Thought I'd start it since I didn't see one.  I make no distinctions between 1st and 2nd generation bikes (same with my SV...except while it can be reasonably argued that the 2nd gen FZ1 bikes are prettier, nobody would argue that is true of SVs.  Bigsmile )

www.yamahafz1oa.com is a fantastic resource (and happens to be where I found my lovely bee for sale).

Anyway, let's hear from the other FZ STr's.

Does it count if I used to have one?  Does it count that I still hang with the FZ1 guys & gals over on the other board?

A fantastic bunch of people over there.

Every time I think second bike to get, I keep thinking it would be nice to get a nice dual sport like a Vee Strom, a KLR, or a Uly.  But, I can't get the FZ1 out of my head.  Who needs to venture down unpaved roads anyhow?  Then, I pass some nice unpaved roads and think, it would be nice to have a bike that would allow me to see where that goes!

Time will only tell, but the FZ1 w/ all Givi hard bags would be a blast to tour North America with.  The Daytona could be my short distance blaster and track whore.

Oh, the decisions life throws at us.  Lol

just got one this weekend, a 2004 (faster) blue. can't wait to do some touring on it, I traded in my F4i because I wanted something more comfy. what i didn't realize is that the FZ1 has a ridiculous amount of power compared to any 600 i have ever ridden. there is just an enormous, endless amount of power in every gear at every part of the rev range. makes me go Bigsmile

Hey Grad,

You'll also find that as you get older and beaten down by life, the FZ1 will be there to comfort you, not to torture you.  I love my 05 too.

Just thought I'd "weigh in" here.

I bought a FZ1 in 2001...first year...great bike.  It is kind of a toss up for me whether I "loved" the FZ or the Katana (after pipe and jet kit) more?  I talk more highly of the FZ, and miss it more, so I guess I wins the "love" question?  I'd probably still have it, or a newer one, 'cept for the wheelie "it" did with the wife on the back.  Was a bad day for me all around.  First, I told here it wasnt "planned"...her response..."Oh, so you cant control the bike?"  No No I replied....Second mistake, telling her that having her on the back changed the weigh distribution.."Oh, so you're saying I'm fat?" Normally, I am pretty cleaver getting myself out of tight spots with my wife...not that day.  Thus, today I ride a V Max  Razz

THe Max is nice, but it aint no Katana nor FZ.  Hey, maybe I'll start a Max thread?  Then I'll have a place that only I occupy  Bigok?

  a BIG +1 FZ10A board

Man, where were you when I paid $4200 for my 02 FZ1!!! Yeah mine has Ivans done, AIS removed, carb cooling removed, a Two Brothers carbon fiber pipe and included lowers ... but

now lowers are trashed after an Oct off road experience  Lol and when swapping engine due to my misadventure, this dude was so happy all those extra hoses were removed

my bike is just waiting for shock to come back from Traxxion and new 47t sprocket and she's back on the road   Chili

spent the last 9 weeks tearing her completely apart inspecting for damage ... having to replace motor, shock linkages, exhaust mount mod's, radiator bracket weld, exhaust header, EXUP cables, etc... boy do I know this bke inside and out now!!!  Thanks to the FZ10A board, all my parts came used in great condition at a good price (including the replacement engine), so the financial picture wasn't a complete disaster

see ya, bernie

FZ01A Board...wow, been a long time since I thought about that site!  Three years ago they were a good bunch...and sounds like they still are!  The VMOA is made up of the same kind of people, just different rides and different names  Lol

There is allot of good info for the FZ there, and the folks are great- even the vendors. I called Ivan's last week about the FCE for the 06, and had a great talk- I told him the my 06 was running better since I had changed velocity stacks. when I told him I went to R1 stacks, he asked me why, I told told that all of the dyno sheets showed the power coming on in the upper part of the RPM's. He said he was going to try that and that I should cut the air box. He explained the areas to cut and the reasons why. There are not too many folks in the vendor world that will spend that time with someone who has not bought any thing from you. I am ordering the FCE and his Power Commander module (Fuel and ignition) from him

Is the Ivan device mentioned here the fix for the EFI management issues in the 06?  I found a place which I an get a killer deal on an 06, but would like to know how much this is and how easy it is to install.

Thanks!

Please disregard my previous question.  I found out the answer.  Plus, I hope I'm not going to need it.

I just came home on my new 2007 FZ1 in Cobalt Blue.  I'll have to post up some pictures soon.  I was able to work out a pretty good deal on an 07 plus Yama is offering 0% financing for the first 6 months.  Since I'm on a 24 month payment plan, the payments for the first 6 months will help reduce principal.

