That Gold Mine Road is a good one! Thanks for the tip

Sure is!  I found that by accident on the way home from the Meet-and-Eat.  Except for a couple of grooved turns it's really sweet.

great route and thanks for your planning

I need to post a request for a tutorial on using google maps to do route planning like this - does it require a gps to mark the roads like you've done?

I'm a stone age map user .... (I've often ridden the 125/Hawk mtn parts of your route but flown by the seat of my pants and probably missed good stuff)

No Google Maps doesn't require a GPS.  When you 'get directions' on Google maps, you can grab the route and 'pull' it to different roads, creating what would be called a 'Via' point on the GPS.

I transfer to the GPS manually, inputting various 'Via' points till I get the route I created in Google.

Route GPX file for download - I hope this works right as I'm new to making Garmin files.

When I open this page, all I get is XML text.  Should I be trying to FTP the file?
[In which case I need to do it from my PC at home.  Why is it i always have issues with this stuff?]
Don't worry about it, I can manually input the route easily from Google maps.
Take me an hour, less hassle than figuring out obscene, I mean obscure downloading instructions.

It would be nice if you could download GPX from Google, but I couldn't find HOW TO directions in their HELP page, so I guess it's not possible.  If anyone knows how, I'd appreciate a clue.  Have done it from GroupRider.com with success.

Try to right-click and save the file, then open it in Map Source and transfer to GPS.  You don't need to use FTP to download the file.

Yeah if I could get a GPX out of Google it would be awesome, but I don't think you can.  There is a new plug-in that allows you to send waypoints directly to your GPS from Google, but at this point I don't think it can send routes.

My wife will be riding 2-up, she doesn't like being the only other spouse there either.

We are undecided about lunch or dinner or both, leaning towards dinner.

Since we`are locals (10mi.) my wife will skip the lunch and ride but will do dinner. If any one is coming in on Fri. and wants to ride Fri. or Sat.before lunch let me know. There`s also a Sun. morn breakfast at Mt.Gretna Fire co. which is about 25mi. from Stoudts. Good roads ,all you can eat plus plenty of bikes.

Yes if anyone wants to coordinate other rides or events, please post info.  This is a pretty informal meet-up so good help and ideas are great.

The 1pm ride that I am leading will be roller-coaster twisties with more than a few mountain hairpins .  I know some pillions, like my wife for instance, would not appreciate this kind of ride.  So, depending on interest, if anyone wants to offer a less intensive 2-up ride that would be great.  Dinner is a good idea if you are bringing your wife as it is a romantic restaurant.

Thanks for bringing up the Lawn Meet on Sunday, vpilot.  That is a great idea for breakfast on the way out of town.  http://www.lawnfire.com/  Thumbsup

Ok I have tweaked the route to include Maple Grove Road, Duryea Drive, 143, and Hawk Mountain Road.

You removed the Forest to Cocalico as that was a nice choice in the first ride.

Since it is only Monday I will check back for your update later in the week. Smile

That was a nice surprise as I had been on most of the roads in the area but somehow missed that one.

I was already thinking about shortcutting your suggested route.  We are fairly comfortable on these roads; my wife prefers 2-lanes over 4-lanes any day.  I wasn't sure of your exact route length.  I figure a 35 mph average speed (including stops) with a group.  A 140 miles in 4 hours is realistic for us 2-up, a 170 mile loop in 4 hours, with a break mid-way, would be pushing it.  So if there are some other folks who want to ride 2-up, we can split off into a separate group.  (I know I travel a little faster when the wife's not with, she knows it too, we don't talk about it much...) Thumbsup

Dinner sounds great.  Thanks for the tip on Sunday breakfast, it's close-by, anywhere from a 1 to 2 hour ride for us, if you know what I mean.

Yeah that Cocalico Road has a few sweet spots.  I will consider that but like Adamstown Rd to Vinemont Rd as well.  I have also thought it good to do Hill Road across 422 and then up through Charming Forge instead of bothering with Newmantown.

You may be right about the mileage and I will consider chopping off the Pagoda because it requires entering part of Reading and it's only 25mph anyway.

I'll be there at 12:30 - undecided if my wife will be along on her bike. She's a good rider on a Suzuki Intruder 800 - but if we are a bit spirited on bits like 125 (which I like to be) - I'd like to ride without being concerned about her.

Probably a good idea, as riding in Reading mid-day with a group could make the timingmore difficult.

I expect to have the 2.0 version of the route for review shortly.

We can take off together with two or more leaders in case of different paces.
