The Region 4 folks gave me an idea. Are people interested in a mileage contest for the 2007 riding season? Since some of us have to park the bikes for the winter we could do an April 1 - Oct 31. The BMWMOA has a similar event. We could make it flexible and ask people to pick any 6 or 7 consecutive months. The honour system could be in effect.

What say you? Maybe somebody could set up an Excel sheet where everyone could post their starting and ending odometer readings. We Canucks and the few Euros and southern hemisphere folks could do our own metric conversions.

Sounds interesting!

As a newbie here, what kind of mileage do you anticipate people will enter? I've done 14,000 miles in the past twelve months (which seems like a ton of miles to me). Do you expect that's above average? Below average? Just curious.

Nahhh, some silly SoCal commuter will likely win this one!

Last year: appx 8000 miles.  This year:  appx 18000 miles (est.).  I don't commute either - that's all fun riding.

18000 miles, avg. of 38 mpg.  That's 473.68 gallons of fuel.  At an est. average of $2.90 per gallon = $1,373 in fuel costs.  Three sets of tires at $240 a set - $720.  Miscelaneous vehicle repairs and expenses:  $1000 (to be safe...)

Total cost:  appx $3000 in expenses for my hobby.

Hell, that's cheap compared to the costs of my shooting expenses!

I like it.  We did this on another forum I frequent.  Name the start date and I'm in with pics of my odometers on that day.  That's how we tracked it on the other site.

Jeeze if you guys don't want to participate then don't.

I just found out that with 20,619 miles for last year that I won the high mileage mark over on the Hayabusa.org site. And that doesn't include the 2,500 on the Transalp or other bikes and it's only for a half year of riding (basically) since I started working from home in August so no commuter mileage either.

Anyway, I'm for it and I'll volunteer my services to manage it. It could be interesting Smile

If you're interested, just post up a picture of your odometer(s) any time as your starting mileage. Include a written piece of paper with the date and your name or a copy of today's headlines with the date visible. Ultimately there needs to be a visible start mileage. On mine below, click on the image to see the full pic and you can see the start miles on both bikes Smile

During the year you can post your mileage at the end of each month (I'll send you a PM reminding you about a week prior to due dates).

At the end, post another picture of your odometer(s). That'll be the end mileage.

Here are my starts:

Hayabusa: 56298

http://www.schelin.org/20070101/DSCN8125.JPG

I'm a BMWMOA member for 26 years and have never entered their contest. I'd rather ride for my own pleasure than make everything in life a contest. I've averaged 18k a year for the past 26 years and managed 24k in 2006 with a recovery period for bladder/prostate surgery - Ouch! I attended a local CMA chapter meeting where they were handing out a monthly award for highest mileage. Being new I just sat and watched as the recipient got the plaque for 1,500 in one month. That's a worthy amount. One of the officers looked at me and asked how many miles I'd put on in the two months since I moved to Oregon and I fessed up to 6,000 in two months. Hey, It's a beautiful state!

No problem as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps we'll get a few folks off their keisters to go for a ride, if nothing else to participate. And of course, participation is certainly not manditory.

I have a webpage up to track mileage. http://www.schelin.org/20070101/index.php

(I'm mucking about with my firewall rules so if it's not available immediately, the rules are reset every 15 minutes on the quarter, so I can get back in if I muck something up so badly I can't get back in (like I did about an hour ago Rolleyes Bigsmile ))

Sounds good. A collective mileage log as well.
It will be interesting see the the total accumulated mileage by all riders. I know I won't have the most individual miles, but I don't think that is what this is about anyway. Smile Headscratch

I will be watching this develop and hopefully get my act together to submit "before and after" shots.

Um, since the "contest" doesn't start until April 1 (?), why are people posting odo pics and stuff now?

Another small web forum I frequent had a similar mileage contest. I won for 2006 with a measly 14K or so from 4/15 to 10/15 (18,500 for the calendar year). I'm guessing that at least 20K in the 7 month period will be needed to even be in the running.

I'll be in, just for fun. I'm going to ride how much I ride (mostly fun, very little commuting or slab). But since I'm an anal-retentive engineer, I keep track of stuff like mileage and maintenance in a spreadsheet.

Good point, the BMW MOA contest runs from mid April to mid October.  That is "typically" the peak period for most folks (cont. US anyway).  Guess I will post new pics of ODOs that coincide with the MOA deal.

I dunno. Did we pick 6 months vs a year? I know I ride all year so I hadn't considered limiting it, however I can see how the lower states vs the snowed in states would make it a little unfair Smile

Just in case you can't read it - 8,868 miles on the odometer.

Ok here's my revised take on this deal.

1. I regret using the term "contest"
2. I was hoping this would just be a fun thing and not really care a rats ass who wins (actually that just gave me the idea that whoever claims victory can win a rats ass. Somebody must have an old stuffed toy? It could be bestowed upon the "not-a-contest-winner" at a future meet. Perhaps it could be a female rats ass to keep Chili company)
3. To keep it simple (no pics, no witnesses, no whatever...) all you have to do is enter the odo reading onto a spreadsheet at the beginning and end.
4. Why don't we just use the same dates as the MOA folks which constitutes the peak riding season for most of North America? That means April 15th to Oct 15th
5. I assume some people will cheat. I don't understand why, but whatever........on the other hand, maybe I'm assuming something that's dumb. Maybe everyone will play it straight? And yes, I do believe in Santa Claus.....................and world peace.   Rolleyes
6. Since I'm a techno dummy, we need someone that can provide an accessable spreadsheet so we can follow along.

I agree with keeping it simple, however I have to believe most of us have digital cameras based on the pics that have been posted. We can certainly go with just posting the odo though, not trying to be difficult Smile

As long as there's no prize, cheating shouldn't be a big deal. Of course there are those who'll do it just to cheat but there's not much you can do about that.

Yea, but I don't imagine we'll have 10,000 entries Smile All the ones I've participated in have had no more than 100 and if you don't provide the info, it's not updated. Heck, you only really need to provide the starting and ending numbers so even that's not all that big of a burden.

But it's a flat file so adding/updating isn't that big a deal. Besides, someone has to make the entries. If it's open to anyone to make changes, who knows how that might work out Smile Besides, it's my website and server. Gotta do something with it Bigsmile

Here's a thought.  At the end of the year, figure out who has the highest year total, the highest six month total, and the highest per month average.  Then up to 3 people get a big  Thumbsup

I have just one question;

Just where do you intend to stick that big  Thumbsup      Confused

Just Kidding - I will take a piccy of my odo in the next couple of days and help fill out the bottom thrid of the group.  In the past I've gotten around 5k miles per year.  Most of those miles have been commuting, but this year I hope to make more with a few more weekender type trips.

So what do you do if you ride multiple bikes?  Add up all the miles you have ridden on all the bikes during that time period?

I have them in separate entries right now but they're miles you've ridden during the year, so why not?

Sounds interesting!

As a newbie here, what kind of mileage do you anticipate people will enter? I've done 14,000 miles in the past twelve months (which seems like a ton of miles to me). Do you expect that's above average? Below average? Just curious.

- Tom

Well I'll be doing about 13,000 the last week of August and first week of Sept.
