

I did get out this morning for a run to Kaslo via Balfour, then over 31A to New Denver and home.  A good ride, although there were already several motorhomes on the road (mostly 4-wheelers, but I did pass a few of the 2-wheel variety). At one point coming into New Denver there was a group of about half a dozen rather scraggly looking mule deer standing in a pullout to the left...of course, as I approached, they suddenly decided to run directly in front of me across the road to the bush on the right.  No problems, I was expecting it, and in fact it was nowhere near as alarming as the guy in the small car waiting on a side road in New Denver, who I swear looked right at me before pulling out right in front of me...I expect it from the deer, but not a licensed driver!

Need a rear tire bad. My Pirelli went away this past weekend. I barely made it home.

I did 97C waay too fast on Thursday evening and on Friday rode Sherman Pass and its new top coat of highly sharp little stones. By the time I got to Kettle Falls I was wonderin if I would make it home. I did and here is the sad result ...

Pilot Roads at Kootenay Sleds ... sit down please ... no .. really ... sit down ... pour yourself a drink.  180 55 17 rear ... ready? ... $349.00
They called back and offered it to me for $279.00 as a leftover and still $17.50 installation  .....  EEK!  I said 249 installed ... no deal. Glad they turned me down cuz I was desperate. Frig ... blah .. blah

I checked online and I can deliver the same tire for $149.00 to anywhere in the US and free shipping. What the Feck ?? I understand the low volume of sales and the cost of keeping stock but I just cannot fathom that price difference. So in the end I can not support my local dealer which is a shame. Still waiting on another quote but it looks like I am

Bubba, although they didn't get quite so bad EEK! my Diablo rear did a similar thing--I thought I had plenty left, but the rear kinda suddenly wore at the center (on a trip as well, of course!)

I get all my tires out of the States, there's a depot just across the Waneta crossing that tons of locals use for all kinds of packages.  Just run down and pick 'em up.  You're right, the price difference is amazing--but don't blame it completely on the dealers, I was speaking to the guys at Playmore Power, and was told tire pricing (well, pricing in general) is a real pain for them.  Apparently, wholesale pricing through Parts Canada is higher in many instances than retail in the States.  I guess we just don't have the market here...  Sux, because I'd like to support my local dealers, but...

I did do a burn out but that was months ago. It was getting quite squared off and I have been riding a fair bit in very hot weather. What I think really killed it was riding from Kelowna to Merritt at a very high average speed of ... coff ... about 175 kmh ... according to my GPS anyhoo. The next day we went over Sherman Pass on 20 and it had been covered with this highly abrasive chip seal for winter driving. It was like riding on 10 grit sandpaper and it was warm again as well.

The tire looked "ok" but it went away fast.

Still waiting on another quote but it looks like I am

 ... tireless in Castlegar .... FECK ! FRIG ! ... drat !!!

Savage Cycle, known as the biggest ripoff around here, charged me 337 for a mounted Pilot Road rear. 42.50 for mounting. I've now seen the on line prices and will definately be going that route from now on. And I'm told action charges 25 bucks to mount a tire.

About two years ago I ordered a little replacement badge for the hardbag on my Triumph. It is a plastic thingy that says ... er .. Triumph ... they charged me $20.00+ something or other at Savage. Last week I ordered another one from PowerSports, a Triumph dealer in Langley ... $6.85 shipped!!  EEK! Bigok
That in a nutshell is why I would never buy anything from Savage cycle again. Now factor in having to look at, let alone talk to,  Mike personality disorder frown face the Mechanic from hell and that is why I shall not tread in that shop again. Their prices on tires, gear and everything is just ferocious.

Jim:

My buddy in Castlegar has a mail service set up across the boarder near you. He has everything sent to the address & picks it up on the weekends, and mules it across. You should inquire, as USA tire prices are the bomb!

Baz, I do the same, and Jim's already clued in Wink

Yeah, much as I'd prefer to support my local dealers, I'll drive to the border an hour away when I can get a pair of tires for less (sometimes significantly less) than a single rear goes for here.  They gotta do something about supply--Parts Canada wholesales to the retailers at prices higher than retail prices in the States.  What's up with that?

Just ordered some tires for alphabetman and myself from http://www.americanmototire.com/.

The cost for a set of Pirelli Strada's is aprox $240 CDN shipped to the boarder. I shall see what the duty is or is not when I drive the 30 mins from here to pick them up. That is a very good price.

Please let us know what the duty that you end up paying is as a percentage of the tire price.  We are very sure we are getting robbed on tire prices here.... (Over $300 for the pair that is on my KLR right now... though I love the tires...)

