I recently downloaded routes created by a friend that he had plotted for an upcoming trip. When I try to navigate the route I am told that "The route does not match the available maps, would I like to recalculate" & " it may not follow the roads exactly"

I am pretty sure that the GPS savvy folks on this site are familiar w/ the message or have at least seen it before.

I understand this means that the maps on my unit are out of date & my friend's maps are newer. What I am wondering is if I do not re-calculate, will my unit follow his intended route as long as the same streets appear in both my map version & his newer map version?

If this information will help: My maps come from City Select, North America V6 & his by the same name V6.12.4.

Thanks in advance. Having a time getting any kind of answer from the Garmin gods. I knew there was a lot of GPS knowledge here & figured that I may ask in hopes of an answer.

The short answer is "maybe"....sorry. It appears from the numbers you've quoted that you're referring to the Mapsource version. The map data version (and release name) can be found in two places:
Menu_Help_About Mapsource_Product Info will tell you what versions are installed. The dropdown list in the toolbar should tell you what version is currently in use. If the two mapset versions are close you may be OK depending on how many changes/corrections there have been between versions. This is also area dependent. I've had it go either way, but usually a recalc means a different route.

One way to correct the problem is to load the routes on your computer and then recalc there with your maps. If there are any deviations they can be corrected and then loaded to the GPSr.

Er, more likely "not an issue", so long as there are enough waypoints to anchor the route.  The message you're seeing comes from a difference in map formatting and Garmin is basically doing the CYA thing by complaining.  But I suspect that the routes will come out the same when you're done.  Or at least you'll have a hint that you may need to patch a route segment or two.

And as long as the two units are set to recalc in the same manner, distance, time, and don't forget that the 276C has a custom recalc feature that is user input dependent.  My experience in N. California with exactly this issue had my unit demanding a U-turn while my riding partner continued blissfully along. Do the computer recalc first before you trust the GPSr to do what you think it should.

Not sure if it is applicable here but I had this same error message on my Quest when I managed to corrupt the data in my GPS and it had to resort to using the base maps. I was in the middle of France at the time and it was telling me to "drive south for 200 miles" as it's approximation... Errr, which road shall I take oh wise and wonderful GPS? Headscratch
Good job I don't rely on the GPS and make sure I've planned my route on a real map and written directions down Razz Reloading the mapping data onto the unit from Mapsource solved the problem.

It might be conflicting map versions but I'd re-upload the maps to your unit for shits and giggles. If nothing else it rules that out as an issue Shrug

I get the same message on my 60C after plotting on the computer.  I think it has to do with the older units having different algorithms for calculating routes.  It is irritating at times--not enough to replace the 60C yet, but I'm getting close.

All the roads are there, it's just that the unit calcs a different route for the same set of waypoints.

Make sure you've downloaded the detailed maps for the area your routing in. I've found mine does this when I've done a route on the PC and didn't download the details for that area to the 276.

It is my understanding that the 276c will accept a route plotted on the computer as long as the map set in the computer is the same edition as the map set in the gps. The 276c will not recalculate the route with its own parameters unless you make it do so. It will take you along the route you uploaded from the computer.

It is also my understanding that the 60 series units will recalculate the uploaded route regardless of what you want. The only way you can guarantee the 60 will take you on same route as the one you plotted on the computer is to put a lot of waypoints in it. In my opinion, this is a serious shortcoming of the 60 series, and yes, it is very aggravating.
