Need some help with good roads in the area. I am leaving early Thursday morning and riding to Lock Haven to meet 3 friends who are riding to Wellsboro tomorrow and meeting me in Lock Haven. I'd like to get several routes from Lock Haven and ending back in Wellsboro where we have hotel reservations. I am thinking about 120 North/east to 1014, then north on 1014 to north on 44. North 44/144 to Rt 6 and east back to Wellsboro.

I have no idea how far that is but I'd like to string together routes in the area that will get us back to Wellsboro after 150-200 miles or so. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Actually, that route sounds pretty good.  Those are all nice roads.  Check the end of the "Better than Deal's Gap in SEPA" thread.  We kind of highjacked that one late last week talking about routes in that area.

Thanks. I did read the Deals Gap post and I picked up Rt 1014. From what I can tell it looks to be about 150 miles or so from Lock Haven.

Here's a route that I have ridden in segments. Since Lock Haven is about
3 hrs round trip from my house so I probably wouldn't do this in one day.
From Lock Haven: 664N to 44E to 973E to Loyalsockville. Then 87NE to
World's End SP, take a break. Leaving World's End take 154NW to
Canton, onto 414W all the way to 287. If you need to you can head North
to Wellsboro now but if you want to ride some more head South to
Salladasburg and take 973W back to 44N and then turn off onto 414N, go
until it meets back with 287 at Morris, then turn North to Wellsboro.
Should be plenty of places to eat if need be but be mindful of your fuel.

I spent Friday night in Wellsboro and arrived on rt 6 from the south via 44/144. Great road, but be aware that the surface seemed to be in the process of being re-done and much of it was covered in a pretty fine gravel that made it a sort of anxious trip. Otherwise it was great.

SLK50 has a nice route there.

654 north from Lock Haven to Haneyville is nicer than 1014, which is a cute little road, but pretty rough in places.

Another suggestion is to take 220 north from Lock Haven, north on 44, take 1014 south to west 120, through Renovo and then 144 north to 44 and then Galeton on rt 6.  144 is a nicer road....44 tends to straightline across the top of the ridge.  Another option is instead of turning north on 144 from route 120, continue on to Kettle Creek Road 4001 up through Kettle Creek State Park.  That joins 144 north at Hammersly Fork.

Enjoy and get back with us on your experience.

Thumbsup The road to Kettle Creek is worth it for the scenery alone
and the pavement is just about perfect, worth the extra miles.

I was up in the area on Saturday and the colors are changing. Not as bright as years past due to the lack of rain but I enjoy riding for miles with such little traffic.

120 to Renovo, 144s of there to 879N, then pick up SR 1011 to 120 e back to Renovo, then 144/44 to 6.

1011 is dead straight and boring, but the ride out on 144 is amazing, and the ride back on 120 along the river killer as well.

Agreed, with the caveat that the part south of Renovo is several magnitudes better than the part north (which is no slouch).
