I had posted this earlier before the website change, but I figured I would put it back up. Actually cut and pasted from a local board I posted it on.

Been wanting to do an iron butt ride for some time so I finally got a buddy of mine at work to go with me. Everybody else thought is was crazy.

Just the basic 1000 miles within 24 hour ride . My buddy came up from Gilroy and met me in Fremont at 6:30. Got back to Fremont at 3:15ish, 1140 miles later. It was a crazy ride and all in all went very smoothly.
Pretty damn dark up on highways 80 and 50, but fun. Only took a few pics, didn't waste alot of time off the bike.

Certainly learned alot about what your limits are on a bike. This will be the ride to judge all others! Thinking of going to Yellowstone next year. Only 1000 miles away. Piece of cake.

Here's a map of the route, sorry for the poor quality of the route indication. I'm sure doing 1000 miles in 24 hours would be much easier in a different state. We ran into traffic everwhere plus road construction and weather from 85 degrees in Redding to 35 degrees in Tahoe

Congrats.  And yep, that's a huge benefit of doing an IB.  Suddenly distances shrink and what was once a major consideration now simply means that I might hafta get a room... Smile

Congrats on the ride!  It looks simular to some of the past Cal 24 routes.  So tell us now that you did it, was it easier, harder or about what you expected it to be?  What did you learn from it?  Do you want to do another one?

Parts of it were easier than I thought, but overall I went in thinking it was going to be REALLY hard. The hardest part was a going across highway 152 to Gilroy. Pitch black, windy as hell and starting to feel exhaustion set in. I slowed up quite a bit in that section.

I learned alot. How far I can ride in one sitting till I need to get off and stretch (which is longer than my tank of gas holds out), you don't need a windscreen or wind protection to do one of these rides, how hard I need to push myself to finish what I started, how to better manage time during stops and pick roads to travel, and be prepared for a wide range of temps and conditions when going out for that long of a stretch (I was more than prepared)

There will definitely be another one somewhere in the future.

GAME ON!

It's funny, after I completed my SS1k all mileages just seemed to become pretty insignificant.

500 mile day in the twisties?  No problem.  400 miles for a cup of joe?  Sure.

I was talking to my boss the other day - planning a business trip.  I fly into Arizona, rent a car, and cover 200 miles.  The boss is saying "that's just nuts!", and I'm like "huh?  What do you mean?".  200 miles barely gets the oil warmed up anymore.

I'm borrowing my my friend Greg's ZX6r for an experiment in riding positions.  His only real comment to me was "I just changed the oil, so if you break 4,000 miles before you return it, just change the oil for me."

Greg and I did an SS1k together...

He's got my RSL right now.  I kinda expect the bike to come back with bald tires and another couple thousand on the odo. Heck, we're only swapping bikes for a week...

Without meaning to get off topic but in a similar vein.

My mother was one of three daughters, the last of the three passed away early yesterday morning at age 76. They live 1200klms from me, (about 720m) and I told my cousins I would ride down on Thursday evening for the funeral which is set at 9.30am Friday. They think its nuts, I hardly gave it a second thought and all I need is fuel and I am ok to leave.

This is where being able to do the distances really helps, at a moments notice most of us can and do travel 1000m and beyond without hesitation.

Good on ya for getting it done!

I was seriously contemplating doing it going out to visit my friends in Atlanta. (its 850min to get there) but opted out due to the temp when I left the house (28*F) wound up just doing the 850.
I think the other 150+ wouldn't be that big of a challenge, its just not that much further.

they are bugging me to come visit them again, so I'll just have to adjust my route a bit for the extra distance and go Wink
