Talk about sensationalistic.  All those road rash pictures should be taken down.  Wearing even a modicum of gear would reduce that road rash to rasberries or nothing at all.

To be fair, that's one of his first messages to motorcycles: ATGATT.

And I know more than one rider who was wearing at least "a modicum of gear" (name-brand, moto-specific textile gear) and got rashed and/or cut/torn open in a crash.  I'm sure they all fared better than if they hadn't worn any gear, but it's not like it prevented all but trivial injury, either.  No real point there, I just wanted to mention it.  Smile

It's not a bad site.  A lot of gruesome pics, but plenty of good riding tips, too.

Interesting tidbit:

That's a big rise in deaths in less than a decade.

Is it possible that this is due to car's getting safer as well?

Is it possible that this is due to car's getting safer as well?

Sam

I expect that is a large part of the reason.  I was at a safety seminar last week and one whole morning was devoted to the purpose of seatblets, crumple zones, and the occupant protection zone (ie. cage) given by the RCMP.  It was presented along with demonstrations and statistics and was very enlightening.  Then I came home and wanted to go for a ride. Bigsmile

You will die.  I guarantee it!  Like someone said, it could be in your bed.

Risk = Probability x Consequences

I think the Probability is less on a motorcycle.  I won't debate it here, but my empirical testing indicates it to be so.  The consequences are obviously MUCH MUCH MUCH greater.  Therefore the risk is very high indeed.  However, like a lawyer once told me.  "If you want to be safe, stay at home in your basement with the windows covered."  I don't have that sort of attention span.

Vrrrrmmm Vrrrrmmm!  Bigsmile

Oh, dear. Then don't ride, eh? Probably the best thing for you, given all of those dangers.

If these dumb ass Hog loving rubs removed their unhelmeted heads from their leather clad asses and forced our finely corrupted official to maybe pass some strict laws regarding car and motor bike interaction which included some nice hefty fines starting at the $10,000 mark then maybe this shit wouldn't happen.

After looking at all that road rash, I think I'll go ahead and spend the money for the Motoport Kevlar gear which is 5 times more abrasion resistance than leather.

I don't get all these posts of horrible accidents/crashes. If anyone out there does'nt know the possible consequences of riding... Headscratch Me, I never think about that stuff or look at them anymore. I've got a lot of life/death insurance and ride for fun. Thumbsup

The problem is that lots of people dont appear to know the possible consequences of riding.  either that or they dont think it will ever happen to them.  Sites like that are a reminder.  Hopefully it will effect some people enough to wear more and better gear.  Hopefully it will cause those people who dont want to wear gear not to ride at all.  Both are good things.

I think all those squids and stuntaz who wear tanktops when they ride should look at the picture of the dude sitting on the ground with with the fresh road rash, his face twisted in obvious agony.

I gear up when I ride... proper boots, textile jacket, gloves, etc... except for pants.  I simply wear jeans.  Maybe I'm a huge slacker, but I cannot wear my Joe Rocket pants in this Maryland summer heat.

The sad thing is that an "absence of imagination" is where so many young people are developmentally. Being able to take the information learned skinning your knee in the school playground at 8 mph and extrapolate that out to your whole body at 65 mph seems too complex a task for the adolescent or post adolescent mind. If you have ever watched a film of the consequences of car crashes with a group of youth, you will see genuine horror and shock. They are stunned at what can happen to the human body and many vow to never drive again.

The problem is like that of the "scared straight" programs so popular a few years ago. Where kids were exposed to the taughts of prison inmates etc. It did not scare them straight. Because of where they are developmentally the next stage is to flaunt the known consequences and thus appear even more unique, tough and macho by tempting known fate. The scared straight programs backfired and failed almost universally where any real data or research was taken.

So ... showing these pics to most young people is a waste of time. Showing them to older adult, reentry riders, may have some merit.

I like to look at them to remind myself why I have slowed down over the last few years and wear good gear always. I simply cannot afford the time to heal up from these kind of injuries anymore.

You can die in your bed, too. Lot's of people do.

IIRC in a recent year the reported number of deaths from FALLING OUT OF BED  was 600!! EEK!

Deaths due to PEANUT BUTTER Headscratch: 3
If you ride reasonablY, within your limits and ATGATT and are still unlucky, well, at least you're having fun.  Those dead-by-peanut butter dudes could not have been having a good time!

Motorcycling is a death sport.  If you cant accept this fact then you have your head in the sand.  One should not climb on a bike thinking you are as safe as you are in a car.  However you can do a lot to mitigate the risk by wearing the proper gear.  I think this site points these facts out quite well.

Unsure if graph with site name will show up in quote but...I like the site name:  Ride2Die.com

Put it on a T-shirt with STN on the front and I'll take 2, one in funeral black and one in blood red.

Thumbsdown  If you remove the alcohol & no helmet/gear riders from the stats, the fatality numbers probably go down significantly.   Headscratch If you could remove the high speed low skill  squid 'accidents', the numbers would be even lower.
