RIP Gary Gygax

If you don't know who he was, he's probably the single most influential person that lead to most of the online mmos, RPG, and adventure games being played on computers, console systems and table tops across the planet.

Bummer, I played d&d in the mid to early 80s. Great memories.
I wonder if my 1st edition of the players handbook would be a collectors item now?

Gamer from way back here too... RIP Gary.
And Mac, I think it probably is if it's in good condition.
Back in the day I tended to play Traveller over D&D. I still have an almost complete set of the old half-size books for it as well as a bunch of other stuff (Car Wars, Call of Cthulu, Space Master, Champions and yes, D&D) - just not too easy to find a good group of players any more...

Hell, I'm gonna play Fallout for the rest of the night in his memory. (Since I was going to anyway)
My wife's office is surrounded on either side by the offices of fellow gamers. They call the distinct nerdy aura the three of them generate the Gygax limit.

Check at your local comic shop, the real one not the one in the mall.
Also try yahoo groups or meetup. Both are pretty good, but sometimes you have to go old school and go to the store.

I loved Call of Cthulhu, and yes, I played Traveller more than any other RPG. Just the other day I was talking to a friend about Paranoia... I do sometimes miss those games, but I just wouldn't have the time now to play.

We used to play Paranoia a lot too. And another one I stumbled over a website for just the other day, The Morrow Project. I've rarely run into anyone else that has played that but we had a huge group for it at one point in the late 80s.

I've never laughed so damn hard in my life. Many late night's ended up with a pissed off GM as we managed to kill each other over and over and over again.

Lots of good times with Paranoia. And I had a few friends who were seriously into The Morrow Project - don't remember ever getting in on a game myself though...
Anyone else remember Toon? We had a GM who was perfect for that game. He could do many of the classic cartoon styles (Warner Brothers & Hannah-Barberra) perfectly. I think he's a Canadian customs agent these days... Was in a kick-ass Middle Earth campaign for several years too. The guy running that game knew Tolkien inside-out.
Biggest problem lately with finding other gamers is we've been living in a town of about 4500 people - not a big pool to draw from unfortunately... And as Miles said, trying to get a group of busy adults together to game can be a bit of a challenge.

RIP Mr. Gygax. I too spent way more time and $$$ on his creations while younger (still have some of it socked away at my folks house... 1st editions anyone?)
It's pretty obvious though that many people net-wide were truly touched by his legacy... The instant response from todays geekdom is testament (and I'm calling that a plus, since I'm right there with y'all)

Yep, there's an
Order of the Stick
tribute comic up as well. Order of the Stick is frigging hilarious if you've played any RPG but D&D specifically.
I still play RPGs. Paranoia and Shadowrun are my current games of choice but I played a lot of other games back in the day including original D&D, Car Wars, Talisman, Cosmic Encounters, and yes even war games like Panzer Blitz, Wooden Ships and Iron Men, and Richthofen's War.
If you do want to find a local group (even in Fernie BC
), you might check
Pen and Paper Games
. They have a pretty decent locater project going.

Ah, memories.
I never knew there was a large box set for Illuminati. When I was playing it a bunch it was still packaged in the small Steve Jackson boxes. Runequest, too- I never saw a boxed set.
Also, I like how very thrashed your DM's Guide is!

Yea, I had quite a few of the pocket games from Steve Jackson. The boxed set came with a couple of decks of cards for all the groups.
Tomorrow a couple of guys from the gaming group are dropping by with their computers for some help and a few more (Nathan, Travis, Wendy, and Ray) may drop by for some gaming. I just picked up the Gloom card game so we're going to try that out.
Quote
Gloom:
The Game of Inauspicious Incidents
and Grave Consequences
The world of Gloom is a sad and benighted place. The sky is gray, the tea is cold, and a new tragedy lies around every corner. Debt, disease, heartache, and packs of rabid flesh-eating mice -- just when it seems like things can't get any worse, they do. But some say that one's reward in the afterlife is based on the misery endured in life. If so, there may yet be hope -- if not in this world, then in the peace that lies beyond.
In the Gloom card game, you assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes. The goal of the game is sad, but simple: you want your characters to suffer the greatest tragedies possible before passing on to the well-deserved respite of death. You'll play horrible mishaps like Pursued by Poodles or Mocked by Midgets on your own characters to lower their Self-Worth scores, while trying to cheer your opponents' characters with marriages and other happy occasions that pile on positive points. The player with the lowest total Family Value wins.
Printed on transparent plastic cards, Gloom features an innovative design by noted RPG author Keith Baker. Multiple modifier cards can be played on top of the same character card; since the cards are transparent, elements from previously played modifier cards either show through or are obscured by those played above them. You'll immediately and easily know the worth of every character, no matter how many modifiers they have. You've got to see (through) this game to believe it!
I also have the two expansion packs (Unhappy Homes and Unwelcome Guests) in case more than 4 folks show up. Should be fun.

Squad Leader is another fave. I love it when the Rooskies attain bezerk status. Ogre was cool, too. I played these games like all get out, then I discovered girls.

And then there was the legendary "Ring of Gaxx"...
Geez, I was in 4th grade, maybe third, when D&D hit the shelves. Talk about a legacy!
RIP Gary.
Geez indeed. When I was that age we'd just go down to the creek and tossed dirt clods at each another 'til someone got their head laid open and ran home bawling. Closest thing to a "Geek" back then was an AV Nerd.

The only game system I have (sold everything else) is the complate Squad Leader and Advanced Squad Leader sets. I haven't played it for years, but that bad boy was worthing keeping.

Gamma World! I'd forgotten about that one. I also liked Metamorphosis Alpha, which preceded it by a bit...

Man, memories, memories.
Wow, no kidding. I played Car Wars, D&D, AD&D, Champions, V&V, and the early White Wolf games but my favorite had to be Cyberpunk.

Good bye Gary. I blame you for many wasted days.
Still got all the books, hundreds of figures plus a mass of other stuff.
