Pick up a KTM 450 EXC today. Been trying to sell the Aprilia Futura but no takers. So went to the KTM dealer and traded in the Futura on a KTM. Now I will be ready for some dual sport.

I stopped in at the local KTM shop when I noticed mirrors in the sea of orange. They have the 2007 450 and 525 EXC in stock. Threw a leg over the 525. Wow is that puppy light. I'm in lust... Just WAY expensive.

Cricket,

Congrats on the new scoot!!  I love my KTM, great bike!  Some of us are going to try to slip over to ES last part of March for a DS ride.  Couple days worth.  Interested?  I'll post a link to more info later.

Late last fall I picked up a 2001 LC4 640E.  It's the DS version.  Awesome bike!  Absolute blast to ride, street or woods!  Here's a link to the ES ride.  It's the end of March, so it could be cold.  http://www.backroadstouring.org/kansas/index2.htm  Hope to see you then!

Good looking bike looked it up on the internet.  Thumbsup

What kind of modification have been done?

I have a million question to bring my KTM up to speed. When riding the YZ it was not tough motocross boots , gloves, eye protection, helmet ,chest protection and  shirt  and paints.

The bike came with a Doma full pipe on it, and carb rejetted to match.  Other than that, I think it's bone stock.  Runs great!  Gobs of useable power!  Suspension is really good for me too.  I've put about 1K on mine and done nothing to it.  Needs nothing either.

Maintenance on the KTM's is about like anything else.  Go to KTMtalk and look around there.  Lots of good info for working on the EXC.  My bud Tye just bought an '01 400EXC that he's going to DS.  He's did alot of research before buying.  He's confident the maintenance really isn't any more intensive than anything else.

If yours is stock, I'm sure there's some power to be had with a jet kit and pipe, but that's up to you.  Other than setting up the suspension, gear up and just go!  Change the oil fairly often as the EXC's hold less oil than the LC4's.  I'd keep the first couple of valve checks pretty close to recommended, then start spacing them out a little more.  IIRC, in '03 they made some significant changes all around in all their bikes for the better.  Later!!

I work weekend nites now, so Thursdays I stay up most of the night and sleep till noon or so, getting prepared for the weekend.

I think Clark, IMS, and Acerbis all make tanks for them.  Do some checking, but I was thinking a 1 peice tank from a MXC works and is larger as well.  Not for sure tho.

Here's a thread from KTMTalk about a dualsported 05 EXC525.  Lots of aftermarket bling info:

That exc 450 is such a sweet bike. Enjoy it! Thumbsup

I may end up with one at some point if I can scrap up the funds. Anyone know the nitty gritty between the 450 and 525? From what I can tell it is the same bike and same engine but with a longer stroke. Oh and I think the fuel take is larger on the 525. But other then that they seem identical.

Yeah, the 525 is INSANELY fast!!!  The 450 will merely pull your arms out of their sockets!  Seriously tho, it depends on the riding you do.  The 525 is better in open areas, sandy stuff.  In tight woods the 525 is too much work trying to keep the power to the ground.  The 450 is generally considered the best of both worlds.  Light enough on the throttle that it makes for a great woods bike, but still has enough power for the open stuff.  A buddy just bought a 400EXC, and I can't wait to ride it.  I've got a LC4 640 which is about the same power output as the 400, but the 400 is 30-40 pounds lighter.  Ought to be a hoot!!
