06+ FJR owners, heat deflector question

Talk to me.  How does the heat deflector thingies work?  I know how they operate...but do they actually do anything?

In actual practice, for the majority of '06 and later owners, the heat deflectors seem to have only a modest affect.

They are supposed to be "out" during summer, and "in" during the colder months.... some say it makes a difference, but a lot of owners say it just about doesn't matter one way or the other.....

I haven't tried mine in the out position yet.  The heat is fine with them in for me.  They are supposed to push the hot air out past a rider's boots a bit more when out.

I used to keep mine out because I mounted a power jack under one of them. I've since moved it, so I closed 'em back up. They look kinda stupid out; like an add on.

Yes.  It does do this, at least for me.

In So Cal in the summer I can notice a big difference.

I messed with them briefly last fall and didn't notice any difference. I haven't had any heat issues with the FJR so I haven't felt the need to touch them since.

What do you mean by "in" and "out"????   They are supposed to open in winter to bring more heat onto the rider, which is out to me.  That is plastic away from the frame.  It works a bit that way but not like an electric vest.

These deflectors are behind the outlets in the fairing that allow radiator air out of the body work.  So when they are in, the hot air stream flows close to the rider's legs.  When they are out, they push the hot air further to the sides, further away from the rider's legs.

I hear what you guys are saying and maybe it's supposed to work that way, but last winter I was riding in 40 degree weather and my legs were getting cold above the knees.  I opened them up and they warmed up.  I didn't have a problem with the lower legs summer or winter.

Update: I tried them with the slot open and MAYBE, just MAYBE, there is less heat on the shins.  I don't feel much of anything coming out of the slot.

We have had an abnormal ammount of hot weather here, and I am very impressed with my 06. In 32 degree celcius (89 F) I feel a bit of warmth on my feet, but that is it. I feel more heat on my legs, with the flaps in the out position

I took an R-1 out for a flogging today, and if you want to feel heat....
