ZX-11 cams in a GPz - implications?

(1/5) > >>

PhilBiker:
I need new cams for my '95 GPz, and they've been on backorder for weeks.  Considering that the GPZ hasn't been sold for 11 years in the USA, it's possible that ZX-11 cams may be an easier option to acquire.  What are the implications of dropping the ZX-11 cams which were designed for downdraft/ram-air configuration into the GPz-1100.  Anybody know?

1KPerDay:
The GPZ cams are a bit more 'high-performance' than the ZRX1100 cams, and the GPz cams are a hot item on the ZRX hop-up boards for that reason.

The ZX-11 cams are similarly 'peaky' when compared to the GPz cams. The ZX-11 was way more "top-endy" than the GPz, which was tuned for very flat, broad torque curve (which is one of the things that makes it a super-awesome bike :bigok: ). Several people have dropped ZX-11 cams into the Geep, but I'm not personally aware of one that ONLY did that without also modifying other things, displacement, compression, jetting, etc.

You might want to post your question on the GPz1100 mailing list; betcha someone there will know for sure.

My first instinct tells me that if you ONLY change the cams, you'll lose a bunch of low- and midrange, and possibly gain a bit of top end HP (but remember that the ZX-11 had ram-air and semi-downdraft carbs, etc....)

Why do you need new cams? Pitting? who says you need to replace them? Lots of guys have been running pitted cams in the big Kawis for years and years with "no issues."

PhilBiker:
From what I've been told by an independant shop that I trust, the cams are far beyond pitted, the nickel coating on the cam lobes is pretty much copmpletely gone.  I've read on the GPZlist about this happening on other high-mileage GPzs (mine has 72K) so I'm not really surprised to hear it.  I wonder if I could get somebody's ZRX 11 cams into my bike?  I don't care about the higher max power.

I've had a great deal of trouble with the GPz list over the last year.  Nothing I've posted has gotten through; I posted this question to the list about a week or so ago and haven't recieved it since.

Really? I didn't see the post... :headscratch:

I BELIEVE the ZX-11 cams should drop right in.

PhilBiker:
BTW this shop has done at least two valve adjustment jobs on this bike in the last 30K miles.  Both times they noted the pitted cams, both times they said it's not a problem ... yet.... :)
