'04 V11 Sport - Lost Speedo this weekend
«
on:
July 16, 2007, 06:55:25 AM »
I was out for a Saturday morning ride and enjoying the day before it got too freakin' hot when I looked down and noticed my speedo and tripometer had quit working. My tach is fine (I am assuming it's electric) so am I off base when I think I need to replace the speedo cable? I will also post this question over at V11LeMans.com Thanks for you input. Also, can anyone recommend an online source for parts since my nearest dealer is about 4 hours away?

Happened on my V11 too.
Usually is the angle drive, not the speedo or the cable (I have a spare cable, if it can help you).

Forgive my ignorance but is the angle drive the bend coming out of the speedo unit or the cable coming out of the gearbox?
If it is the angle drive is that easily repaired or replaced?

Doesn't your speedo cable attach to the front wheel? I'd check that the drive is seated properly by the front wheel, and that the cable is properly attached to the speedometer itself. The flat bit on the speedo cable needs to be seated properly onto the drive by the wheel in order for it to spin and work the intruments.

The angle drive comes out of the transmission, by your right foot (but higher up), and no, it is not wheel driven.
Looks very easy to replace, mine was replaced under warranty.

Okay, good. Thanks Ken. Unfortunately the nearest Guzzi dealer is over 4 hours away for me so if the unit is bad, I'll have to bite the bullet and pay for another one. Any suggestions for online parts dealers?

Yup, those are the two.
btw, I rode for a while before I had time to schedule my bike in for warranty service. Of course, I bought another bike the day I brought the Guzzi in for service. I would have ridden home on a Norge, but they weren't out yet, so I bought the K12S.

Mine broke this previous weekend at 5014 miles on the way to a BMW rally in Menlo, WA. Called Moto International where I bought the bike last month and they're shipping me out a new one tomorrow. Its a common problem on the original cable but apparently there's a new design that eliminates the sharp bend into the transmission where the break usually occurs.

This just happened to me this morning on the ride into work on my Ballabio as well. So was it the angle drive and is that a seperate piece, or does the whole speedo cable need to be replaced?
Thanks,
Doug

So was it the angle drive and is that a seperate piece, or does the whole speedo cable need to be replaced?
The angle drive is a small plastic gear drive that mounts on top of the transmission where the cable normally attaches. It has the same threads as the rings on the cable. It serves to take much of the bend out of the cable at this point. My understanding is that the '04 V11's do not have it. My bike is a 2003 model, but it has the newer style ITI instruments. I do not know why I have this part. I'm about to replace it for the 2nd time, so if the new and improved cable will allow me to get rid of it, I probably will.

Since my first post above I read on the V11 Lemans Site that the part # of the "new, improved" cable is # 01760481. The new cable I just installed is this one, however, its identical to the one that failed at 5K miles! Ack! I'm wondering if there's any cable that will last more than a few thousand miles.

Mine failed at 16,000 miles. Hopefully the new design will end the trouble for good, or for good as you can get with a Guzzi.
