Traveling around the west in September, I found a road that seemed like the USA's answer to touring the Alps.   If someone would assist me in figuring out how to post a jpg with a message, I'd be glad to share.   Smile

Bottom pic is Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, just north of Cody, WY.   It leads to the top pic, which is the west side of Bear Tooth Pass.  Ends up in Red Lodge, MT.  It's a pretty spectacular 90 miles or so.  You're too late for this year, though.   The Bear Tooth Pass road is closed for the winter already.

Yes, that's a nice road and thanks for sharing the pics... but it's also a good illustration how the roads in the east differ and can actually be better motorcycling roads in a certain respect.

The roads in the west were laid out during more recent times using modern civil engineering methods, so the grades tend to be gentler and the curves more open and the radii more consistent.

The east's roads are upgrades of walking paths and wagon trails and still have many features that keep them interesting: short, steep grades, tight sometimes changing radii, with more man-made features to view per mile.

Getting back out west to ride is still on my agenda. Different is nice.   Thumbsup

Certainly the character of the roads in the east and the west differ dramatically, as you've pointed out.   However, the west has some unique features which make the riding there incredibly good.   The climate is generally dry, the altitude is generally highER, and the scale of riding options is IMMENSE!  Now consider the lower population density, compared to the east, which makes the riding in the west pretty special.

By the way, where is "upstate New York"?   Is that Poughkeepsie, Olean, Potsdam, or something in between?   Why don't people just say non-NYC?

No offense intended!!   Smile

Upstate depends who you ask... but generally the areas more northern than NYC, which is about the same latitude as central PA. All parts of "upstate" have more in common with any other part than with NYC. I'm over in the western part of upstate.

As I said, riding the west (again) is on my agenda... eagerly awaited.
