OH MY GOD. I might finally have a chance to see a MotoGP race, seeing as I can't afford the price gouging at Laguna.

Not really, but one can hope.

If I have to I'll drive over at the butt crack of dawn, spend the day at the races and then drive home.

No F1 race in the US.  Bernie Ecclestone came, negotiated, and decided the US market isn't worth it.

I think there are more places to stay in Indy than there is in that area of Monterey/Salinas. We decided to go to the USGP this year a few months before and had a suite at the Radisson by the airport for $219. We got back to the hotel after the race (once we got out of the parking lot) in about 20 minutes.

We found the Hampton Inns and such for around $129 but much further out. If you got on the outskirts of Indy you could find those rooms for under $100.

Nah, most of the road course is already in place. Just a few mods are required.

Though it looks like they'll need a few miles of airfence.  EEK!

It doesn't look like they have much work to do at all to the course.

They are running the F1 course backwards and added a section in Indy / NASCAR turn 1 or F1 turn 12 to keep the bikes off the banked corners.

I can't to be there next year!

You can get the "general admission" for $75, which gives you access to most points, just not the reserved seating...
Quote
3-DAY GENERAL ADMISSION** (Fri/Sat/Sun)
Good for admission to grounds, viewing mounds, Stand A, Stand C, North Vista,
North Vista Platform (Wheelchair Accessible), Northwest Vista, Paddock Box,
Paddock Reserved, Paddock Platform (Wheelchair Accessible), Southeast Vista,
and Tower Terrace (Sec 39-77 only) . $75.00

Those are all the blue sections on the track diagram above, along with all the grass mound areas...  Pretty good deal, IMO.

Pretty sure I'll be there.

So... if you were to sit in the NW vista, would you be looking through chain link fence to see the riders going down the front straight? If so, I'd imagine that would make it pretty difficult to see.

I haven't actually been to the track, so take this with a grain of salt:  My guess is that the fence will only block the view of those seated lower down.  Get up a little ways and you'll be clear...

When we where there for F1, we walked around on Saturday and checked out the whole length of the F1 track.   The corner 7 stand was a great place to see the cars going though some esses.  The front straight did have some slightly obstructed views but, as said, a few rows up was not a problem.  On race day the F1 ticket sales numbers allowed us to move around a bit (after the "race" stated we really moved around....what a joke!)

So... let me get this straight. If I want a reserved section, like the Corner 7 Terrace, does that mean I'm confined to that one seat all weekend? Or do I also get access to the General Admission area as well?

Looking at the new track map it appears that turn 3 will be right in the middle of what has traditionally been the 'sickle' lot.  I hope they will still allow bikes inside.

Whats the general opinion regading best place to sit?
I called and asked about pit passes and was told that the organizer usually handles such things.  It's possible that once you buy tickets from the speedway, you won't have the opportunity to get in to the pits without having to purchase a whole new set of tickets.  Something to think about...

I was curious about that as well, thanks for the heads up.

My thinking was that if I at least had some tickets I knew I'd be going. I'm guessing if I needed to unload these tickets I'd be able to pretty easily.

Indy holds like a half million people or something like that.  Unless there is a section that is considered prime seating, I don't think there is much to worry about regarding ticket availability.

No tix yet. If you can't find anything in the Indy area, look up in Lafayette, Purdue is there so there's a fair number of hotels. Or along any of the interstates leading into Indy.

High prices? Ha. Have you seen what rooms go for during the MotoGP at Laguna?

Don't forget, with those elevated prices you also get a 3 or 4 night minimum stay. It helps if you drink a lot.

what can I do to help, I live north of the city/track is about one hour away so locally the hotels are I would say begging for bookings and its a short ride in.
Indy has a good set up for race crowds, downtown has activity's for the 500 and brickyard the USGP . I am fully expecting a similar pre-race event type setup for the bikes.
As the news comes out and it  become advertised I will post what and when it is.
So  camp sites, hotels sites of interest and things to do ?
I am looking forward to the new race it will be almost 20 yrs since I have been to a GP.

what can I do to help, I live north of the city/track is about one hour away so locally the hotels are I would say begging for bookings and its a short ride in.
Indy has a good set up for race crowds, downtown has activity's for the 500 and brickyard the USGP . I am fully expecting a similar pre-race event type setup for the bikes.

I haven't purchased my tickets yet or got a hotel room; but there is a group of 7 of us heading west. When the date gets closer we'll have to coordinate and have a big group roll into Indy!!! Do ST-N proud.

Has anyone got their 'application' processed yet? I'd like to know I've got tickets before I make reservations. I'd also like to get a room within 50 miles of track for less than $100 per night. What a freaking crock.  Thumbsdown

I called up Indy to ask about the application process. The abridged version is that since MotoGP is new, they do not expect a sellout. When you filled out the application, you ranked your choices. Mine was in on day one (July 15th? or so) so I was assured that I would almost certainly get my first choice. I was assured that applications to the date of my call ( Sept 15th or so) would almost certainly be filled.

I went ahead and reserved a Days Inn about 15 miles from the track on I-77(?) for about $249.00 for 3 NIGHTS. I stuttered about and go "Excuse me is that my total for 3 nights or per night." Mr. Squid that is your total for all three nights.

I went to MotoGP in Laguna 2006 ( Yea Nicky) and could not find a hotel room a year in advance for less than $250/night and that was up near Satan Cruz somewhere. Rooms in Monterey was minimal $350.00 night. ( I camped at Big Basin State Park near Santa Cruz)

Also, I can cancel my room up to 24 hours before my arrival without penalty. I would go ahead and get a room. There will be tickets surely.

JMHO
YMMV

Anybody got a list of must-do's while at Indy or a GP in general? I want to make sure I do this right in case I never get the opportunity to go to a GP again.
