I was at a local dealership today and I came across a 2003 V-Strom for sale.  It's the 1000 model, factory side and top cases, with 21000 miles.  It looks in good condition.  Have not ridden it yet.  The dealer is asking $5900.  What do you guys think?

In line with KBB projection, but you can do better.  Keep shopping/dickering.  Cases (and farkles) don't add much value, in this case, only 200 bucks.

The above sites frequently have VStroms for sale in the classified ads forums.  While luggage may not add appreciably to the KBB or NADA value, if you want the luggage, having it in place already will save you 800-1000 bucks.  The 03 Vstroms had clutch issue.  Try to find out if the one you are considering has had the clutch basket replaced.

As the owner of an '03, I would like to amend what Paul said above. The clutch basket is suspected as the culprit for a noise or growl (known affectionately as 'chudder') as the bike passes through the 2800-3200 rpm range. It is not a safety or transmission wear issue. Some people have had the basket replaced to find the same noise returning. I've got 30,000+ on my replacement basket, it makes the same noise, I'm not worried.   Shrug  Any number of '02 and '03 DL1000s have  100k on 'problem' clutch baskets.

Price seems a bit high to me.

I have an 04 with Givi bags.  Very capable and compentent tourer.  Buffeting issues may be your biggest concern.  This seems to be very individual.  I have no issues with mine except in conditions that would cause buffeting on all bikes except maybe a Wing.  If I remember correctly, the 03 did NOT have an adjustable windscreen (correct me if I am wrong BJ).  You may want to factor in a bit for that.  Price seems a tad high, but that would depend on condition.  For comparison, I paid about 7300 USD for an 04 with 2200 miles.