He includes balancing in the install but thank you for the offer. I will get a piccy of shop and gear for a shameless plug !! Might even buy a snapper ridem mower one of these days too !!  Bigsmile

The price of tires has been a real sore point with me over the past 3 or 4 years. You buy a tire from a local dealer he pulls it out of inventory with a Parts Canada sticker on it. You order it from the states it arrives with a Parts USA sticker on it. You ask the local dealer why so much he says the Americans buy better. I call bull$hit!!!
Everytime I buy a tire I go to my dealer in Vernon and I ask the price, they say $339.00. I tell them I can buy it in the states for $139.00. I tell them they need to complain to Parts Canada he replies there's nothing they can do. The reason they can do nothing is because it's not Parts Canada's fault it's their profit margin that's the problem.
I believe before too long they'll finally get the message once they get tired of mounting US bought tires for everyone in town.

I feel bad when I cannot support my local dealer. I truly wish I could. The tires I picked up today however are a guiltless purchase and kept over $200.00 in my pocket. I don't mind paying a bit more to cover a lower volume of sales but paying 150% more ... take off ... eh !!!  Twofinger

One other question...  Most of the places I have mail-ordered stuff from over the years will not ship to an address different from the one that is the billing address on the credit card you're paying for the goods with.  How do you get around that little fact when ordering goods shipped to an address across the border?
Logged

The site I ordered from allows for this as they have a place to put information if you are not shipping to the billing addy. I simply put in my name, the same as Credit Card billing, over the shipped to addy and voila - no problemo.

A few things I learned at the border

Have a copy of the bill/invoice that shows the value - if you do not, they will hold the items till you produce one. In my case I was let off with a warning.
Be honest on your way into the US as to why you are going there - that was my fastest border crossing in years as they get folks doing this all the time.
As long as these items are for personal use, you have a large chance of paying no duties and often no tax if they are busy. [/li]

There is NO DUTY on MOTORCYCLE tires. Just make sure the customs officer looks for the specific entry. I'd imagine they sometimes lump them in with auto tires.

Had a great ride on what may be the last hot day of the summer.  Met the alpahbetman in Moyie for some Chish and Fips.  A nice ride all around though I missed the ferry from Crawford Bay to Balfour on my ride home and had to wait over an hour and twenty minutes. Also the slowest ride ever from Balfour to Nelson .. ugh I really hate that road. DH1 along the lake was awesome though with no traffic at all and the Triumph was handling beautifully !  Nice ride of just over 400 km. No puckers and no police ... lots, I mean lots of dead skunks though. I must have seen about 8 today  Headscratch ... what is that about ???

Note: Kootenay Pass is being paved on this side and there are the usual bumps, new pavement and grooved areas. Terrible signage too.

Forgot to get a pic of the Triumphs in front of the old pub in Moyie.  Worst coffee of all time btw but pretty good lunch.

On the way back I did a high speed pass of a long line of cars and trucks on the big straight just east of Creston. I was shocked when I checked the GPS upon arriving home. Surely this must be wrong ... I didn't go that fast ... nah  ... no way!! Just goes to show they are not always accurate as I doubt I went any faster than about 200. Would not be good to be stopped by a GPS savvy Mountie !!  ... BTW  the moving average is low because I left the GPS on during the 35 min ferry crossing at 22 kmh.  Rolleyes

A nice but cool moment on Kootenay Pass at about 1C earlier this morning with me all a shiver in my perfed gear and my electric vest left on my work bench at home ...  Lol

You can add an alternate shipping address to your credit card (phone your cc company). Then  when ordering stuff ask them to confirm with cc company, that way they know your cc hasn't been stolen.

Managed about an hour ride this morning. Headed out early as rain is forecast by mid morning. Over the Bombi there was light rain mixed with snow and about +1. A good shakedown for my cold weather gear. I was toasty thanks to heated vest and layers. Still wore my perfed leather though with xcountry ski pants underneath. Works pretty good except around the crotch  EEK! ... lol but I won't get into that !

Salmo to Nelson then Castlegar up to Syringa as it was dry here and now home. If I add my Cordura over my leather I should be toasty to ride out to Kookanusa next weekend. So long as it does not snow.

I was riding a slightly different machine this weekend.  A classic...1966 (I think) John Deere 350 crawler-loader.  Doing some work on the property.

Oh, and I may be riding something else again soon!  Neighbour is keeping some horses at my place for the winter at least (the reason for the "landscaping") Smile  This is gonna be a learning experience for me...
