I'm sure this question has been asked a (zillion) times and it's probably somewhere is past threads (too lazy to look):

How does one go about obtaining an Iron Butt Award? (besides riding long distance)?

You can earn membership into the IBA by completing a SadddleSore 1000, which is a ride of 1000 miles in 24 hours. Design your own route, get a start witness and and end witness, and collect all your gas receipts during the ride. Submit the witness forms and the receipts to the IBA, and they'll validate your ride and send you the certificate. Details here.

Expanding a bit on that...

There is no way to obtain one without riding long distances.

The IBA's web site is http://www.ironbutt.com.  Rules and forms and descriptions of documentation needed for rides, etc., can be found there.

As noted above, the SS1K is the ride you need to complete to earn membership.  If you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up witnesses, etc., you can find organized SS1K rides where everything except keeping track of your own receipts is done for you.  Some long distance rallies, like the Mason Dixon 20-20 (http://masondixon20-20.org/), have designated SS1K routes for noobs who want to take the plunge.

For the SS1k, witness requirements are pretty easy to satisfy, particularly if your start and end point are the same.  I just had my wife sign my witness forms.  The rest of the documentation is just timestamped gas station receipts.  I actually enjoyed the documentation process.

But yeah, you can't get an IBA long distance award without actually riding a long distance.   Lol

1000 miles in 24 hours really isn't a big deal.  I did my first SS1000 in 17.5 hours, no problem at all.  Thinking of an SS2000 next if I can manage to sneak away for a weekend.

The IBA doesn't have membership in the more traditional sense. You can't just send money and get a membership. Do a ride, submit your documentation, and if all is well, you get a certificate. With that first cert., you become a "member".

But, out of curiosity, why would you expect to get an award without doing anything to earn it ? If you don't want to ride long distance, why would you want to belong to a long distance group ? Go plan a ride, and go on out there and just do it. If nothing else, it's a good skill to have if you ride very much. You just never know when you absolutely must ride a 1000 mile day. ( Illness in the family, job calls you back, etc. ??? )

Thanks.. all.. for the information. I have been on a few rides that would declare me an Iron Butt recipient. However... didn't know the details about filing for 'the club'.

Last June, rode from Sacramento, California to Laurier, Washington. Was a cold and wet ride. Went up through Winnemucca, Nevada. Was a bad choice as the desert on 95 went on (forever). Lewiston, Idaho stank of pulp mills but made way for a beautiful trip into the winding hills on 95. And.... Coeur d'Alene Lake = spectacular!!!

Thumbsdown   Do not use Key West for the SSK.

It takes wwaaayy too much time to get there and time is not your friend.  Too much 35 mph  and heavily patrolled    Sad

     EEK! Thumbsdown

Don't use Key West for a timed ride (SS, BB, BBG, etc.).  The trip from the main land down will kill you.  Mostly 35 - 40  and patrolled.   You cannot make any time
