Pictures of the Province of New Brunswick (Now with 2009 updates)

Here’s some pictures taken in the Province of New Brunswick with my digital camera that I bought in 2005.  I have many more non digital pictures but I would have to scan them in.  Maybe later.  

I’ll post some of those that I took in the Province of Nova Scotia including the Cabot Trail in another thread later this week.  If anybody else has pictures of New Brunswick, please post them here.

New Brunswick is not known to have the greatest roads but we make it up with hospitality and friendliness.    

Anybody that knows me know that I like to take pictures of covered bridges.  We still have 64 of them standing in New Brunswick.  


This one was built in 1917 and is located off Rte 1 near Sussex.

In Southern New Brunswick, we have a number of cable ferries




In Southwest New Brunswick, we have a few Islands.  One of them is Campobello Island.

I plan on riding to / from the Cabot trail sometime in 2009.  I can't wait to see more of that corner of the world.

  great pics, but is it really necessary to have a stop sign on the off ramp of a ferry... really one would think maritime rs would know better than taking an automobile into the bay. Although if they can sail a rough cut punt and make a punt cut rough I suppose they can float anything

Sweet, I'd like to see that for myself. In 2006 I rode the Seward Highway along Alaska's Turnagain Arm's, second highest tide in North America, Canada's Bay of Fundy being the highest.

Thanks for the memories. In 1986 immediately after retirement from the USAF, I meandered down the St Lawrence valley to Gaspe' then turned south to NB and NS! Beautiful country and great folks.

I'm pretty sure I have a picture of that first covered bridge (off Rt 1 near Sussex) with my '99 Bandit parked in the same spot.  If not, it's a bridge and surroundings that look nearly identical - I'm just not sure where I was when I took the pic...

I found some pictures of the Hopewell Rocks that I took in 1988 and scanned two of them.  Probably not quite as good as Shil's picture.  Anybody wanting to visit them has to go at low tide.  Here's the official web site.

What is the riding like around St. Andrews by the Sea ? I had a girlfriend from there and she regaled me with stories of what a beautiful place it was and how good the beaches were. Would love to visit someday.

I just happen to have some pictures of the main drag in St.Andrews that I took in Aug 2005.  

There is a lot of boating around St.Andrews in the summer but I never heard of any nice beaches around there.  Technically, it is on the Passamaquoddy Bay and the water from that Bay goes in the cold Bay of Fundy and vice versa.  I don't think you want to swim in it.

BZ, if your GF was talking about nice beaches, she was most likely talking about the beaches along the East Coat of the Province.  And surprise surprise, since you asked   it just so happens that I have some pictures of the Bouctouche Dune.  It is 7 miles long dune that stretches out in the relatively warm Northumberland Strait near my home town of Bouctouche located 30 miles of Moncton. There is a 1.2 mile boardwalk on it where you can have a romantic walk with a GF or SO.  The pictures were taken in the Month of October, thus explaining the deserted beach.

No picture thread of NB is complete without a shot of the world's longest covered bridge in Hartland.  One should make an effort to go ride it as it is a unique experience.

Having driven the coastal road between Campbellton (at the QC border) and Port Elgin (at the NS border), I was quite disappointed at how little the roads offered views of Chaleur Bay, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait.

So if anyone is going in hopes of that, don't expect to.

The coastal highway (132) around Gaspesie offered nothing but gulf/bay views over its entire length.

Global Rider, I agree with you that the road around Gaspésie is more scenic and longer than the Acadian Coast of New Brunswick.  However, there is more road along the Acadian coast than most people realize when they drive down.  They are just not as well indicated and no one road follows the coast all the way.

In case you didn't know, New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual (French - English) province in Canada. This picture is a testament to that in our Acadian way of translating from English.  It was taken at the Miramichi Dragway Park on the East side of the Province.

Global Rider, I agree with you that the road around Gaspésie is more scenic and longer than the Acadian Coast of New Brunswick.  However, there is more road along the Acadian coast than most people realize when they drive down.  They are just not as well indicated and no one road follows the coast all the way.

I drove the 11 from Campbellton to Bathhurst and instead of taking the 8 straight down to Miramichi (home of that useless gun registry, don't get me going), I continued along the 11 to Grand Anse, Inkerman and Tracadie hoping to find some coastal highway. Nope, none to be found. Maybe if I took the 134 along the Baie de Chaleur instead of the 11, it would have been a more scenic ride.

I continued down the 11 to Shediac and then took 15, 955 and 960 (Cape Tormentine) where I got a glimpse of the Confederation bridge.

The Bay of Fundy side doesn't look much better...or?

If you want to see water from Campbellton to Bathurst, you have to take the 134 not the 11.  It's not going to be fast or full of motorcycle twisties but you'll see the Chaleur Bay all along.  From Bathurst to Caraquet on the 11, there is some water, perhaps not all the way but most of it.  I think I know, I lived in Bathurst for 3 years and did that road on a regular basis. You do have to avoid the bypass coming out of Bathurst and join the 11 a bit further.  

From Caraquet to Miramichi on the 11, I would agree that you don't see a lot of water but there are some spots where you do see it.  As you approach Miramichi, the water you see is the Miramichi Bay, not the open sea.  

If you stay on the coast on Rte 117, you see water for short periods in Baie Se-Anne, Escuminac and Pointe-Sapin before entering Kouchibouguac National Park.  

Once in Richibucto it gets more complicated but there is lots of water (Northumberland Strait) to be seen. You simply have to zig zag on different Rte numbers and they are not very well marked for those who don't know them.  For example, there are routes 475, 535, 530, 950 and others. In New Brunswick, the higher the numbers, the more secondary they are.

............and then there is the road up the East side of the St. John River. Pretty as all getout as it goes through all the small villages, although the pavement is very rough in places.
