It's rotated on the main page of S-T.net, but I wonder how many members agree. I ride in the rain as much as I have to, but I never really enjoy it.

I actually like to ride in the rain ,at least when the temps are decent. That is what separates boys from  man.It does not take much skill  to go fast in the dry but rain riding is where all experten training and talent comes into play.

Not to mention police radar does not work well, plus when was the last time you saw speed trap during a thunderstorm.?

Rain riding is fun,you can get the bike to fishtail very easily Razz, scares the living hell from the cagers behind you  Bigsmile, did I mention that bike gets washed "free"? Bigok

I don't jump up and down to ride in the rain, but with the proper gear its not that bad. I did days of it on this past trip where I was touring for a month. And the funny thing is the most amount of rain occurred in the desert southwest. That was just wrong...

On this forum, true.

On a sport-, or DS-, or cruiser-forum, not necessarily.

Maybe we should add that, if you don't have ABS, you shouldn't ride in the rain!  Lol

Only had to ride in the rain twice this year, but with a 45 mile commute, I have often had to put the rain suit on coming home.  Riding the Gap last fall, the last day was in the rain and I ended up giving my suit to a gal on a gixxer who had taken her leathers off that day for textile.  It was 50 degrees when we hit fog on the skyway and she had the shakes when we stopped.  When I hydroplaned this spring, hitting a wall of rain, it took a couple minutes before butt cheeks let go of the Corbin. (The Diablo's tracked perfectly though)

Bottom line for me is if it's going to rain all day, I'll take the Mini; if there is a chance of enjoying the back roads on the ride home, I'll ride; if there is sure to be lightning and/or heavy rain, Mini again; if it's raining and less than 50 degrees, those heated seats in the Cooper sure feel great.

Like chicken strips and HP/Torque figures whether someone rides in the rain or not has nothing to do with with whether they 'ride'.

I live in Seattle. I ride in the rain. I know at least one other Seattleite who does not ride in the rain unless caught in it. I don't think any less of him.

The only exception to this is Larry.

Motorcyclists who don't ride in the rain are posers; just like owners of Hummers that that don't go offroading.  Smile

I enjoy the rain and routinely ride in it. I do not enjoy severe weather, big difference IMHO. In my area mountains, riders routinely catch pop up storms on otherwise perfectly clear days. I guess for most people they should at least learn to be prepared (gear and safe operation) for inclement weather or only use their bikes for neighborhood/local rides. I could care less, but for a "Sport Touring"  site/context, I would lean towards riding in the rain is a prerequisite to this type of motorcycling (touring specifically).

I'm not sure why this type of poll becomes manly chicken strip Dino syn oil stock pipes cruisers vs UJM knock off no balls squid arguments. I don't think the question would make me think more or less of anyone. Ride what you like in a way that gives you many happy miles.

Yeah that.  I have to commute in the rain this winter since I'm car-less now, and I can't say I'm looking forward to that....but on trips, what can you do? Shrug

I like riding in big thunderstorms as long as I've got my rainsuit.  It's an amazing thing to behold, with lightning flashing all around.

I'm good with wind, rain or cold, but only one at a time.  It used to be two at a time but my tolerance has gone down.

I ride in the rain but it's more a matter of being "caught" in the rain. The only exception is occasionally I'll head out for a quick trip during a summer rain storm, the break from the heat is welcome then.

I figure if a rider can figure out how to ride and never get wet while riding the more power to them.

I don't get it.  If you don't ride in the rain you don't ride.  If you're commuting, you're not riding.  If you ride two up, you're not sport touring.  If you don't ride a sport bike you're not sport touring.  If you don't ride X number of miles per day, you're not sport touring.  Motorcyclist or rider?

Who's coming up with all these rules and definitions?  More importantly, why?  Headscratch

BTW- I don't like getting my bikes dirty by riding in the rain.  I guess that makes me a motorcycling version of Felix Unger.  Twofinger

I can envision a place where it doesn't rain.  Theoretically if a person rode there, this statement would be false.  Lol

I've ridden in a lot of rain.  It sucks, but if you're going to live here you ride in any weather that you can.  If you don't then you may as well not own a bike here.

