I don't know when the planning starts, or who even does the planning, but here are a few suggestions from the meet at Custer.
1. Have the meet whenever the lowest traffic volume is available. Custer was a blast and some really neat roads, but way to much passing had to be done! Too many vacationers and travelers.
I was told by some locals that a few weeks after Sturgis is by far the best time for cooler weather and minimum traffic.
2. Here's the hard one! Organize rides in (whatever) area according to uhh... enthusiasm! or maybe
    a. Slower than posted speed limits
    b. Maintain posted speed limits +/-
    c. Push posted limit threshold +/-
So what do you think?

1)  From the past, the board members that are going decide when it it is.  Typically there will be a number of different dates posted in a poll and we vote on 'em and the date range with the most votes wins.

2)  It's really up to the individual to grab a group.  I personally HATE riding in big groups and wouldn't be 'assigned' to a group if it were much more than 5, maybe a max of 10 ppl, but that'd seriously be pushing it.  In the past I've milled around and asked who was going where and what was being done.  So far I have yet to be disappointed finding a good, small 'gazelle' group.  Although I gotta say this year I had an absolute blast even if the speeds were... well... high  Lol  Never out of my comfort zone, but the po-po wouldn't have been very happy.

Unfortunately, any of the 4 places that were decided on a while back (and really any area thats "good") will have lots of RVs and vacationers starting in June.  It's usually really bad in most places starting August.  Colorado was wonderful and WV was also very very good in regards to traffic and rideable roads.  And of course the company was excellent.

I wasn't real fond of the spiders in my cabin at Custer.  Rolleyes  Lol

As for the traffic, I looked for the out of the way roads, like 17 and farther out of town, so I wouldn't have to fight the RVs. Then again, I've been in the area lots of times and had no desire to see the same things as those who hadn't.

I recall the roads around NW Arkansas (next year's meet) as being great. Only real traffic was in Eureka Springs itself.

I don't know when the planning starts, or who even does the planning, but here are a few suggestions from the meet at Custer.

It pretty much comes down to who volunteers to do the planning. It's nice when someone local steps up like Servicerifle did at ESTN. He had some awesome routes planned out for everyone. The more people willing to help with planning the better.

Quote
1. Have the meet whenever the lowest traffic volume is available. Custer was a blast and some really neat roads, but way to much passing had to be done! Too many vacationers and travelers.

Like The Bun said, it comes down to people throwing out dates and then a vote being put up to determine the actual date.

When the time comes for STN 2008, suggest some dates you think would be best and explain why.

Quote
I was told by some locals that a few weeks after Sturgis is by far the best time for cooler weather and minimum traffic.
2. Here's the hard one! Organize rides in (whatever) area according to uhh... enthusiasm! or maybe
    a. Slower than posted speed limits
    b. Maintain posted speed limits +/-
    c. Push posted limit threshold +/-

You saying I was riding too slow for you? Wink I was riding 2-up ya know. Bigsmile Johnny Monsoon was lighting it up after you took off. Too bad you bailed on us early. You might have gotten that "spirited" ride in and not been stuck alongside the road by yourself. LOL

So what do you think?

Scott:

Eric's right! You missed the best ride of the day--down Spearfish Canyon chasing Todd.  We both had to put new tires on last weekend.  What does that tell you?  Hey "Johny" you owe me a Moose Drool for wearing out my tires. (Actually, I think I burned them out on I-90.)

I felt like I stumbled around looking for a riding group at Custer, but realized that I was a newbie and had to meet some folks first.  My guess is that it gets easier to find a riding group as we attend more meets.  I know it would be more fun if I arrived earlier, as I had originally planned.

It was great to meet you and many others in Custer. Come to Eureka Springs in September and let's strafe some RVs & cagers on Highway 62.

No not saying that, You know talking about the pace creates a lot of controversy. What one would call a fast pace another would call slow. Theres nothing any more fun than freight training through the twisties with a couple of buds!

