Howdy fellow bikers Just found your group on the net while researching sport touring motorcycles, bravo to the members I am impressed with the genuine conveyance of information without the flaming and typical member bashing found within other forums.

I just returned home after attending the international motorcycle show in Novi Michigan. My main objective was to evaluate the ST1300, FJR, and the new Kawasaki 14. The show provided an opportunity to see and feel the bikes nearly side by side. After my wife and I perched two up on all three bikes the ST1300 became our first choice do to our preference of the rider and passenger ergonomics with the FJR, then the Kawasaki to follow.

Before I ask my ST1300 related questions I will fill you in on my background, you can skip this paragraph if you like.  I have been riding as long as I can remember with my first mike being a Briggs & Stratton mini, then a Honda 50, Suzuki 50 the one that looked like a 125, Suzuki GS550, Yamaha  XS850, 650 Maxim, Honda V65 Magna, and currently a V-Star 1100. my favorite of the bikes so far is the V65.

My wife wants her own bike for group rides so she is going to get the V-star and I am looking for a new ride. The idea is to use the sport Turing bike to commute two-up the 150 miles from our home to our Hang gliding / Paragliding campsite in northern Michigan where we will keep the V-star. So with this in mind I will use the new bike for solo riding and group excursions and as a cross country two-up commuter.

Now for the ST1300 questions.

How overloaded can you ride an ST1300 on a regular bases. I am 260, wife is 190, then add the full side bags heavy leather jackets etc. I’m guessing 530 lbs of load on the bike for the commute. The bike with fuel is approx 720, so that’s 1250 lbs. man are we fat or what. So is anyone in the group running this heavy and what are the consequences?

Also what is the GVW in the manual?

How prevalent is the high speed wobble, is this a common issue or a rare anomaly. And at what speed is this likely to show up?

How about loading / overloading affecting the wobble?

My V-star with a tall windshield still buffets my head anyone with this problem on an ST?

What is the top list of options you have added to your bike?

As an owner of a ST1300 if you were buying a used ST1300 what things would you look for and what questions would you ask the seller?

Any particular year have updates that make it more favorable as a used purchase over previous model years?

Anywhere near max GVW and the handling is going to get crappy. You'll be at the max preload on the rear shock and the front travel will be greatly reduced. Aftermarket front springs, I run Sonic's, and a new rear shock will help some.

401 lbs for a US spec bike and 410 for a Canadian........ The bikes are identical and I have no idea why the difference.

I've had it happen on two different bikes. The only common elements were a top box and speed. Both times the wobble started at about 110 mph. In one instance changing the screen position on the fly cured it immediately, in the other nothing helped. OK slowing down did but that shouldn't count.  Lol

Possible. The majority of riders never experience it. Many will proclaim that it's not an issue as they've never had it happen. It happens, not often and not at sane speeds, but it happens. Anyone who says different has their head in the sand.

The stock screen is a compromise between performance (wind drag) looks and protection. There are many aftermarket shields out there. I find wind noise a bigger problem than buffeting so I always wear ear protection.

PIAA 910's on Dick Seng mounts, Starcom Advance, Sargent Saddle, Garmin 276C, Valentine V1, Givi 52 ltr. top box, Clearview GT small screen in the spring/fall, upgraded horn, BMW style and standard cig power receptacles. The PIAA's, Garmin and V1 are the most important.  Smile

If it's an '03 or '04 there were a few recalls that should have been done. One for a wire loom routing issue, the other was an inspection of the linked brake proportioning valve.

The '03 Std. model did not have an adjustable windscreen, after that they all did. There were a few heat shields added to the post '03 models and there appears to be a yet to be determined (cosmetic or functional) addition of some small body panels on the '08. Other than that the bikes are identical.

Hi Keith,
I have an '04 ST and love it but have punished it a little like you are planning to. I am a little heavier than you and my gf is a little lighter (okay, well that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it!) but combined we are something beyond the stated limits of the bike, 400#, probably by 35 pounds or more before stuffing the bags. Add in bags, personal gear (jackets, helmets, boots ... who weighs themselves with boots on?) and we're probably 100# or so over gross.

We pack light but the topbox (Hondaline) carries a fair amount of weight with books, maps, cameras, water, snacks and what-nots. We did about 4,000 miles this past spring up to Montana and back from LA and it served us very well and we were quite comfortable on it. (I actually get better mileage two-up then alone but there's other variables in there of course!) It's not as spirited tandem as riding one-up but I did not notice any wobble. I just cranked the preadjust 2/3rds or 3/4ths the way up and off we went! (Of course I never even began to approach 110mph ... 2-up? ... why???)

That was on OEM tires. Now I'm running Metzlers and I've developed some funny wear patterns. The shoulders are actually more worn then then centers and I suspect it's due to the load. I'd love to tell you it's from cranking in the corners but I think it's a little more than that. I ran at spec PSI but think I need to bump it up a couple pounds to compensate for the weight and return the friction patch to spec. Easy enough, I just need to do the math.

I find the windshield to be quite servicable and I am 6'3". I do get some buffeting at the top of my head but consider it to be negligible. I put 50,000 miles on this bike with it including a long tour from LA to Alaska and back and the stock screen gives good protection. More protection of course means more drag but it also spoils your mileage somewhat. I rode with another guy, same bike-larger screen, and he was going dry in Shoshone while I still had plenty of gas to get to Pahrump. I suspect his larger screen cost him 10% or more on mileage. Something to consider. I kinda like having the 300+ mile range this setup affords.

Absolutely the first thing to change is the seat. I have two from Corbin (Two seater and a single with their smuggler) and couldn't be happier. Just the other day I knocked off 234 miles in a single sitting without thinking about it on my way back from Monterey to LA. Piece of cake. And they don't look like they were swiped off a barcalounger somewhere. There's a Fenda-Extenda to keep road debris out of the radiator, plugs for electric vests since you're somewhere you need that stuff, (I grew up outside of Kazoo) topbox of course and the lights as noted. The Metzlers are well worth it when you've got to replace them, you will be amazed. Next though I'm getting a GPS, I've missed turns on IB runs and I'm really sick of posting the extra miles! Best giz? Scala-Rider Team Headset. Sweet!

Went to the Honda shop today to look at a new Shoei Helmet and bought a new 0 mileage 2007 ST1300.  Crazy
If you look long enough you will eventually buy. The deal appeared fair to me after looking at used prices, I didn’t want a black bike so it was a choice between a 2005, 2007, 2008.

Thanks for the input and answers to my questions. Hope it warms up early this spring or ill be towing it down south to avoid the salt for a first ride.
