Is anyone here familiar with them, has anyone done a ride and been counted by them? I ask because me and a couple of my friends from here are contemplating a ride that they have available.

your official time starts with a gas station receipt that is time and date stamped. Add odometer reading to this receipt for documentation.

mileage it took to complete your ride
document mileage on all gas receipts. send photocopies (not originals) of all gas receipts.
hours and minutes it took to complete your ride
your name, address and phone number
forms for your Long Distance Ride beginning and ending points
any receipts that you acquired along your route
your check for payment of certification.

But the difference is that with the LDRA, you get to be (cue the music) "Bad To The Bone"!

Well, there IS another LD certification group out there, but if you contact 'em, for God's sakes whatever you do don't say "Bad To The Bone".

Yes, the IBA has had very long processing times from what I read online, but apparently they are dramatically improving things now.  As I mentioned in another thread on this board,  I did my first IBA ride on 9/8/07, and got my cert. package on 12/27/07.  The <4 month wait didn't kill me.

The big question is, what is the certification worth to you? With the IBA, you can rest assured that your ride, and every single other ride they certify, have been appropriately verified by a trained checker. They take the time to do it right, which is the reason for the delays. When their ride checking staff left, they stopped work, rather than succumbing to rider pressure and issuing certs without proper verification.

With Brand X, what verification process do they use? Who's to say that they don't just send out a cert as soon as they get your check, and throw away the receipts? Or what about questionable rides - do they follow up on the questions, or just give you the benefit of the doubt and issue the cert?

If all you want is a cert saying you rode 1000 in 24, hell, send me your stuff and I'll do my best to verify it. I'll print you a nice package. You can be Rider #1 in 518's LD Club. But if you want the gold standard in this sport, submit to the IBA and be patient.

I had never heard of him before this.  His name is Jack Powis and he lives in Florida.  Apparently he got PO'd by the wait for a IBA cert. and decided to start a new organization.  One of his things is that he will certify a ride of only 500 miles.  I guess this caters to the guys who can't ride 1,000 miles but still want to be considered "Bad to the Bone".

It's also interesting that he has no list of people he has certified.  Maybe it would be embarassing to have a page that only had his name on it?

What is it worth to you to get a certification from a guy nobody has heard of?  Hell if all you want is a certificate, go do the ride and for a couple bucks I will send you a e-mail you can print out to prove to your friends you did the ride.

Hey, I live in the town where George Thorogood cut his chops*, just around the corner from the baseball field he built...but I'll be damned if I'd ever want a certificate, or decal on my bike, saying I was "Bad to the Bone".  Couldn't this guy think of a better catch-phrase than that?

For what it is worth and yes I am biased but my first IBA submitted ride was in Oct 2007 and my cert and membership arrived Jan 2nd. if you read up on it on the IBA message boards the problems from 2006 are back under control. the great care taken in verifying the rides is what took the time but is that same attention to detail that means that a IBA cert is "trusted" as being legitimate. The others time will tell. JMHO

They are.  But I think there are probably limits to that.  I mean, think about it -- they've had thousands of people join over the last few years plus every other ride they certify, they run the Iron Butt Rally, they do the other Iron Butt events, and it's all volunteer.  That's a lot of work that other people are doing for nothing.  I'm not sure what people expect.  

And if a lot of people decide they want something from this new group, I hope that guy has a hell of a lot of friends.

On the surface it looks so similar to the IBA rides. Two exceptions to that is the IBA does not offer a 500 mile Long?? Distance ride.  And IBA has several Coast to Coast rides. On the LDR event they changed the time from 50 hours(IBA) to only 48 Hours(LDR).

Most Long Distance riders have heard of this organization but I cant truthfully say I know anyone that has used LDR for their rides and certificates.

So, my number (22810) is the equivalent of a LDRider number 3.

Way I see it is this. I am in Australia and there are members worldwide of the IBA. It MEANS something far greater than a quick turn around cert to put on your wall.

I might make a copy of my new 1400GTR and list it on Ebay as a 1400GTR. It may look like a GTR and go like one but will it have the same resale at a REAL Kawasaki 1400GTR.

I love the idea that although almost unknown here that I am part of a worldwide "family" of IBA members. I can count many instances where this has helped me or rather "they" the members have helped me. I likewise would and will do the same for any member coming down under to ride.
