Motorcyclist Gets 3 Years For Speeding
Man Going More Than 160 MPH In School Zone

PHOENIX -- A 20-year-old Mesa, Ariz., motorcyclist was sentenced to three years in prison on Monday for blasting past a school crosswalk at speeds exceeding 160 mph.

Mathew Englebeck was arrested on April 2 after a pursuit and foot chase.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers said they first observed Englebeck on his 2006 Honda CBR motorcycle traveling around 140 mph in morning rush-hour traffic on U.S. 60 near Mesa Drive.

After exiting the freeway, Englebeck then drove through a crosswalk near Whittier Elementary School at more than 160 mph, officers said.

DPS motorcycle officer Mike Fields said at one point the speeding biker was coming right at him.

"Unfortunately the position of my bike, he was able to work his way around it nearly colliding with me as he went off and over the on-ramp and back onto westbound U.S. 60," Fields told Phoenix television station KPHO.

About 30 minutes into the chase, Englebeck abandoned his motorcycle near Rio Salado and the Loop 101 and a foot chase ensued.

Officers said they found Englebeck a short time later in a nearby apartment complex and took him into custody.

KPHO learned that he has riding with a suspended license and has history of wreckless driving.

Officers said Engelbeck told them he was a former racer who was heading for work.

On Aug. 20, he pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and unlawful flight from law enforcement officers.

yeah, well... 160 on the roads isn't speeding. It's nucking futs. Then he evaded.

I say the book they're throwing at him isn't big or heavy enough.

This man got what he deserves.  Speeding in a school area?  Of all the places where an accident is likely to happen AND if that accident happened - how terrible the consequences!
My 2 cents?

1 - speed where appropriate
2 - take responsiblity for actions (don't run from LEOs - be a man and take the whuppin')

I dunno. I think most of us think that _reasonable_ speeds are not for school zones anyway. Most of the in town places I travel have reasonable speeds anyway. In fact, the main street outside our development just had its limit raised from 35 to 40. Pretty cool I think.

How do they know it was 160?  Speed looks like a lot more when it's on a side street compared to the highway.

Good thing they didn't have an airborne unit clocking him, he might have gotten more time for doing 203 instead of 160.

Most of the schools around here have speed bumps so at 160 you could catch some serious air.

3 years for 160mph.  And yet we give Drunk Drivers nothing more than a slap on the wrist for killing someone.

I don't disagree with the penalty - I'm just pissed that the courts would give a harsher penalty for NOT harming someone than for a murderer.

Not to justify this persons actions, but this is a really good point.  It is summer time after all.  I wonder how this factored into the sentencing.  Who am I kidding.  160 in a residential area is pretty insane.

Well I got warned last fall for speeding in a school zone.  Middle of the day, 11AM in a small hick town.  Speed limit was posted as "35 mph, 20 when children present"  I was doing 32 and the SOB came after me.

Apparently "children present" includes "during recess behind a six foot fence 100ft from the road".

Some people get their panties in such a wad about school zones.  At 8AM on Monday in October? Absolutely!   At 9 PM on a Saturday in July?  NO!  Its not a school zone if the school is closed!

160 is a bit excessive, though.

I'd disagree somewhat. Schools have activities at all the times of the year.

Apparently "children present" includes "during recess behind a six foot fence 100ft from the road".

So all the kids are on the playground, perhaps except for the one kid that is late for school, or is going home for some reason, or ... or ...     You can never be absolutely sure that during the school day, or after for that matter, that some kid won't be wandering around outside the playground.  Many schools have playground equipment that kids play on days schools isn't in session even during summer, especially in small, hick towns.

And you did get only a warning.  Quit griping.

It happened in on a Monday in April at 7:00am.

I agree with Mr. Sunshine--the guy was sentenced for felony evasion, not for speeding. The short-bus alum who wrote the story didn't seem to actually understand what he was writing about.

In CA, running from the cops can be charged either as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on circumstances. I'd guess that it's similar in other states.

Even if it happen this week, most of the Phoenix Metro areas have year-round school schedules.  School started back in the middle of July.  We should takes winters off so kids can actually play outside.  When it is over 110, it's hard to tell the kids to outside & play.

The freeway he was speeding on is absolutely packed during rush hour.  So at 140, the guy had to be splitting traffic or running down the medial, which is only about 4-5' wide at most points.  The speed limit is 65, but at rush hour you do about 50 with traffic.
