From the AP:
Quote
Boyd Coddington, Car-Building Legend of the TV Reality Show 'American Hot Rod' Dies at 63
By JEFF WILSON
Associated Press Writer
(AP) 07:45:41 AM (ET), Thursday, February 28, 2008 (LOS ANGELES)

Car-building legend Boyd Coddington, whose testosterone-injected cable TV reality show "American Hot Rod" introduced the nation to the West Coast hot rod guru, has died. He was 63.

Coddington died at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in suburban Whittier at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday. His La Habra office spokeswoman Amanda Curry wouldn't disclose the cause of death.

He's one of the auto world's versions of Jesse James and OOC.

An incredibly creative man that was a terrible businessman.

But a loss indeed.

I worked just blocks from his place, and was always amazed at what was in front of that place.

Jesse James, according to my cousin, is actually quite nice to work with.  He's done a bunch of construction for JJ.  Boyd always seemed like an arse, much more like Paul Sr.

Boyd's shop turned out some rather impressive rides though.

Being an ass is one of the requirements of this kind of show, because hey, let's face it, routing brake lines is only interesting so many times.  Wink

One wonders what Chip Foose might be thinking right now

His first wife on the other hand.....should have bee shot for being such a flaming ugly bitch!
His second one should have had more air time!

From what I understood Foose was  partners with Boyd once upon a time (not sure if it was Chip or his Dad)

Chip was his head designer and left to start his own business.  Don't think they were ever partners though.  Not sure about Foose's dad.

Couple of thoughts...

1) He was an amazing talent.
2) He was not a good boss or businessman.  How many people quit or walked on that show?
3) Paul Sr. is a loud moth, but his employees loved him and no one ever quit.  AND OCC made an assload more dough than Boyd ever did.
4) He hated Foose...and I'm pretty sure it was mutual.  Remember the episode where his body guy quit to go do a special car for Foose.  Boyd told him to never come back.  Yeah and Foose quit working for him too.  What kind of boss lets that kind of talent just walk?
5) The guy probably had a heart attack from the stress of dealing with pissed off employees all the time.

RIP Boyd.  You were one hard working and talented dude.

pfft....

wrong

Vinnie and that young kid left last year to start their own business. I'm sure others have left, but those 2 guys were 2 of the biggest part of his business, and the kid should have felt like he owed Paul Sr. a lot for giving him the opportunity to work there.