Fortunatly the riding weather is usually better on the long trips.  Watch the sky, turn at right angles to the path of the clouds.  Worked great in our August and September trip.

Riding in the rain is part of....riding Headscratch There is no escaping it Sad I don't mind the rain, but the last 5 or so years has been a little much. I have watched Vivid disappear in a "wall of white" and I mean vanish from sight, thats how sudden and intense the rain fell. I have watched a car do a complete 360 between Jammin and I EEK! this was after riding 15 hours in a steady downpour, then it decided to really rain Rolleyes Watched Kaos968 get hit by rain driven by a 60 mph crosswinds, saw him and his bike pushed into on coming traffic...Jammin, Kaos and I huddle in the woman's restroom escaping the rain Lol Had to take the F__king interstate home because every other road out of Winona was closed due to severe flooding. I'm replacing the dash on the ST3, because it fried out from all the riding in the rain I have done.....can it stop raining on me Bigsmile

The first day on the range in my MSF basic rider course was a full downpour all day. Now, rain in New Hampshire is not unheard of, but it's unusual to rain all day. They recommended rain gear if we had it. I didn't have any so I wore my Columbia ski jacket shell over my leather jacket and wore jeans. Big mistake. The Columbia jacket ended up not being waterproof and my jacket took weeks to dry out. Had to go to the Concord Goodwill to buy $5 jeans just to get some dry clothes. Ended up being near hypothermic and took an hour in the classroom shivering just to warm up. Was a good shock treatment way to learn clutch control in the rain  Lol

Yeah, I've gotten adaquate rain gear since.

I ride in the rain when I have to...it's not something I go out of my way to do.

Riding in the rain on the FJR is always an interesting experience, especially with all the road shit mingling with the water.  The FJR (or any other high torque bike) does not suffer ham fisted riders in the rain. Crazy  I remember one instance of merging onto I-5.  A little too much gas as I was merging down the mostly straight ramp and I was all crossed up at 50 mph or so.  That woke me up.  This morning I was above idle going through an intersection and the rear was sliding.  I do have a pair of new Avon Storms waiting in the garage...that may help. Lol

So yeah, I never found this to be the case on the VFR...but high torque bikes on rain slick roads makes for interesting commutes.

Tread lightly.

Riding in the rain depends on circumstance and conditions.  When communting, as long as the % is 40% or less I ride.  Assuming, its not rainging when I leave.  I hate getting wet on the way into work.  It sucks being in wet clothes all day.

On a tour it a different story.  A schedule usually needs keeping so rain or shine Im on the road.

I was a little surprised by the comment about liking to ride with the lightning flashing all around.  This is the one thing that schedule or not will get me to pull off the road and seek shelter.  That stuff makes be nervous.

I'll ride if necessary but won't make a point of riding in the rain. Yesterday I could have taken the bike to the gaming event and had it not been raining I'd have gone but with all the extra gear I cart _and_ the 41 degrees (change the Gerbing's plug) _and_ the rain _and_ the super slick Arapaho road (they use tar snake material to coat the road EEK! ), I went with taking Rita's car. Heck, she harassed me about not taking the bike Smile

Does it make you a REAL rider?  Nah, no more than driving in snow makes you a REAL driver- you can still suck at it.  While I pride myself on riding year-round in all sorts of conditions, I would maintain that the guy who actively works at improving his riding skills, consistently over time, is a REAL rider- because he is getting better at it! Rain and cold.

Pick one, I am out there.

Both, I'll be much more hesitant and it's very hard for me to really enjoy.

Riding in the rain sucks.  Maybe that makes me a big vagina, but so be it.

I don't mind a drizzle, or even a brief shower, but riding in a sustained downpour?  No thanks.  Nothing sucks worse than the moment when the last dry spot on your body -YOUR CROTCH - gets flooded with cold water.  I'll just find some shelter and wait it out, thank you very much.

Unless I'm on a trip....I'll pass....this past Sept,  2 other STN members & myself went down to Lewisburg WV & spent the last 3-4 hours going there in the pouring rain behind a fuel tanker on 2 lane in the mountains....temps went from the low 70's to the mid 40's, fog, mist & cold, not fun....(must be getting old Rolleyes)....

