vaguely bike related: customizing

this is a little side project I got going on....just started, which is quite entertaining IMO.
Its a 69 Toyota Corona 2 door. The owner is Mookie from this forum. He wanted to soup it up and thought I might be the guy to do it.
The original plan was to take out the poopie stock 1.9L push rod motor and tranny, and drop in a hopped up 22R motor and tranny, the motor had been massaged to around 200hp (advertised)
In the discussions of parts necessary, he was originally going to find an intake that would work with an aftermarket downdraft 2 barrel carb that he already had. But after getting all the parts and staring at the flanges, I got to thinking....
I happen to have an extra bank of ZRX carbs at work. I lined them up and wouldn't you know it, the cylinder spacing is identical other than some extra space between 2 & 3
So I kinda talked him into (read: forced him into) letting me make an intake and carb setup to work for this
So I cut up a bank of ZRX carbs, cut up a stock intake, and have just started the machining needed to make this work. This is very early in the process, but you get a pretty good idea what this will look like
The first two pics are with teh stock intake before cutting it. Just showing how well the carbs line up with the holes
after cutting up the intake, I did a small amount of die-grinding to get a straight shot at the carbs. As you can see, I've added a set of ZRX carb boots, which I'll make flanges for
Should be interesting....I'll keep you guys updated

I'll say!
It's too bad the 22R head has those weird square intakes, eventually I'll swap out the head for a nice 20R with some fancy round intakes that ought to flow a bit better.
And if that '75 celica oil pan works out then this thing will actually start getting put together a lot faster than I imagined.

its not very clear from the pics, but the port shape is nearly identical to the carb boot flanges. I will do some minor reshaping of them to make them match perfectly. The reason it doesn't look like it in the pic is because the stock intake runners come off at a sharp angle which makes it look bigger than it is

did a bit of work. Finished mounting the carb boots, port matched them. And welded up the coolant openings that used to go to the t-stat. You can now see how simular the port ID is to the carbs
Now I need to make a hose barb for the remote t-stat.....still debating exactly how I'll do that. I have some ideas.....
and need to connect the carbs. thats a pretty easy bit though and I'll leave it for last

Sounds interesting, keep us posted.
Does the CFM flow of the 200HP 22R match the CFM flow of the ZRX well enough to get the right air pressure in the venturi and the jetting will be within the parameters of the carbs?
You'll have lots of room to mount a turbo on this baby, compared to the bikes you usually work on.
Good luck guys.

Many ZRX owners have produced 160+hp with stock carbs to the rear wheel. Although the engine is quite a bit bigger, and won't rev as high as a ZRX, I think they will flow plenty. I think the port diameters are telling on this, they are nearly identical to the carb diameters.

Nice rule of thumb comparision. HP = airflow I hadn't quite thought of that. The higher R's just allow a smaller displacement engine to pump as much air as a larger displacement engine.
Have fun customizing. I enjoy reading about them.

got some more done tonight. This is going to look a bit odd until you see it on the motor, but bear with me. The t-stat housing was originally part of the intake. With the reconfig'ing, I needed to move it. So I hacked up the intake to seperate the tstat body, and am inserting it in a place thats out of the way of the carbs
Since I don't have the engine at home, I'm taking measurments at work, coming home and welding, and then going to work to see how good my measurements were
So the tstat is mostly done, I finished boxing in the portion I cut off, and I have a tack weld to hold it to the flange, and will box in the coolant chanel assuming everything lines up as it should
I also finished the intake piece that blocks off the old coolant passages that were used with teh stock setup. This probably doesn't look like much, because I didn't take any pics before of what I was working with.....but either way, its done

OK! took some pics of the carbs on the engine. Granted, I completely forgot to take pics of the car.....but I'll do that soon
this was earlier in the day, before I finished welding up everything, but I wanted to give an idea what it looked like on the engine
Then, tonight after work, I finished up the tstat housing, and all the bracketry on the carbs. The carbs are now one piece, with the correct amount of spacing, and the tstat housing is completely done. All I got left is to bolt it all on!

this'll be the last update for a while. Cause the bike-related fabrication is done. I'll probably post some final pics when I finish getting this bad boy all together, and probably some video so you can hear the sweet intake noise.....but thats going to be at least a week away, more likely 2
But here's the final product
and here's a pic of the car, and a pic of the engine comparment seen through the grill

You better turbo that motor or it's gonna be all top end power. With intake runners that short the power band isn't gonna show up for the party until 4-5K rpm.

I know your gonna get the jetting changed. But what are the cam and ignition timing profiles? Exhaust runner length? Port matching? C'mon Bob I wanna see that stuff done right! Seeing a project founder just makes me cringe.
