Warchild, something i have been curious about the new point system of this years rally.
Did the riders know at a certain point during the rally or before the rally began how many points they would need to qualify as a finisher??
I was really rooting for the Ninja 250 guy who flamed out way early and the R 60 rider.
Shame the guy could ride a 400,000 plus mile motorcycle through the entire rally and still not be called an official finisher. Sad
That would kill me.

From Tom Austin's Day -1: First Leg Bonii report:
"Following the rider number assignments, Michael Kneebone explained the information contained on a sheet of paper that every rider had been given entitled, '2007 Iron Butt Rally Medal Levels.' He explained that riders who want to be considered 'finishers' need to try for about 70,000 total points on the first leg, consisting of 50,000 bonus points, 10,000 for a good fuel log, 7,155 points for a rest bonus, and 2,000 points for a call-in bonus. To earn bronze, silver, or gold medals, the required point targets increase significantly."

Yes, the competitors were aware of the levels.  See above.  The R60/6 guy picked up what he needed, 76,000 points, on leg one.  He picked up another 100,000 points on leg two.  He needed another 24,000 points to make the finisher cutoff of 190,000.

Putting together simplistic stats like this can be fairly misleading. IIRC, none of the Hondas and FJRs DNF'd  due to a pure mechanical issue on the part of the bike. For the most part, they did not finish either due to the rider electing to retire, or they crashed, or had some negative outside intervention.

One FJR had his Iron Butt Rally ruined by his dealer, who did a piss-poor job installing his aftermarket stator, and the system fired itself. One ST rider DNF'd due to a split front rim encountered during a little off-road excursion. Another GL1800 crashed on Leg One going down a road he should not have tried, and still several other Wingabagos elected to halt when it became apparent the event was too much for them.

There is always a story behind the number.....

Thanks Dale.  I was too lazy to go through all the daily reports to try to tabulate who pulled out for mechanical issues and who had other concerns.  I'd be curious to see if there are stats about the pure mechanical failures versus the accidentals and rider fatigue.

All I can say is that my hat is off to all the riders the competed wether or not they finished.