Regrading the bike... So far, so good!

Yep the Mr. Ivan with the FCE- I sat and thought about what he was doing, and decided to try some things on my own- So I adjusted both the Primary TPS and the Secondary TPS. I used the diag mode in the shop manual, and adjust the primary to a setting of 18. the standard is 15-18,so I I went to the higher number- Then for the secondary- when I looked at it, it was set all the way to the right, so I moved it 1/32 of an inch to the left. When I took it out for a shake down ride, the throttle response was still great- and a "little less" touchy. So I plan on going back in and going another 32nd of an inch.
I have also cut the air box, and that was a great move. I work at a Yamaha shop, so I plan on re syncing the TPS, and doing the CO sniff this weekend. On these new FZ's we have an air temp sensor on the top of the air box. I plan on playing with that also. My theory is of it was in a cooler location, the engine would run richer- here is a pic of the red one as of this week.

That's a nice looking bike ya got there.

I've got a blue 2004, and I've got a love/hate relationship with it as I do most of my bikes. It's got a tremendous motor, and a great riding position. My issues are with it's heft, suspension, and the unstable feeling it gives me on high speed sweepers.

I think I just need to find the right rear shock settings, and most of my issues will dissapear, but the bike could stand to lose 50-100lbs or so. I'd like to get a full Muzzy or Akro system for it, but it's not in the cards right now. ($)

All in all, a near perfect all-rounder.

That looks like a comfortable seat.  But, I think I like the contours of the Corbin.  http://www.corbin.com/yamaha/fz1modular.shtml

I wonder what the return policy is on these seats.  I would like order both and send the one I don't like back.

Just came back from the Edmonton motorcycle show & thought I would share the latest in official FZ-1 accessories.

The good news is that everything on this bike is an official Yamaha accessory (at least here in Canada) The bad news is that when you add a top case, the total comes to $16,000.00, which is about what I paid for a new 2006 FJR in the crate.

Yea, the Canadian web site has a bit more farkles for the FZ than the US site.

Thanks for the heads up.

http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/accessories/accessory_list.php?model=2137&category=79&group=M

EDIT:  Yamaha wants $720 for a top case, $250 for a rear carrier rack, and $623 for side cases!?  That's a total of $1593 CD or $1,370 USD.   Headscratch EEK!

I can get two Givi side cases, a top case, and all the mounting hardware for about $925 USD from TwistedThrottle.com.

Screw the factory parts.

Yes, they do.  Besides, a full fairing isn't necessary for touring, and I'd much rather have the engine on display.

Question, Givi says the largest tail case you want to put in the FZ is 35 liters.  Do you think that's the 35 liter case in the picture above or the 33 liter?

Well, add me to the list.  I just got home from the dealership and unloaded my leftover 2006 FZ1.

So far that bike feels so right.  I'll have to wait for some better weather to get properly aquainted.  Right now we've got freezing rain and ice.  And there is snow and much colder temps on the way.  But if I give it a week or two the weather is bound to change.

Current miles:  1
Planned mods:  Outlets for heated gear, Micron GP exhaust
Possible mods:  Ivan's FCE if needed, Sargent saddle if needed

Tell me about it.  In order to get the bike home the guys at the dealership and I had to hammer and sweep all the ice out of the bed of my truck to safely load the bike into it.  Once home I had to back the truck up to a slope in my yard and carefully walk the bike down a ramp onto all that icy, crunchy grass.  Then push the bike without letting it slip sideways onto the driveway where it was dry and clear -- from there into the garage.

Buying a new bike is always a little nerve wracking and exciting.  But being in constant danger of dropping it without even having had a chance to ride it made this extra special.   Crazy   Lol

The dealership guys offered to store the bike for me until the weather improved, if getting it home yesterday proved too hard.  I very nearly took them up on that offer, but the forecast was for even worse weather in the coming days.  So if I had been unwilling to take the bike yesterday, then it might have been weeks before I had better chance.

It all worked out.  The bike didn't get dropped or abused.  It is snuggled up in the garage next to my wife's Ducati Monster, available for quick rides should the weather improve.  Of course the FZ has to put up with the Monster (a lustful fella my wife named Joey) hitting on her now...  "Hey.  How you doin'?"   Rolleyes   Lol

Well, I'm glad everything went well.  Last time I saw conditions as you described I was in the ROK (Korea).  Winter 1989 was said by the locals (the older locals) to be the worset they could recall since the cease fire back in the 50's.  I wasnt there in the 50's  Smile, bit I agreed, it was pretty bad.

