I've been hanging around the Duc/MV dealer here, checking out the ST3 (they have a demo 06 ST3s for 13k w/900 miles) and the Multi, trying to figure out if its for me. I found it to be much smoother than I thought a twin would be, coming from triple's and I4's, but the sound at idle did nothing for me. So I thought maybe it made up for the sound at idle at higher rpm's and/or with different pipes. So with the help of my handy search engine, I found these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZQgNZ3gBmM&mode=related&search=   (atgatt people: warning!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_IUtvU5su0&mode=related&search=

...I think I'm starting to get it. Bigok

Yep, that's what my Multi sounds like with the Staintune exhaust on it.  The stock exhaust has a premuffler which really takes a lot of DBs out of the exhaust note.

Who makes a better sounding - not obnoxious -  pipes for the ST3? Will the FI compensate enough, or will the FI need to be remapped?

The ST3 has the smoothest running motor I've ever ridden so long as you don't hang out at 5K RPM.  It's just enough to let you know it alive.

The Remus has a nice sound and you have a choice in dbls. If you leave the insert in the mufflers, it meets Euro noise standards. No change in mapping necessary.
The one I like is the Arrow. I have only heard it on an Aprilia, but it sounded so nice. Not too loud, but definitely an improvement. Looks cool too.
I am going to get an Arrows header pipe first. From what I have read, eliminating the presilencer on the Multi improves the sound, but no mapping required. If it isn't what I want, there is  still have the option of putting a number of different "silencers" Wink on.
oops, These don't apply to the ST3 Rolleyes

If you just add slip ons they dealer can trim the FI enough to compensate.  It is when you make mods to the airbox that a remap or Power Commander is needed.

BTW, the Sil Ti slip ons on my ST4s sound awesome.

I've got Staintune head pipes and pre-muffler eliminator with the Termignoni muffler, on my Multistrada, great sound deep, not obnoxious.

I had my dealer (Cliff's Cycle Revolution) install the factory carbon fiber exahusts on my 06 ST3.  They sound great and you don't have to coast by the cops.

 Buy it !

My ST4s has been great..... there are motorcycles that you own
and motorcycles that you *love* ..... I love my Ducati.

The Staintune cans were a nice add ..... spuds in for touring and
for the occasional SUnday romp ..... spuds out and let 'er roar.

For me the sound I really got during the test ride of the ST3 was the intake sound(the bike had stock pipes).  I could start to get a hint of the sound that I remember hearing the Ducati 998's made when I watch WSB at Laguna.  That was freaking cool.  Thumbsup

And yea 5k rpm has a nasty flat spot.  It can be tuned out but its there from the factory.

My wife does very little riding with and she really did not like pillion on the ST3.  Her back is trashed.  The only ride for her is a Wing.  Saving that for retirement.

Maybe something like a FJR or ST?

Now you're on to something here.  Someone must have mentioned the MS.  That top case looks great (or maybe it's just the passenger Bigsmile) with the MS and the ergos would be perfect.  All Duc and save your back.
