Harley launches new Fat Bob

By Ben Purvis

09 July 2007 16:56

Harley-Davidson has launched its new Dyna Fat Bob with the intention of boost sales in Europe and the UK.

The bike is designed to reflect European custom trends, with a wide 130-section front tyre and twin, streetfighter-style headlights instead of the stretched-out forks and spindly wheels favoured in the States.

Based around the same 1596cc engine as the rest of the Dyna range, but with a new “Tommy Gun” exhaust system, the Fat Bob puts out an impressive 91ftlb of torque at just 3125rpm.

With prices starting at £10,525 it’s the range-topper in the Dyna line-up.
For more details, see MCN on Wednesday.

Interesting to see HD adopting the twin-headlight motif popular on streetfighters and Triumphs.  The twin-headlights immediately call to mind the Triumph Rocket III, but the similarities seem to end there.  While the new Fat Bob has a wide 190-section tire, the Rocket III has a super wide 240-section rear.  But all in all, the Fat Bob has a more "together" look than the Rocket, I'd have to say.

I just wish it wasn't feet-forward and had standard peg placement.

It just seems so squished in, from front to rear.  Like if you were looking at the bike from one of those funhouse mirrors that made you look extra tall.

It's probably partially the angle of the photograph, but then I also like stubby bikes (hence my love for the new gen Speed Triple).

The feet forward placement is a factory option.  The standard pegs are termed "mid mounted".  Got this from the Harley site, ahem...

I have never wanted a cruiser, never mind a Harley, but I like that.  The price isn't ridiculous either, about the same as a VTX 1800 that will lose half of its value in two years.

Well, at least it's better than the Night Rod! That was possibly the worst name for any kind of vehicle, ever. Come to think of it, "Fat boy" doesn't sound all that cool, either... HD have... how should I put it?  unique way with names.

Compared to the essentially meaningless combinations of numbers and letters that everyone else uses I don't think we can get on HD too much for the naming thing.

I'd like to see it in person. It seems to me that most of the harleys look WAY better in person.

At first glance, I'd give it a maybe.

That's a good looking bike and it looks like it may have better ground clearance than the Nightster.
