I'm almost afraid to ask this question but I feel I'm with friends on the Honda board. OK here goes.

I'm 51 and bought this mint 02 with 5700 miles on it because I rode 600's of my kids and there friends and fell in love with the power/weight/handleing combination. (This one had highest bars and is pretty comfy for a couple hrs at a time.)
When I took it for a test ride I noticed the engine rattled and was kinda noisy at certain RPM gear combinations. Researching this I soon found out that the stock cam chain tensioner was poorly engineered (or management cheapened it up?).
My search for the fix came up with the manual aduster bolt. It was not easy but I found one in CA. Where its located it was a real bitch putting it in without having to almost take the engine out. Luckily my kid has thinner hands.
We adjusted as per some installation guidlines I found on the web but I'm worried it may not be perfect. I'd like to have a good mechanic check it out. I have 11K miles on it now but don't need my valves check until 16K. Can it be checked right without having to rip into the top end?

FWIW, I would note where its currently adjusted (with respect to full out or full in) and run the adjuster out until it begins to slap again then turn it back in 1/2 turn. Check that setting against your original adjustment to see if you were close. Certainly nothing scientific but it may ease your mind. Then again, maybe those were the web instructions. Shrug

And for $60 you could go back to Honda and ask for the new and improved version. P/N 14520-MBW-J23 replaces P/N 14520-MBW-J21 which was the original.

You might do a search over at CBRWorld.net if you haven't already. I can’t remember why, but I had decided to just put in another stock part if and when the original went bad. I know the Superhawk suffered from the same problem, so you might check over at SuperHawk Forum as well.
