Hmm, lets see, that's 1500 Desmosedici RRs at approx 70K a pop, that's what, approx $10, 500,00.00?  EEK!

Who else but Ducati could sell 1500 MotoGP replica bikes at 70K a piece?
Honda? Yamaha? Kawasaki? Suzuki? BMW, MVAugusta, Moto Guzzi (if they had one to offer)? Ducati has made monumental history IMO.   Thumbsup

"
FROM DUCATI DMH:

MASSIVE SUCCESS FOR DUCATI DESMOSEDICI RR:
1500 PRODUCTION RUN ALL SOLD  OUT

Every single one of the 1500 Ducati Desmosedici RR bikes, the first
true MotoGP replica which the Borgo Panigale manufacturer decided to produce
in a  limited number, has been sold.

Since the  official presentation in June 2006, hundreds of requests
have poured in, proving  the success of this bike from the beginning. Today,
the Ducati Desmosedici RR,  whose production began a few weeks ago, is ready to be
delivered to the first  clients who will receive their motorcycles in
January 2008.

The  Desmosedici RR is the first true MotoGP replica and serves as the
best representation of Ducati Corse’s accumulated experience and
technology that is now being transferred to a street bike - in practice, the new flag
ship in terms  of performance, components and style for the whole  sector.
This is a bike  that has already become a cult symbol and is destined
to maintain, and most  likely, increase, its value over time.

Following the conquest of Ducati's recent MotoGP title by Casey
Stoner,  the race was on to purchase the last remaining bikes available. Today the
sale  of the RR has come to a end, and now this Italian jewel of technology, one
of the most envied and sought-after objects of desire for motorcycle fans
all over  the world, is all sold-out."

I read they were hoping to sell 200 to cover costs... but then the demand grew so rapidly that they had to raise the ceiling to 1500.  That's 7.5 times their predicted demand!

Amazing.   Clap

Doesn't that sales figure make them eligible for WSBK or AMA or something? What is the minimum production required to be homolugated or whatever the term is?

I think it does, but I have to think Ducati worked so hard to get the WSBK rules changed to allow 1200's (perhaps using the Desmodecci as a persuasive tool in bargaining) that they'll continue to use that for production racing, since they'll still make the most money selling the 1098s.  It'd be a heck of a privateer bike though   EEK!

Not to mention the machine would be used for it's intended purpose instead of being decoration in a living room.

I meant to add, "in my dreams"...

My brother actually does have a deposit on one, but I think that he is just going to try to flip it.  He has no real interest in riding bikes anymore.  I wonder how many other speculators like him are out there...
Thing is, 1500 bikes is actually a really large number considering the size of the market for something like this.  Ducati really should be commended.  What I don't understand is why the Japanese mfgs don't make high spec versions of their standards sport bikes.  Yam did it one time with the R1 - put Ohlins on it from the factory and all those puppies sold out in a sec even though it was about $6K more than the stock version IIRC.

A local guy that I hope to ride to Alaska with in 2009 has two (or three) on order. Nice guy from a well off family. He's got a garage full of hi-spec Ducs.

He got to ride Pegram's 2007 Formula Extreme bike at BeaveRun a month ago and bought it right there on the spot. Pegram set a new track record on it that day with used race tires (http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=30623).

Was that the R1 LE with the bumble bee KR paint?

I guess one needs to ask, "Can a Japanese marque sell 1500 GP replica units at 70K a pop in a matter of 6 months?" They certainly have the owner base.

Thumbsup Ducati certainly had that bargining tool. Now the 1200cc rule is in place Ducati have no desire to homologate the D16 for WSBK, and as it requires the manfacturer to homologate that puts paid to privateer D16's as well.

Ducati found value in MotoGp to the tune of 108 million when they sold 1500 DR16 V4s at 72K a
pop... they sold because they are the real deal... buyers will soon realize that the same old V2s
and I4s are not the real deal anymore... it's a new game for the manufactures...

Ducati must produce more V4s and sign the papers for homologation... it should be up to the
buyers whether to race the same old I4 / V2 relics or the new V4...