I'll ride in the rain if I have to, as long as I'm wearing enough gear, which I usually am. But do I like it? Not really. And I'm not about to call somebody a non-rider because they won't ride in the rain. If there were any intelligence lodged in my head, I wouldn't ride in the rain either.

If I'm already out on a ride and get caught in the rain, I'll keep going.  I usually won't start a ride if its raining.  I cancelled a long ride (overnighter) this year because it was raining the morning I was going to leave and was going to rain the next day.  I did a weekend trip last year and it rained on the way home, about 300 miles.  While the rain was heavy at times, the fact that the temperature wasn't to bad and I had rain gear made the ride ok.  My Concours offers pretty good protection, not like the V-twins I passed.

Here in the Bluegrass, we are predicted to get 1-2 inches per day all week.  So far, the weatherman was right for a change.  And no, I'm not riding 45mi each way in the dark, in the rain, at the average speed of 80mph on my section of I-75.  Mini motoring this week.

I have a rule regarding riding in the rain. If it's raining when it's time to leave I don't ride. I don't consider a light sprinkle raining, just thick fog. I don't go running for the nearing cover when it's starts raining on a ride. I just roll on...

I did take the little SV650 out for a ride in the rain one night just for fun. It was a downpour and I was drenched. Fairly pleasant though, I actually enjoyed it since it was so hot that day.

No hard and fast rules, but I usually won't commute in serious rain, and I don't usually head out on a weekend morning ride if it's raining hard.  But I don't avoid rain for most planned events. For some reason, just about every time I'm on a multi-day trip, it rains...a lot. I've spent 7-days straight riding thru rain more than once.  So while I don't ride in the rain frequently, when I do I get my fill.

This, ostensibly, is a sport-touring forum.

If you're going to tour on a motorcycle, you don't have the weather choices that day-riders or commuters have.  Unless you have and are prepared to exercise the option to abort or drastically change your plans in order to avoid getting wet, sooner or later you're going to be riding in the rain.

Unless you're sport-touring in the Southeast.  Rolleyes   ... which gives rise to an idea:  maybe we should schedule all further ST.N events in the GA-SC-NC-TN-KY-AL area.  If that doesn't prove to be an effective rain dance, at least we will have found a place for our "weather-fragile" members to ride without worry....  Lol

And if it solves the drought problem, we can take all the credit!  Bigok

I did not own a car between the ages of 16 and 22 so I rode everyday except during snow since I lived in the northeast. Riding in the rain at first was a test of nerves and then became a zen like experience.

Zen like experience yes it was. I used to go for long rides in the rain and my fair weather buddies were like where are you going. I would go for hours, put on the rain suite and just take off. There was a zone I could achieve while riding in the rain that I rarely achieved while riding in the dry. I would just get into the groove where I was riding just so smooth, I felt fluid and loose.

Well that was twenty or so years ago and I have become a fair weather biker. But when I do get caught in the rain it brings a smile to my face not a feeling of doom, and when with people who did not like the rain it annoys me how much they slow down.

On this forum, true.

On a sport-, or DS-, or cruiser-forum, not necessarily.

Maybe we should add that, if you don't have ABS, you shouldn't ride in the rain!  Lol

Personally, I do not like ABS on my bike or car (I want to be able to lock my wheels up when/if I want to). Ditto linked brakes.
Road tested an FJR, for about 20 miles-- activated the ABS 3 times (not on purpose). Scared the KA-KA out of me.
I like to be able to lock up the rear brake to swing the back around. Like when you were a kid on your bicycle. I'm getting a new (to me) bike here in about 3 days-- with ABS and linked brakes. My biggest fear? I'll forget and pull a back wheel slide (or try it) and land on my face!

Rain? Stay out of the center of the lane. Take it really easy til the rain has washed the oil/anti freeze and other snot like stuff off and you will be amazed at how much traction  you get. I've raced (road raced) in the rain. So, no big deal. Smoothness is the key. It wouldn't stop me from leaving on a trip or much anticipated ride--but,  going to the store? I'll take the car. Torrential downpour? I pull over.

