Roland Sands creates a custom Ducati Hypermotard
Posted Feb 1st 2008 6:03PM by Jeremy Korzeniewski
Filed under: Euro, Motorcycles

Roland Sands is no stranger to fast bikes, nor is it outside his normal realm to modify a V-Twin-based machine. Usually, though, those V-Twins are from Harley Davidson. Sands goes a bit outside the box with his latest custom creation, the Ultramotard, based upon a stock Ducati Hypermotard platform. We have no details on what exactly Sands has done to this beast, but a look at the photos definitely shows that not much went untouched. The Ducati "L-Twin" engine has certainly been modified, as you can see - but what changes, if any, were made inside the cases are as yet unknown. The snazzy paint job looks great, as do the custom dual exhaust pipes exiting off to the side. Performance Machine parts were used liberally, and those wheels are likely PM items that you'll be able to buy. Expect to see much more of this bike as it begins making the show circuit shortly.

I normally like Roland's custom work but that's just ugly.  He took a bike I seriously lust after and made me not want it anymore  Shrug

 Headscratch
The staggered exhaust...doesn't do it for me. The common RS wheels...doesn't he try anything different?  I guess it just doesn't do much for me. I'll take the blonde though.

I believe the blonde would provide more long term satisfaction.

I appreciate the work as a custom but he took a bike that handles amazingly well and threw on a huge back tire which means it will handle like crap. But, it is original.

I don't care for the wheels at all but the fact that it doesn't look like Alf anymore is a definite improvement over the original.

I think the front looks unbalanced without some front fender.

Dood, interesting bike. Did you customize it yourself, or was it all f*cked up when you bought it?

Doubtful. Leastwise for me.

I think the bike's pretty cool. Also, if you're go chop something as genuinely spare as a Duc Hyper, it's going to look pretty off the wall.

Well, seeing as I just came from the thread about the B-King, Roland's customized Ducati is looking pretty good in comparison...at least it's not as wide as a Hummer up front...

I also caught a long nice look at a custom KTM LC8 bike.  I believe it too was a Roland Sands.  But, I'll be darn if I can find anything about it on the world-wide-interweb thing.

It was very cool looking.  Has anyone else seen this?

I don't care for the exhaust and the wheels are only OK....but chopping the stupid-looking Spy vs. Spy beak off of the thing is a HUGE improvement.  Honestly, that's the first thing I'd do if I owned a HM, is attack that big beak with my Dremel and fit a proper front fender on the thing.

I like the paint scheme but other than that...... blech!  It looks like some work when into those pipes, but they look like arse.  I like the wheels, but too bad he puts them on every custom he builds!   Rolleyes

The Hypermotard looks waaaay cooler stock.

Im not a fan.  I can't handle the staggered exhaust, and the huge rear tire (coupled with a longer swingarm?) is going to hurt the handling, which is the main reason that I love it so much, nevermind the fact that it looks hot stock.  It may have been a lot of work, so props for that, but I just can't like it.  And I'm trying.