Your wife "named" her bike?   Lol  I guess I've done something similar...I call my V Max the "wildebeest"...I think the "name" is fitting  Smile

So, you got the "faster" red on?  I'm working on building the courage to let me wife know that we really NEED a second bike.  Local dealer has one 06 left (red) on showroom floor, and I've printed the ebay listing, $6999 "by it now", and Procycle page, $5920 + fees.  I plan on presenting both prints, and if we can come to a "price understanding", and with the wife's permission (of course), see if I cant walk/ride out with it.  THe same shop has drastically reduced prices in the past for dated models..wish me luck!  I checked insurance already, and $253/yr is more than reasonable, and that is without taking into account I already have a bike with Progressive.

Sorry to hear about youre weather challenge...here in VA...if I had wanted to, I could have road yeaterday, with minimum insulation, and today is panning out to be about the same.  Anxious to hear about your first rides.

The new (black Micron GP) exhaust is on the way.  Once I get it through the break in period, I'll see about an FCE to aid the fuel injection.  I'm hoping I won't need it.  Ditto with a Sargent saddle.

My black 2007.......I didn't like the stock Yamaha tank & fairing graphics, so I designed some "Skinny Kenny Yammy Speedblock" graphics to replace them.  Tapeworks made them up for me - I think it came out looking pretty good.

That looks like the tallest windscreen I have seen on an fz1. Has anybody ridden with one on yet?  How much more protection do you get, any buffeting?

I received my Sargent seat today for the FZ1 and took it out for a quick 30 mile test ride.

Impressive!

The seat cups your butt and feels a ton more comfortable than the stock seat.  I think I'm going to really like it.  I got the carbon FX surface w/ a black welt.  The seat fit right out of the box to the bike and looks good.  The quality is what impressed me the most.

I can post pictures later if anyone wants to see it.

Anyone with a smaller frame (5'9", 160lbs) have good suspension settings for their FZ1? ('04) I am having a hell of a time getting the suspension settings right. It feels as if the front and rear are doing all sorts of different things, and on high speed sweepers with bumps the bike get's bent all out of shape.

I feel like the rear end is very soft.

The rear spring is very soft.  Per Traxxion, the bike is sprung for a 90-lb rider.

It is time for the first oil change on my FZ.  I continue to like the bike.  I'm averaging about 40 MPG with the low fuel indicator coming on around 140 miles.  This gives me a safe range of over 160 miles and is fine for me.

Vibration levels while cruising are noticeable, but not bothersome, with most of the vibration felt in the right hand grip and right footpeg.  Otherwise the engine produces smooth, linear power that is on tap in acceptable amounts from 3000 RPMs on up.  The transmission and clutch continue to be light, accurate, and simple to use.

The bike handles fine and rides well.  I find it easy to corner fast without any confidence sapping antics from the bike.  Chicken strips on the rear tire are slightly less than 1/2 inch and I've never had the sense that I was ever pushing myself or the bike very hard.  Nothing hard has scraped the ground yet, so I have no complaints about cornering clearance for street riding.

I found the stock seat to be nicely formed, but the padding was too soft, allowing it to crush down after a short while so that I was sitting on the seat pan.  A Sargent saddle has solved that problem completely.  Although much firmer, it is comfortable for hours at a time.  Although due to its shape, there aren't as many comfortable positions on the seat since it keeps me in pretty much the same place.

I've only ridden the FZ in in cold (or very cool) weather but despite that the wind protection is fine for me with the stock screen.  Although the wind hits me in such a way that my helmet whistles occasionally, which is a new experience.  When near semis on the highway, there is buffetting, but that would be true of most bikes and windscreens.  The bike doesn't feel particularly sensitive to cross winds.  I haven't noticed any engine heat intruding on comfort and given its mostly naked styling I doubt that will be a problem even in warmer weather.

I continue to have one nagging complaint.  My right heel is nearly always in contact with the heat shield for the stock exhaust.  I find that it restricts the placement of my foot and the angle of my ankle.  Although it isn't uncomfortable at all, I still find the intrusion of the exhaust into my personal space irritating.  I'm still looking for an attractive, unobtrusive exhaust that is nearly as quiet as stock.

Nice write up.  I've had mine since December 28, 2006 and have put 850 miles on it.  If I were to write some quick thoughts on it, it would be your post verbatim.  I too have an issue with the heat shield on the can to get in the way of my foot sometimes.  And, the Sargent seat is a must for longer trips!