It's another aspect of the sport (rain) and up in northern climes we occasionally have to deal with snow or ice. With good gear on, threatening clouds don't play a big factor in the "decision" it gives you some confidence to ride anyway. I do prefer dry though as an emergency stop is pretty sketchy on wet roads.

Ice is tricky. I went for a late fall ride in Northern MN a couple of years ago, stayed for supper in Grand Portage. When I was finished my dinner and started up the bike I noticed the temperature had dropped significantly. As I rode up through the village to MN 61 highway from the Lake Superior casino, mid corner, I passed over spring water trickling across the road. Whoooah! that wet section had froze and my bike was on its way down! Luckily it was only about a 10 ft patch and I was able to save it once I hit the dry stuff on the other side. I was however riding a little higher in the saddle on the way home.

I now ride with a digital outdoor thermometer on the rh mirror to alert me to potential icy conditions.

First of all, if you are going to ride Scotland, you will ride in the wet - a lot.

Rode to college in appalling conditions, lashing rain, sideways half-gale. Totally drenched on the outside.

One lassie said to me that the ride must be awful and I couldn't possibly enjoy it.

My reply, "Well, riding is a lot like sex. Some rides are better than others, but its never bad."

I ride in the rain every time it rains and the temp stays above 32,,, kinda enjoy it too. Rain gear, full face, electric windshield, and full fairing keeps me really comfy and the ST handles really well in the rain too.... sometimes alter my route if I feel it's raining hard enough to really reduce the vis on the highway though. I like riding in big thunderstorms as long as I've got my rainsuit.  It's an amazing thing to behold, with lightning flashing all around.
I agree.  Except when the lightning blinds you for almost a second, that's some scary riding!

I don't mind if it rains, my Hi Viz 'stitch keeps me warm and dry and the Dyna and Bandit both track well so it's no big deal. If it's pouring down when I leave for work I'll drive, the commute from Tacoma to Seattle at o'dark thirty stinks bad enough without adding standing water to the mix. The rest of the time rain is just part of the deal here, I always wear my Darien so it's no big deal.

I rode home from my G/F's on the Dyna after watching the Super Bowl and it went from rain, to rain and snow mixed to snow before I got home to Bonney Lake, wasn't any problem.

I don't start from home in the rain any more. I have done a lot of riding in the rain to get home.   I don't let the possibility of rain keep me from using my bike.

I ride in the rain a lot!  I love it, ask me how I feel if I ever slide out in a corner due to rain.

Threats of lightning and sleet/ice keep me off the motorcycle.

I think it comes down to personal risk management... if all I'm doing is riding to work, and it's going to rain all day, why as a responsible father would I take that risk? If I'm already out riding, or there is 'a plan', I ride even in light snow if there isn't a significant risk of ice. But when the bike can be just as easily substituted with the truck for getting somewhere routine.... real men have as many brains as they do balls.   Bigok

If I didn't ride in the rain my bike might never get washed!  Besides, riding in the rain counts as a bath for BMW riders on tour.

I ride in the rain.  I even ran my WERA race school during a monsoon.  Talk about the "oh well, guess I have to do this now" feeling.  Had pilot powers on the bike.  The bike was a bit more upright, throttle control was critical, but I have to admit it was fun.   Thumbsup

You're about right.  It's hard to wash a bike that's moving...

My beginner riding course first range day was during a day-long deluge. So imagine about 20 unexperienced riders learning about clutch control and emergency stops on wet pavement. Fortunately, only one person dumped a bike.

Rain doesn't bother me but I don't seek it out. A couple of years ago I was riding Gunnison/Hotchkiss/Delta/Durango. Rained damn near the whole time.

Several years ago I got caught between Burns and Bend Oregon in a hail storm. THAT SUCKED! There's no place to hide out there.  Crazy

Motorcyclists who don't ride in the rain are posers; just like owners of Hummers that that don't go offroading.  Smile

Heck, I even ride thru automatic carwashes ....

Just joking guys.

Don't really enjoy riding in the rain, but I also don't go running for shelter if it does. I do however hate having to clean the bike after being out in the rain.
