A guy down the street just got one of these (just in time for winter!).

Seems like a nice bike, I just took it around the block a couple of times. I was wondering if anyone uses them for touring, ...knowing H-D, there must be plenty of chrome options for it, but what about bags, bigger windshield, etc?

Use to have one.  There are many who set them up for touring.  The H-D Parts and Accessories Catalog has all kinds of options for windshields, bags, seats, etc.  Annually there is a V-Rod rally to Kansas City and many come from all over the country to attend.

Two considerations...

1). If the V-Rod is 2006 and earlier, excepting the Street Rod, the gas tank is small and the range is only 100-120 miles.  This didn't stop anyone from going far, but planning ahead necessary.  Beginning in '07, five gallon tank gets one to 200+ mile range.

2). Despite windshield options it is still a breezy bike with the shield parallel to the raked out forks.

If one want to SPORT tour on a V-Rod I would think that the Street Rod would be the best option.  40% cornering clearance, 5 gal. gas tank and better looking... Lol

I've seen folks touring on a V-max, 2 -up, so touring on a V-rod doesn't seem too far fetched, though the fuel range would be the major concern. I've seen a v-rod decked out with a Road Glide fairing and side cases, and it looked pretty cool. (Mackie(sp?) HD in Whitby/Oshawa) If one could add an auxiliary tank in the top box, it may work well for 5-800 mile days.

I'd love to see a proper V-Rod engined sport touring bikewith a correct chassis, correct bags and riding position with a well thought out frame mounted fairing where styling was not the only concern, big enough but not huge.  Doubt it will ever happen but it could be kind cool.

I noticed [in the texas cycle trader] a Austin HD dealer has discounted 06 street rods down to $10,995.   not sure of the details- maybe its the demo bike at that price.  and he still wants freight, prep, TT&L so maybe out the door at $12,500.

That is pretty reasonable compared to the $15k msrp.

i agree as do many other folks... i can't help but think that the VR power plant config is destined for great things in years to come... maybe a petition to MOCO might help to steer them in the ST direction (???)... one thing about H-D they do listen to their customer base.
