Well, the Grand Jury thinks he lied, and we all knew he did.
Quote
Associated Press Writer
SAN FRANCISCO Nov 15, 2007 (AP)
The home run king wasn't home free after all.

Barry Bonds was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice Thursday and could go to prison instead of the Hall of Fame for telling a federal grand jury he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

The indictment came just three months after the San Francisco Giants star broke Hank Aaron's career home run record, and it culminated a four-year investigation into steroid use by elite athletes.

But for all the speculation and accusations that clouded his pursuit of Aaron, Bonds was never identified by Major League Baseball as testing positive for steroids, and personal trainer Greg Anderson spent most of the last year in jail for refusing to testify against his longtime friend.

Then came the indictment four counts of perjury, one of obstruction of justice; a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and Bonds' lawyers seemed caught off guard.

The 10-page report mainly consists of excerpts from Bonds' December 2003 testimony before a grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO. It cites 19 occasions in which Bonds allegedly lied under oath.

"I'm surprised," said one of his lawyers, John Burris, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."

Burris said he didn't know of the indictment before being alerted by The Associated Press. He said he would call Bonds to notify him.

Anderson was released from prison after the indictment was handed up and refused comment as he walked out.

His attorney, Mark Geragos, said the trainer didn't cooperate with the grand jury.

Interesting that they held off until after the season ended.  Sorry, but look at the before and after shots:

There have always been problems in the world.  I'd like to believe that at one time sports were a mere diversion but I guess that is no longer the case.

The big question is whether Greg Anderson finally decided to roll over and testify to refute Bonds' claim that he didn't knowingly use steroids or other banned performance enhancing substances.

If Anderson continues to remain silent, what new evidence did the Feds find that proves that Barry lied on the stand, with immunity granted, in front of the Grand Jury?

Chris Webber lied, paid a fine and did no time. Marion Jones lied, but will do time for some check writing scheme. Ray Lewis lied in a murder case, yet did no time.

Jason Giambi apparently told the truth in front of a Grand Jury and now he's set to make millions because he's allowed to continue with his career.

Mark Maguire hemmed and hawed in front of Congress, but he wasn't under oath. Sammy Sosa forgot how to speak english in front of the same congressional committee, yet he's still playing. One Rapheal Palmiero wagged his finger at the esteemed members of the legislature and six months later got hoisted upon his own petard, but he was a senior citizen in baseball terms so he's still got his millions.

But ya know what? I don't care anymore. Though the Dodgers still suck.

Those congressional hearings were a farce on both sides and an embarrasment to everyone involved.
Webber was under age.  Marion Jones came clean.  Ray Lewis was with the wrong people in the wrong spot.

This is something much different.  The Home Run King is facing jail time.  A sad day no matter how you look at it.

What's so different?

Yes, those congressional hearings were a shameful, political grandstanding farce.

But....

Wasn't Webber at least 18 years old? Maybe he didn't know he was doing something wrong, but when has that ever been a valid excuse? Especially with the Feds?

Jones will do time for check fraud, not the lying bit, though that does work against her.

Lewis may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, but he wasn't completely honest until indicted. He took a plea agreement, as did all the others mentioned.

Even Micheal Vick took a plea agreement. He deserves time behind bars. He's lucky they didn't throw the RICO act at him, though they could have easily done so. It was probably used as a threat to get him to take the plea.

As I posted before, unless Greg Anderson rolls, what does the government have on Bonds? I'm not talking about whether he took 'roids or not, but whether he willfully lied before a Grand Jury. That's the crux in this case.

Do I think Barry lied? Ya, I think so. But can the prosecutors prove it? At this point, unless some serious Anderson testimony comes out, the Feds have the same evidence they had 3 years ago. Why didn't they indict then?

The Feds are saying they have proof, through drug tests, that Bonds has tested positive for 'roids. Big deal. That's not the issue here. The issue is whether Bonds told the truth about knowingly taking performance enhancing drugs.

The Feds have to prove the perjury and, in conjunction, the obstruction of justice.

Stay tuned.  December 7th.  What a shame that remembrance will be upstaged by this.  My guess is they have very little but who knows.  I don't think we'll ever see Barry in cuffs as I'm sure he'll mount the best defense money can buy.  Cochran is dead right?

I'd rather not. I know I won't be able to avoid it, but I'm not going to look for it.

doesn't say anything actually....

Anyone that knows anything about working out knows that a person can transform their body like that naturally. That before picture was taken years ago. I'd like to see a before and after picture of Barry Bonds in 1998 and 1999 or 2000 because this is the period of time that Bonds supposedly started to use steroids. Is there much difference in his body?

Bonds is going to be found not guilty after all is said and done. Local news interviewed Victor Conte (the supposed source of the steroids that Bonds used), and he said that he highly doubts that the Feds have good evidence against Bonds. You know that Bonds is gonna have a dream team of lawyers. He will come out ahead when all is said and done.

And you know what. I hope he does. The government has handled this horribly in my opinion, and they deserve to be embarrassed.

Bingo.

Also, I'm so glad they indicted him. Now America is safe. Talk about one of the most overblown stories of this decade.