All we really need is someone local who can coordinate things like good locations, bike rental reservations (contacts and such), good roads, and a place to meet. With sufficient notice, we should be able to get a small group together. I know Rita's been itching to go to Europe. This might be her chance Bigsmile

I've been wondering whether the UK guys wanted to have a meet at some point, probably somewhere in the South since the majority live down there. It'd be quite good for some of you guys in the US/Canada to truck over if you can arrange it.

I've been wondering whether the UK guys wanted to have a meet at some point, probably somewhere in the South since the majority live down there.

Actually the previous the UK meets were in the Lake District and North Wales which aren't exactly in the south (and Northern Ireland if you count me going over and visiting Smeggy when we were the only two UK members). There has been talk of Cornwall for a future meet. Anywhere in the UK is pretty close compared to the distances some of the North American members travel to the "National".

I attended 2 out of the 3 last Nat'l and I'm still kicking myself over not making it 3/3.
And, so far, it looks like I'm going to have some kick-ass vacation time. I'm heading west after Eureka Springs, not turning around until I find salt water.

'course, if I steal your GPS you may end up finding it more quickly than you think.

If not, let me just advise "west northwest" because you sure as hell don't want to have anything to do with crossing Texas.   Crazy

That is no joke. I've never crossed the Lone Star State on a bike but I've driven Texarkana to El Paso (or vice-versa) 3 times. The most boring drive ever. I would literally set the cruise controll and then do nothing until I needed gas.

I've ridden the highway from Dallas to Van Horne and wanted to shoot myself starting around Abilene.  Never again.

I literally haven't had a vacation since the 2005 National.  I have over 180 hours of PTO saved up.  I would love to go to the next National.  Well, assuming it's in the US.  hehe.

The Multistrada 1100 S is really starting to grow on me too.  Next Spring, hopefully I'll have another bike.  /sigh

I think your best bet is take I-40 across Oklahoma and Texas to the Rocky mountains.  Sure, it'll be super boring,  but it'll only last a day.  Go North or Northwest, and it won't be much less boring, but will take longer.

Where will the the National meet be in 2008?  Is there some kind of rotation of commonly used spots?  And is it always in June?

I'd like to attend one of these.  Seems like fun.

Custer SD
Arkansas/Ozarks
Colorado/Utah
Somewhere in the Appalachians (WV, VA, TN, NC)

2007 was Custer, so 2008 will be the Ozarks somewhere.

Which is a good thing for me because: it's farther away from home and, it's not Colorado.  =P  That would be funny if I finally get another bike and it's been so long that the National is back in CO.  hehe.

So when and how will the location be decided?  What are the chances of California?  There seems to be a good concentration of ST-Ners out that way.  And, as everyone knows Cali has it all.

Its generally already been decided on a four-meet rotation: Custer, SD; Eureka Springs, AR; Montrose, CO; and somewhere in Virginia (the name is escaping me).

The National is generally more centrally located (Virginia being the exception to accommodate those from the NE). As for California - that's what we have the WCRM for - anyone's invited to that.

It was Canaan Valley, West Virginia in 2006, but the general location is either there or the Smoky Mountains (TN and NC).  I'm thinking that next time the Eastern location comes around (2010) we'll end up further South in the Smoky Mountains.

Maybe it was my bad luck but the room I had at the travelers sucked! water leaking all over the bath floor, the toilet didn't work well, big stains on bed, and worst of all I,m pretty sure someone had pissed on the floor, it reeked. Thumbsdown just my 2 cents.  bete.
Hope theres a better choice than that ,it would suck to ride all the way there to a cess pool room. Thumbsdown

Yeah the place was OK, but I wasn't impressed.  After just attending CSTN I did note that there are dozens of competitors in the near vicinity that may be nicer.

If we don't stay at the Travelers, someone probably needs to start researching another place pronto. I spoke with the manager about the possibility of another large group in June 2008. He said that we should probably think about setting up a block of rooms fairly soon, because he's already starting to reserve group blocks for that time next year.

Yes, ES is a popular place.  We will need to book our time before too long.  Odd about the bad rooms at Travellers.  I remember that someone had a smelly room there in 04.  My wife and I went back there in 05 and stayed in the same room that I had in 04 and it was nice.  I liked the parking lot arrangement, with lots of nice trees and shade.  But, I'm in for whatever.

