Yup- me again.  Could I get a reccommendation or two for a good campground in Western SD?  We are looking for a "base camp" for a couple days- something safe (since we will leave much of our gear there and setup), something decent (with showers), and someone that doesn't mind a few guys sitting around a fire at night (or just sitting) have a beer or wto- we certainly aren't rowdy.

  Thanks!

Lots of good camping in the Black Hills area near Rapid City. State parks, National Parks, National Forest, etc... Plenty of private campgrounds are also available.

I camped at a state park, I believe, close to a small lake, and it was very nice. Sorry I can't place it exactly, been a few years. Camped at Sheridan Lake, too, which was more "rustic". Also stayed at President's Campground near Custer when we had the ST-N meet there a few years ago.

If you're going in summer, plan for more crowds, traffic and less choice of available options. It also gets very hot there in summer, with relief only at the higher altitudes in the Black Hills.

You might also consider renting a cabin for a bit more security for the gear left behind while you explore the twisties and scenery.

There are ST-N members living in the area, I believe. Maybe they'll chime in.

Beautiful area, great riding and interesting places to visit. Have fun.

The city park in Spearfish is great. The KOA in Custer is pretty good for a private park as is the KOA just east of Keystone.

There's a nice little motel in Custer, the Mile Hi Motel - the rooms are like little cabins and go for $39 a night. Very clean....nice place to base out of for a weekend of riding. Lots of camping in the area, just a suggestion for a bit more security leaving your stuff behind.

We stayed at this campground. We were having a group ride for another board. The people were great. The cabins were nice.

Most the forest service campgrounds are nice and have showers. Usually a pretty decent crowd too. They are relatively primitive, but nice and "woodsy" If you want soemthing better that the Rushmore KOA is nice as is The Rafter-J south of hill city. Both have a small store, pool, etc. You will see a "no motorcycle allowed" sign at rafter J, just ignore it. It refers to dirtbikes in the campground, but has confused some people. Don't worry about anti-bike attitudes either, they show you to your campsite on a transalp 250 Smile  If you really want to rough it you can pull off on any fire road in the national forest and set up camp, no open fires though. Let me know what type of palce you are interested in and I can get you more info.
