I transfered my car and two bikes from MI to CO and I could have bought plane tickets to MI twice and have enough to register my vehicles in MI. What are the license plates made out of, gold?

It's a VAT (value added tax).  The more your vehicle is worth, the more you pay.  Each year as it gets older, the tax drops.  When I first lived here, I was in the military and we were VAT exempt.  I think I paid $15 each year for any vehicle.  Then In 98 when I retired, I went in and registered a new Jeep Wrangler (not an expensive vehicle), and had to pay $400!  It was a real eye opener.   With multiple cars, trucks, and bikes, it gets pretty expensive.

Save the receipts, by the way, if you itemize.  In states which use that VAT approach to registrations, you can deduct that tax.

In 2002 I bought two new Audi's in CO.  About $950 each for plates.  It's down to a couple hundred each now.

Motorcycle was about $350 for a plate.

The bulk is a 'property tax' and you can deduct that from your federal taxes.
