Get Fuzzy down in Osoyoos
«
on:
August 21, 2007, 05:56:30 PM »
John ( Get Fuzzy ) has crashed in Osoyoos.
Details as yet unknown of exactly where or how.
He is in Kelowna General Hospital with injuries that are serious but not life threatening. The hospital is only giving information to family at this time. A friend of John's is calling his brother this evening for an accurate update and I will post up here after he calls back.
As most of you know this is his second bad crash in less than a year and he had only returned to riding a couple of months ago on his DRZ 400SM and was on his way to Vancouver and eventually Sport Bike North West. Your thoughts and positive energy are most appreciated.
I have few details now, but will post more as I learn concrete information of his condition.

Thanks for posting up, Jim. I was shocked when I read your post - it seems like he just got back on the bike from WCRM I.V!!! I look forward to hearing more details as you get them

That's terrible. So hard to believe. He was one of the people who helped me a lot when I crashed 3 weeks ago. The old hockey duffle bag he gave me to pack all my wrecked bike gear in is sitting in my garage right now.
I really hope he is okay. I have to PM him about this.

Yeah, I'm sorry to hear this also. John was quite enthusiastic about the DRz...I hope he's OK. Hell of a run of bad luck.
I'll head out there when I get a chance, if he can have visitors--I can't make it for at least a week, though, probably longer.

Do you know whether he's able to watch movies/read books/read magazines?
A couple of weeks is a long time to be in the hospital, but I don't want to send DVDs if it would just be more "stuff" for his family to worry about.

Just got off the phone with John's friend who visited him today in hospital in Kelowna. He has a "spinal cord" injury resulting from some compression of his vertebra from the crash. Apparently he has enough use of his legs to walk a bit but is having trouble with his arm mobility and cannot use one hand much at all. The question is the next steps and what recovery he will have and what percentage of mobility will return.
He does not remember the accident but was told that he hit some gravel and was high sided off landing awkwardly as he entered a rest stop east of Osoyoos. It is not the one above the big corner but the one further up Anarchist Pass. No other broken bones, some bruising.
So with some luck and good treatment, I am sure he will improve. His bike will be picked up in the next few days. But he is going to be in hospital for a while receiving treatment.
Better news than I feared.
Rest up GetFuzzy we will see you soon !

Visited John in Kelowna on Monday afternoon. He was doing physio in the pool so I had less time than I would have liked. Passed on well wishes and good thoughts from all of you and he showed me cards he had received from some very kind ST.N folk
He is improving, slowly. He is up and walking around but is still hampered by limited movement in his hands and arms. They are improving, but he is accepting that this will be a longer road than he hoped. It has got to be so tough being where he is given all he has endured this past year. His stoicism is inspiring to be sure.
The crash was indeed on Anarchist Pass above Osoyoos BC. He was pulling into the upper rest stop and was told he high sided after hitting sand - though John does not remember this. The he landed awkwardly and has a contusion of his spine that has caused some damage to the nerves controlling his arms and hands. Pain and numbness lingers and he is on an aggressive rehab program in Kelowna.
His bike remains in Osoyoos and I am going to see what could be done to bring it back. I was trying to stop in on Wed afternoon on my way home to check out his bike, but I could not find the shop. When I finally did it was closed.
Need a truck to get his bike home and stop the mounting costs and worry he has of storage. Any thoughts from locals would be appreciated. It has to be picked up Mon to Fri 9 to 5 ish so that is a pain for us working stiffs. Not sure if it is rideable so ... ???
John has no internet access at this point and asked that I pass on a big thank you to all your well wishes, cards and thoughts. He truly appreciates it.

Kewl ... maybe we can work something out. I will get a message to John next week and see what the plans are for him. I have some 2X10's that would make a good ramp and somewhere I have some tie downs. I will give you a shout after I talk to him.

Glad to hear your back home John. My wife just got back home from the hospital too after having to go in for emergency surgery for a perforated bowel. I've got some sense from her relief at getting home after 5 days in the hospital how relieved you must be to be back home after your much longer stay. Heal quickly.