My mileage has been the same as yours, I agree with you regarding the power coming on at 3K rpm, my chicken strips are the same as yours (and I'll bet they'll nearly be eliminated with some rides in warmer weather), the vibration and wind buffeting is exactly as you've described, and I've not noticed where I'll have any problems with heat issues.

The only other thing I've noticed with mine is the rear suspension is too soft, especially when I have all three hard cases mounted to the rear.  I'll need to add some pre-load.  Also, when luggage is on, I noticed a slight head shake when decelerating at about the 45 mph mark.  Granted, the shake is barley noticeable ONLY when I have a very light grip.  It doesn't cause any problems and I'll bet a little more pre-load will take care of it.  There is no head shake under deceleration when the luggage is off the bike.

I will bet if your shop does a TBS, some of that vibration will go away- I have had my 06 now for over a year now, and when I did my 1st TBS, it was WAY off, and it made a Major difference. That heat shield is a bit big, I went with a Leo Vince exhaust. That solved that problem

Geez. I knew it was soft, but what were they thinking? I need to play with my pre-load a bit. It's not very confidence inspiring right now.

Pre-load adjustment will not change the rate of the spring.  A rear spring was only $90, and it was a snap to install.

No it wont, but if my sag is way off because the spring is soft it will help a bit. I'm going to get my shock rebuilt by California Suspension Works. New Eibach spring, new rebound and compression damping for $350.

Throw in a couple of weight specific front springs and new matching oil and you'll be good to go.

I weigh 160 on 5'7" frame and upgraded to correct rate Traxxion supplied springs (front + new oil and rear) - didn't spend the $ on damping changes  and am pretty content. . I'm sure you'll appreciate the better valving on the shock - it may even prompt you to redo fork valving or add Racetech valving. Next time try Traxxion - they're closer (GA) and are fantastic to work with.

Oh I just live here in Ridgewood, I was born in Brooklyn. Smile

I called Traxxion, and they wanted to sell me a Penske as opposed to rebuilding my shock. I dont need/want height adjustment or a remote preload adjuster, so I can get 90% of the Penske performance out of a rebuilt stock shock with a new spring. I will do constant rate .95 springs up front later this season.

I thought I should chime in also, I have been here for a few months and an FZ1OA member for about 4 years.
I have had 4 FZ1s (02,03 and 04) and this is my 07 with my FJR. I have the best of both worlds!!  Inlove

How's the wind protection on the 07 vs 1st gens and compared to FJR ?

I've been very curious about the above questions... I test rode an 06 and an FJR in Daytona last year but without an extended ride it's hard to get a good feel

I'm an FZ1OA member too -

Hobbes, I didn't know Traxxion wouldn't rebuild shock. Now that I know, I'll have to consider the CSW option. How do you like that shock now and are you considering any valving changes to the forks? I wonder what CSW would charge to revalve the forks?

With the stock windscreen the 1st gen and 2nd gen  are about the same,  I have a Zero Gravity DB on order but like everything else I try to buy its on Back Order!!! As for the FJR The stock screen is great, I did an Iron Butt ride to New Orleans last November and comming back the temps were 45* to 47* for 5 1/2 in the dark and no wind was hitting me with the screen all the way up.

I didn't mean to say they wouldn't rebuild my shock, but they tried to sell me the Penske and they didn't sound like they believed in rebuilding the stock shock. I can see why, but I'm not ready to shell out for a full Penske when I can get a great feeling shock without the bells and whistles for $350.

I should get it back next week and then I'll update you on how it feels.

Hello, I am new to the group and own a 2006 FZ1- can anyone tell me how to adust the TPS and access the mode to change the Primary setting so I can have a smoother transition on the on-off? Also, has anyone here tried to stick a set of cams from an R1 in their machine? my email is tamcevoy@yahoo.com

I am experiencing head shakes through the torque range. Speed is not really a factor. I find she's really stiff, front and back. She's so stiff I feel like I have no shocks. I weigh 185 soaking wet! Any suspension ideas before I play with it. Save me some time and energy please LOL !

I'm not meaning to sound like an ass... but if you could add some more periods between your sentences, it would be a lot easier for me to read.  I'm getting too old like most people on this forum.   Wink

Other than that, welcome aboard!

I just think it's been a long day for me, I'm cranky, and should not take it out on anyone.

Congrats on the FZ.  I'm not sure what the sweet spot is to get the front wheel off the ground, but it seems like the bike really comes alive above 6k.

When I have my Givi's packed down, the front wheel seems to always want to come off the ground.   Lol
