I'm seriously thinking about - but I would have a very long negotiation with RNA should I get in to make it happen.

I threw my entry into the box, again. This time as a 2-up couple hoping it increases my chances. Passed over in '07 as a single.

I'm right there with you. For '07, I had already decided that if drawn, I needed to buy a new bike. When I didn't get drawn, I ended up buying a new bike anyway. LOL

If drawn for the '09 ride, all I have to worry about is stocking up on final drives and distributing them across the US.

Good luck everyone!!!

Any of you "Premier members"?

Sounds like a good way to spend $40 bucks - and increase your chances 2X.  Oh well.

Application sent - did you get an Application recieved email" when you sent it in?  I have not yet.

I received one.  But it took a while.  I am pretty sure the rally mistress does them it batches.  If you don't get the application acknowledgement approximately 2-3 weeks after sending it in, you then might want to make an inquiry.

Sure would be interesting to know how many apply.

Good luck.

I have the strong sense that one of our guys will get in.  Cheers to us all! Thumbsup

If they do - there will be a need for allowable friendly assistance for oil - tires, etc.

The stops in 2009 are:

The 2009 Iron Butt Rally will take off on Monday, August 24, 2009, from the southeastern US. Once again, it will be a challenge not only to your riding skills but also your ability to map a successful route in order to maximize points and solve the time/distance equation. In no particular order, the checkpoints/Finish will be in Washington State, the Chicago, Illinois area and the Southern California area.

What say you we all try to organize what ever assistance might needed at these locations?  How about a STN crew for tire dump - oil etc...

I am certainly willing to help all I can if someone needs it and the site is within 300 miles of NoVA.

This of course assuming I am not in it (finger crossed for both options Crazy).

+1.  I about wore out my road atlas trying study every possible road the rally could take.  It really doesn't matter in the end, it's all about sitting in the seat and watching the odometer roll over, and over, and over...

It's like going to the moon or the top of Everest.  You plan for it, and it's still different than you think it's going to be.  And although others have done it before, the accomplishment is all yours.

I was waffling on whether to apply, even though it would be a long shot. In the end, I didn't send in an application for the drawing. My wife strongly suggested I not apply due to the cost, and my mental and physical condition following the 2006 Butt Lite.

So if 20 get pulled from the last draw I have a ~ 2.8% chance.

I can live with those odds.

Lisa told me a few weeks ago she had 700 email applications

700? I can live with 700. I remember stories that it was thousands. Either people have wised up, or those old numbers were just rumors.

Let's make some ASSumptions and do some math.
100 rally vets apply
300 IBA Premier members apply
300 normal people apply

1st drawing = 35 rally vets
Vets have a 35% chance of getting picked. That's only one in three. Pretty good!
The remaining 65 vets go into the new rider bin.

2nd drawing = 35 IBA Premier members
Premier members have an 11.6% chance of getting picked. That's a little better than one in one in nine. Not so great, but still decent.
The remaining 265 Premiers go into the new rider bin.

3rd drawing = 20 new riders
The new rider bin has now swollen to 630 riders, competing for a mere 20 slots. That's a 3% chance, or one in 32. Pretty slim odds.

The moral of our story is, if you want to ride the IBR you better be a rally veteran!  Lol

I really have nothing better to do until I get an email from Lisa...

I get two draws - Premier and general, so I'm figuring my odds at 10:1

Its an application process. The details are on http://www.ironbutt.org/ in the Iron Butt Rally section of the Forum.  The 2009 Rally application deadline was 3/15/08.  There's alway 2011   Smile

I think it's a mixed bag. Some folks get invited, some folks go through the lottery. Even after your name gets drawn I'm sure there's some sort of vetting process.

What do you mean, Tom? We're going to have all the time in the world. They're giving us the waypoints in computer format. Routing shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes, tops!

Instead of the mechanic service that was in St. Louis for 07 (Gateway BMW I think it was), someone needs to take up Jim Bain's (CapeFear 1000) Hooters idea and instead get a bunch of Hooters girls to run a bike wash at one or all of the checkpoints. Granted ... some of those IBR guys have a boatload of electronics ... don't know how well that would hold up to Hooters girls with hoses. LOL
