Sault Ste Marie --> upstate NY via Canada -- recommended routes?

I've done it once before via Sudbury, but I thought I'd ping people for recommendations. I'm interested in a fun but relatively direct route. I'd rather avoid multi-lane highways except to bypass metropolitan areas.

I could reenter the U.S. at Buffalo, Niagara, Kingston/Watertown, etc.

Any thoughts?

Any long stretches without gas stations or motels? My bike has about a 170 mile cruising range before hitting reserve. I'm not camping on this trip.
