I just want to say I love Ringbolt wine.  Penfields is good, too.

Now, just what the hell is a vegemite sandwich?

Ol Rocket, Ring-bolt is a fine choice - but there are many excellent wine growing regions.

As for the Vegemite, it tastes better than it looks and is now owned by a US company. Info here >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite

Cheers Jules.

I have to admit that I'm growing quite fond of VB.   Please don't tell me if it's basically the Bud Lite of Australia.  rofl

Mmmm, beer.  Beerchug

OK, here's one for you...how does one order a XXXX beer?  I want to try one, but don't know whether to say "eks eks eks eks" or "4 eks" or whether there's some other nickname altogether.  Please help me not look like a total Yank spoon.  I did, for what its worth, finally figure out stubby versus schooner.   Thumbsup

Not quite... a schooner is measure of beer served from the tap in a pub and a stubbie is a mid size glass bottle of beer. But there is more. In the State of NSW a schooner is a large glass of beer at the pub and the small size at the pub is a middie. In the state of South Australia the schooner is the small serve and the large size ia a pint (in a country that metricated in the late 60's) Fun innit?

So can you get VB in the states?  I talked to a distributor a few years back and he said he hadn't heard of it.  I got a taste for it in Darwin back in Oct 2001.
I wasn't under the impresssion it was a cheap beer, just a very popular one, and for good reason.   Beerchug

My father-in-law and his squadron walked in to a bar in Darwin and sat down. They didn't know what to order, so the giant fellow next to them told them under no uncertain terms that they'd be drinking VB.

He was a super nice guy with whom they drank far too many rounds with that night for their own good.

I have visited Oz a few times and can testify that this will happen to you on a nightly basis there.

Best drinkers in the world those Aussies.

I'm a bit surprised that all the Australian contributors are being so polite.  Lol  Usually, any mention of beer and it's like waving a red flag at a bull and the arguments start.  Bash

I agree with Neil, the dark ales, stouts and porters are my favourites.   Beerchug

Pubs I can recommend:  The Wig and Pen in Canberra and The Brewery in Townsville.  Both pubs brew their own and they have some bloody good selections.  The Sail and Anchor in Fremantle was also good last time I was there - but that was about 15 years ago.  Maybe Neil can comment on that one.

In one of the links in Jeff N's post it mentions the Spotted Cow which is about 15km from my place.   At the moment this pub would be more at home in Calgary with the amount of 'cowboys' that go there!   They have a great selection of beers but last time I was there (a couple of months ago) they weren't brewing their own.

As far as VB goes, another nickname for it is Vomit Bomb.   Hurl  Yes, it is the Bud Light of Oz - although I don't know anyone who drinks Fosters.

When I was in Philadelphia I managed to buy Fourex from a bottle shop.  I believe it's brewed under licence in Canada and it tasted bloody great after about two months of American beer which, to put it politely, was not to my liking.   I can understand why you guys drink spirits.   Lol

Me old man once worked for the contractor that built breweries for Anheuser Busch and I always got the factory tour with the brewmeister. Herr Brewmeister was a paid victim but had his own private stash. Of the stuff that eventually was turned out the factory, Herr BM said he wouldn't give it to his dog. His privvy was another matter; a fine lager that was.

Underage? You bet your bottom dollar I was.  Beerchug

Was in OZ some 20 years ago. (I know, I'm an old fart.) Victoria Bitter was actually the best beer I could find. Thank God for the micro-beer movement. Now, there is some damn fine beers out there. Now, if only Ireland will catch on. Was there earlier this year and all you could get out of most pub taps or package stores was three or four choices.  Sad
