Does anyone have experience/suggestions for a heated grip install on a Blackbird?

Many Thanks.   Smile

Not on Blackbird but I have Symtec Grip Heaters on my FZ1 and I like them. Install is pretty easy and this was my first electrical work on my bike.

Dual Star Heated Grips are a popular choice for Blackbird owners. Try to ping airborneXX as I know he has done the installation.

I installed the Dual Stars on my Blackbird. It's a piece of cake. And boy oh boy is it ever a nice feature! PM me if you have any questions.

I was thinking of the BMW Sport Touring grips, too - had them on the FJR and 1150RT.

Tanks!

Just put about 2 layers of electrical tape on the left bar for insulation. This will keep the temps even and still allow you to use a left grip. If you use thier insulator you might have to order 2 right grips.

Any opinions on the Symtec vs. the Duel Star?

I ask, as I've already ordered the Symtec's, but have yet to install them.

I did the same,,, my grips will actually blister my hands through my gloves on the high setting.

I used a plastic switch from Radio shack and installed a diode/light so i knew when it was on.

I jacked juice through the headlight and grounded somewhere close by.

I use Oxford heated grips on my 'bird. Can't use'em on more than 25%, or I'll get burned! Simple install, good quality. Recommended  Thumbsup

I must have missed this post... Sleepy

I installed a set of "Oxford HEATERZ" on my XX a few months back, and I freakin' love them.  They get VERY warm, I usually run them on the lowest setting.  Installation was super easy, it took all of 15 minutes.  The wiring harness and the grips themselves are very well made, and I could not be happier with them.

Oxford recently updated their control too, instead of a dial they use a push button unit. Its all water resistant,  I like it.  And if for some reason if the voltage drops below 11volts (if I remember right) then they automatically shut off to avoid draining your battery.  I'll never own another bike without heated grips!
I bought mine from here.  Good people, free candy in the box !   Lol  Very fast shipping too...

Symtec = Dual Star. Dual Star is reseller for Symtec.

for what its worth, I have the Symtec heating elements and the are designed for the clutch side to be warmer to account for the difference. I added shrink wrap on the clutch side and in my experience it is NOT needed (at least not with the symtec's). The clutch side warms up faster than the my throttle side. After a while they even out and I can't tell a difference. When I re-do mine I will install the element over the bare handlebar on the clutch side.

More heat = more draw, even if it is only on one side.  Heating elements are very users of power.

Anyone ever notice on a small 4 cylinder car,,,, when you hit the rear defroster, the rpms actually go up and the headlights dim?

OK, I have dual stars on my XX.  I love them.  However, what's the hooplah over BMW Sport Grips?  I have never used them.  Am I missing something?

I don't know if your missing something  Bigsmile .. but the Beemer ST grips work pretty well:

From an ergonomic perspective, the radius of the grip decreases from the outside in; that is to say, your fingers fit evenly over the grip.   The grips also do a good job absorbing vibration while still offering a feeling of control.

The first time I tried them was on the FJR. The grips were a huge improvement over the stock Yami stuff.
For the price ($12- $15 a side), you can't go wrong.

BTW:  I found a used/new pair at a BMW dealership for $10.00.

I also like the BMW sport grips.  They are a little smaller where your thumb and index finger wrap around and larger out towards your little finger.  The just fit my hand better.  The ribs also give better grip without hard spots.

I have Dual-Stars and they look exactly like the Symtecs but were less expensive.  They (Dual-star) were re-designed and there is a throttle side and clutch side to compensate for the throttle tube.  No diodes either.

I am planning on getting a set for my VFR.
