Hello all, I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm setting up a trip around the country and I need a scenic route from NC129 by the dragon to Savannah Ga.. I have the map and trip background at http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,13393.0.html
If there are some interesting sights, local stops, and good roads in this area, that would be great. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I will be adjusting the map that is in the aforementioned thread and will post the new one soon.

Thanks, Panther,(Bry)

There are TONS of great roads in the area...
You can take the Cherohala over to Tellico then take TN68 to GA60 south through Morganton and Suches to Dahlonega,
You can take Cherohala to TN68 North to 39, West to 315, South to 30, South to 74, South East to TN68, South to GA60 to Dahlonega
You can take 28 over to Franklin / Highlands, to Warwoman Road and take that West to Clayton, then take 76W to 197S, to 356W to Helen, then 75ALT to 348N (Richard B Russel) to, 180W to US129S (Blood Mountain) to US19W/S to Dahlonega.

ETA: Send me a PM, I'll give you a hundred different routes from Robbinsville to Atlanta including these and other roads, plus Fort Mountain. Once you get to ATL you are on your own, because I always trailer up to at least there.

The skies the limit as far as roads go from Deals Gap all the way down to I-85. Once at the interstate, I would follow the Savannah river as much as possible. I would stay clear of Atlanta and the (outlying areas as well) You might consider working your way over towards Hartwell, GA then cross into South Carolina. Grab SC81 (a nice remote excellent pavement windy scenic road) and take it south all the way to Augusta. A few interesting towns along the way, one of them being downtown historic Abbeville, SC...which is not far from 81. Bear off onto SC71 (also a nice remote road) and run it straight into downtown Abbeville. Worth a stop and walk around. Theo's and The Village Grill are good eats, as well as are a few Mennonite run restaurants (The Dutch Oven in town, and Yoders just on the outskirts. All highly rated by the locals...large portions and resonable$$. The Opera House is worth seeing also....lots of civil war history too. Once back on 81 you'll pass through McCormick and then south of that you come upon Strom Thurmond Lake. Lots of state parks and recreation areas, as well as the BIG dam a few miles off of 81 on US221 Worth a visit.

SC Hwy81, Abbeville, SC, and the Strom Thurmond Lake area are my recommendations for something scenic. Wink

If you have the time to ride, take 129 south to Blairsville then take US 76 east to Clayton Ga.  After you go through Hiawassee Ga on US 76 you get into some great sweepers that are fun.  About 17 miles east of Hiawassee is Hwy 197 south. Take that and hold on for more great twisties that will make you forget about the Dragon  Lol  Hwy 197 takes you down to Clarkesville GA.  Be careful when you see a sign "DIP AHEAD" slow down because it is really a dip and a lot of times there is water flowing over the road.   Once you get to Clarksville the fun is basically over.  From Clarkesville take Hwy 197 south to US 23 east or north until you get to Hwy 17.  17 will take you into Savannah, boring but two lane all the way.  Just be careful in most small towns, especially Register as they have speed traps set up, and don't ask how I know  Crazy

I live outside Savannah and have been that route way too many times.

Actually, if time is not a concern, take this route from the store at the Dragon.

Go east on NC 28 until dead ends on US 74 and go east (left) a few miles until you get to NC 28 south towards Franklin NC. Once in Franklin go east on US 64 to Highlands, then take NC 28 south.  Approx 12 miles south of Highlands on the right is Warwoman road, it is a sharp turn back to the right so be careful.  This is another great twistie road.  That will take you into Clayton. If you still got time take US 76 west until you get to GA 197 south.  There are some great sweepers from Clayton to GA 197 also.

Thanks folks, took the info and googled it together. Lots of twisties and a little bit of history, always works for me. I'll be posting a ride report when I start the trip in the spring. Thanks again, Bry (Panther)

2 words..Google Maps!

Here's my next weeks ride up from Dayton to Atlanta...Click the link below.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=11114687289709315267,29.954935,-82.122803%3B10387851884194496862,32.491230,-82.315063%3B13961586181265820838,33.870416,-83.144531%3B2442454634089128650,34.179998,-83.693848%3B16373844299683409974,34.347971,-83.924561&saddr=daytona+beach,+fl&daddr=W+Madison+St%2FSR-100+%4029.944140,+-82.112730+to:US-1+%4032.462790,+-82.301130+to:Atlanta+St%2FUS-78+%4033.869710,+-83.111820+to:GA-53+%4034.326430,+-83.887100+to:cumming,ga&mrcr=3&mra=mr&dirflg=h&sll=34.279914,-82.479858&sspn=2.296641,5.108643&ie=UTF8&ll=33.070829,-82.187347&spn=0.58231,1.277161&z=10&om=1

The ability to drag the route, and change it anyway you want is truly amazing...

Any tips on this run from the crowd?

Let me know...
