This just out. Part of me is surprised by this but part of me was expecting it.

Like his designs or hate them, they always drew attention and were always out of the ordinary. I mean no other bike looks like the Mutli, SS, Hypermotard, or the XX9 series bikes. I know many hated his designs but I found them a fresh take.

I like the MTS, but the rest? Ick. Personally, I think his departure was long overdue. I will say, and correct if I'm wrong about his involvement, that there new retro line is quite nice, for the most part.

I liked the Hypermotard, I think he went out on a high note. Sure it's basically a Multistrada, but it looks great.

I liked the 999/749 series too, not sure why people disliked them as much as they did.   Now when I see a 916 series bike it looks really dated. That being said, I like the 1098 looks better and it costs less than the 999 although it is much more conventional sportbike looking. As much as some sportbikers rag on Harley riders for "form over function" I think the sport market in general is very me too and conservatively styled.

The P.T. 900/750 supersport restyle was   to me.

Bikes like the Multi, and ST series are practical so it's hard to make them exciting to look at.

Exactly, sportbikes have to look a certain way for people to really like them. It really is too bad that there seems to be no room for a pioneer. The XX9's were truly ahead of their time and look better today than when they first came out. But, they looked differently than the 916 series and definitely looked different from the Japanese bikes.

Now, I think the MTS is exciting to look at. Yeah, the front was not integrated into the design as well as it might have been but the side view is amazing. I love the trellis frame, single sided swingarm, and high exhaust. The gas tank may not have been the most functional but it is attractive.

I didn't mind the xx9 superbikes, but the MTS is just fugly. I'd be riding one right now if they hadn't put such a horrible bulbous nose on the thing. And this coming from a VStrom owner. The MTS looks less F'd up in black (slimming) with bags on the back though. I'll ride cheap and ugly, but not expensive and ugly. Oh well, Ducati had their shot. If the moons line up this week, it'll be an Orange Xmas for me (KTM 950 Supermoto "R").

Gotta say I like the HM and 1098/848 styling though, even if the 1098/848 are more conventional. The sport classic series are mostly winners too if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't think the either Turkish or Tommy complained when that 86 carat diamond showed up in that Pikey dog, errr deg, they found at the campsite after the death of Bricktop and cohorts.

Ducati management is the culprit. they approved the designed, kept them inspite of falling sales and quality control problems in the gas tank design. that centerup exhaust design is excellent. the rest of the design, not so much.

Perfect observation. However by way of full disclosure, I should mention that I'm shopping for a 999. Between the unpopular design, the 1098 and the economy, these things have moved well towards being a casual buy.

the ss bikes 800ss and 1000ss of recent years are the best looking bikes I've ever seen, the 999 not so much but it was different and recognizable easily.  the HM is a stupid bike that I dont like, and the multi is good looking once you rip its front off, its the butterface of the motorcycle world.
