I recently sold my DR-Z400SM and have been sorry ever since. But I'm looking forward to the release of the Yamaha WR250X and am thinking about possibly purchasing one. My dilemma is that I want a supermoto for the street but at the same time I want to be able to do some trail riding with it. Ideally, I would get an extra set of wheels, tires, rotors with DOT knobbies on them that I could change out depending on where I wanted to go. The problem was that no one made a decent set of off-road tires in 17" sizes. There were very few choices back when I looked into this a couple of years ago, but they were dual-purpose tires for use mainly on pavement and maybe some gravel roads. Does anyone know if there are more choices in 17" off-road tires now?

If you are getting a spare set of wheels, why not buy an 18" for the rear ?

Pirelli Scorpion Sync or Avon Distanzia - they are not offroad knobbies, but they have fairly aggressive treads for 17" tires

What the world needs now is a 17" TCK80 for the front. Or at least a 17" front Tourance or Anakee. Lots of all-roads bikes with 17" front wheels out there (Uly, Tiger, Multistrada) that need some dirty love.

For some reason I thought they did. I didn't realize the KTM 625sxc with supermoto rims I saw with TKC's mounted had 18" rims mounted front and rear.

From what I've seen, the Yamaha WR250X is the same bike with different rims and tires as the WR250R, and they use the same size discs, (unlike the Suzuki SM bike) so if you are going to get spare rims the 18in rear and 21in front should fit no problem.

Or Pirelli makes the MT-60 in 17in dual sport tire, for front and rear. And Avon Gripsters come in 17in rear and 21in front,, I've been thinking about selling my MX bike and getting a Yamaha WR250X also, If it do I will probably put a Gripster on the rear and leave the stock front street tire for on the road, and buy a 21in front rim for the front 21in gripster for in the dirt.

I just got the same info while attending a tech update seminar in Olympia, WA today. The rep said that he believed that the wheels should be interchangeable from the X/R to the R/X model. The only thing he was unsure of was a possible clearance issue with the front fork protectors and the front brake line mounting point, but these are relatively minor issues. As soon as we get these bikes into the dealership I will be making comparisons and taking measurements. But...the X model and the R model DON'T use the same size front disc (298mm vs 250mm). I'm not sure if this will be an issue and didn't think to ask the rep about this. I guess running the larger disc on the 21" front wheel probably wouldn't cause me many problems as long as I am somewhat careful.

Run a 17" tire off road and you'll see why there aren't many to chose from. It's not a good size for those conditions. The 'tard set up isn't exactly good off road either. You buy a specialized bike to do a specialized task so let it do it's thing or purchase another model.

THe above mentioned tires will fly for mild dirt (aka dirt/gravel roads) but consider having a 19 inch front wheel made.  You can then run tkc 80's or some other semi knobs.  This place can do it if anyone can.
