07 Yamaha FJR 1300 currently on order with D&H Cycle in Cullman, Ala.. Presently own a Honda 2004 VTX 1800C & a 2004 Honda Aero 750 Shadow. I have put over 25,000 miles on the two bikes during the last two years. Most of it (21,000) on the VTX. Any words of wisdom from those who made the cruiser to sport tour choice?

Get ready for the traffic tickets. Keep an eye on the speedo.

Get ready for BS from the ST and GT boys & gals Bigsmile

Your VTX has some grunt so I doubt the power will be eye opening. Get used to double rpms though.

I made a transition from V-star to ST - it was an eye opener!
Friend took the ST for 30 minutes ride - next week his VTX1800 was listed for sale Smile

V Star vs 1.8K VTX is ~ cx silverwing vs goldwing, elite 250 vs. burg.600, Spears vs Hayak  Inlove(sp? Headscratch).,...well in the power dept. anyway.

well, I had V-star 1100 with jetted carbs, K&N dual airfilters instead of stock airbox and aftermarket pipes.  I never dinoed mine, but same setup was dinoed at 65 hp and something around 70 ft-lb torque, with 200 lbs less weight than  VTX, so the gap was not that big - I never had to work too hard to keep up.

but the speed was not really important.  I rode VTX1800 - it handles like a brick - you really have to muscle it to the turn and muscle it to keep the lean and line.  Any ST bike will be an eye opener on a first curve

Yea, go easy for awhile. I test rode a Rocket III a few times and its a pig compared to a ST bike.

Roadlizard, you are going to love your FJR.  I sold by beloved V65 Sabre and had a new 06' FJR delivered 2 days ago.  When I say new, it has .4 on the trip ods and 0 on the main odo.  (It was a long hunt to find a blue one Razz).

Since we are having ice & real cold rain, I was able to sneak only 90mi. in, but this is going to be a fun bike.

Enjoy your new machine when you get it.

Regards,

On a long day in the saddle you will be surprised how comfortible a ST bike is compared to a cruiser.  Your low speed and handling will be a little bit more top heavy, but your "flickability" will put a big, stupid grin on your face.

I ride a HD at work for 10 hours a day then ride home on an ST1300.  The 13, a heavy bike, feels like it weighs 5 pounds on the ride home.

Have fun, don't worry about brands, and RIDE RIDE RIDE!

Don't be afraid to use the friction zone.

To make best use of the engine's horsepower, you'll have to use higher revs than with the cruisers.

Enjoy!

Get ready to do some real riding over several 100 mile and states. Something those cruisers usually so not do. Cruisers are usually posing around town then back to the garage.

I had HD low rider for years that i rode the crap out of but it damn near killed me.

Should be fun from a cruiser to a sport. I just went from a sportbike to a full touring Wing. Talk about change.  Bigsmile

I just went from a VTX1300 to an FJR1300...Night and day difference!!! Corners are much more fun, and "flickability" is incredibly different.  Although the bikes almost weigh the same relatively, the FJR feels much lighter.  The power difference is amazing...At 50+mph on the interstate if you want to pass someone, you almost don't even have to downshift, just give it some gas and go around.

One big thing - watch the speedo!!! I was cruisin along on the interstate yesterday, all alone, no one in front or behind me for quite a ways, next thing you know, I look down I'm doin' 90!!!   EEK!  Didnt even feel like it, and would have bet my paycheck I wasnt going over 75.

Like you I made the switch from crusier to Sport Tourer quite a number of years ago.
The only thing I can say is if you are anything like me, then you just as well go ahead and place a couple of classified ads for the cruisers. I'll never go back.