That may have been the room Krismark had originally.

Wait, that didn't come out right.  I'm pretty sure Kristina doesn't piss on floors.

I mean, Krismark had the only shitty room in our entourage (damp, mildewy) but the rest were fine.  And I think they switched her out after a night.

The room Lurker had at this CSTN meet (right next to the office) was extremely moldy/mildewy, so much so that I could feel the ill effects within 30 seconds. Not sure how he coped with it, benedryl perhaps.
My room was so-so, with a faint piss odor.... I guess for less than $50/night, and the fact that I don't spend much time in the room, Traveler's has been okay for both of my visits. The multiple buildings and big parking lots are a plus, although with the canting I managed to drop the Strom when rocking it off the centerstand.  Rolleyes

The owner regaled me with stories of his interactions with the head of the Hell's Angels when they stayed there for their meet (!) earlier this summer. The Banditos were hanging just outside town and a beating/stabbing ensued. He 'hid' the HA honcho and his bodyguards, closing the hotel and turning off all the lights.

Maybe we could time the next ST.N National to coincide with the Hell's Angels Meet.  Wouldn't that be exciting?!?!  Hey, we could even have "Room Buddies".  One ST.N'er and one HA in each room.  Imagine the stories (and photos).   Lol

We stayed at the Trails Inn this July.  It's two doors down from the travelers.  Our room was cleaner and it was $42 plus tax without any kind of group rate.  I don't know if it's large enough to handle everyone.

I've never stayed at this place, but awesome roads connect to Jasper from every direction.  It's a dry county.

While I was way up in front drinking beer in the parking lot, my wife was trying to sleep.  She said the HD rider next door made more fake noises while getting the big O than any cheesy seventies porn movie.  Then there was a loud buzzing noise for a few minutes.
This is the guy who had real problems with the shirt I wore Saturday, and mentioned it to me.  He wasn't part of our crowd.
I could make so many HD bashing comments but I won't.

I really like the layout of the Traveler's for a large group.  It has so much room and that area with picnic tables.  They let us have a ground floor room so the bike would be close.  Sucks about the cancellations they didn't refund.
Has anyone stayed at the 1876 Inn right across the road?  It looked pretty large, and the breakfast buffet was good.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum.  Looks like a great place.  I didn't see a date in the thread for the STN Nationals next year(or I'm blind and missed it).  I'm planning a trip from CT to Taos next summer to attend WeSTOC.  Like to check this one out as well if the time is right.  Has the date been set yet?

Thanks,

My buddy Dave gave me the shirt.  Picture on back of a lone sportbike in a pack of cruisers.  "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle" written on it.  The HD rider said, "Hey Brother, that shirt ain't right".  I really think if I'd been alone there would have been a fight.  He was not happy.

I wish the HD rider had been around the very next day as we reenacted that very scene.  10 or so Harleys, Dave on his Guzzi, my wife and me on my sprint.  We were on the ferry together coming from MO into AR across Bull Shoals.  I hoped they would be polite and let us go first, like the people in the SUV.  No such luck.  One of them did wave me past politely.  The pirate leader and second mate were doing everything possible to keep me behind.  I thought the second mate was going to go down.

FYI, folks, I'm watching this thread carefully.

And secretly hoping that once I graduate from teachers' college I don't land a "mat-leave replacement" contract lasting until the end of the (high) school year (late June) as that would make it impossible for me to have the time off to be in ES.

Since there seems to be aversion to VA, how about Helen GA. The roads around there are awesome. My dad built a place down there and I have spent some time riding those roads. I think it's some of the best riding there is anywhere Inlove. Helen is a resort town and has tons of rooms.

So, do we figure out precise location/hotel and then the date, or can those two discussions happen concurrently?

Mind you, when it comes to dates, mid-to-late June has pretty much been the standard when it comes to the Nat'l, so the discussion will probably be limitted to the choice of a couple of weekends.

I'm planning on taking a 7 - 9 day trip for the National. Blow a week of vacation and the weekends on either end. Expecting mid-June (as usual). Subject to change, but there is LOTS of great riding between PA and AR. Got to hit VA, NC, TN, etc on the way down and back...
