I'd never heard of this until I saw a segment on the Discovery Channel:

Big Bend Open Road Race.

"The April race takes place on US Highway 285 South from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back (about 59.0 miles each way - or 118.0 miles). The Road Runner Open Road Race in October takes place on US Highway 385 south from Ft. Stockton to Marathon."

No motorcycle class  Sad

Maybe someone can pass this on to the people at Deal's Gap  Bigsmile

In the late '80s they had something similar in Baja, but it included bikes. I think it only ran for 2, maybe 3, years and was stopped because of all the biker fatalities/serious injuries. They also ran an event like this in the middle of the Nevada desert, cars only, but then people started hurting/killing themselves and I think the race has "officially" gone away.

The Discovery Channel segment had some in car footage of some high speed sweepers.

eeeeeeh-xcellent Smithers  Bigok

also showed one car that had rolled....looked like a crushed beer can but both passengers survived because of the roll cage.

I can't believe authorities allow this event on federally funded highways  Bigsmile
