My company has now blocked YouTube. No surprise to anyone, but interestingly, rather than just nanny-block it, it looks like they hosed the DSN on purpose, so it just tries and tries and tries...

It's a good way to cut down the bitching, I think. No one's going to call and say, "Hello, help desk. Yeah, my internet is really slow. YouTube won't even come up."  Lol

Ugh.

Yeah, I block all the streaming sites I can.  It's amazing the sheer amount of time people spend watching videos if they can.  I could care less if people want to get canned for watching movies, but it severely stresses our internet connection which directly impacts me and my job.

Funny they get a DNS error though Bigsmile  I like people to know if a site is being actively blocked.  Cuts down on support calls cause they know it's not broken.

EEK! I'd die if YouTube got blocked here.  Lol

A couple of weeks ago it wouldn't come up here at the office but people outside of the office weren't having any problems. My boss (head of development) emailed the head of IT:

"Did you guys block YouTube???!?!!!???"

IT head replied "No."

My boss: "Thank god! Crisis averted!"

Haha. I love my boss.

Same here, our email and business processes flow over the same connection. I guess I could allow YouTube and the other one million radio/TV/video streaming sites and then just tell the president his email and financials from Corporate Headquarters can not get through because Joe Bob is watching videos on YouTube. One by one half of our employees would be sent packing. I think its just easier to block the site.  Bigsmile I throw up a very large (full screen) page in red that says "THIS SITE BLOCKED DURING BUSINESS HOURS".

x2.

actually, a few days ago, the site must have let that through, because all those normally-blank areas in posts had stuff in 'em!!

Sadly, no more now.

Hehe... i personally don't give a shit if people listen to MP3s via a CD or something.  What I don't accept is people putting their friggin' music and videos on the network stores and then whining when it magically disappears.  Storage and especially backup space is not for your friggin' pirated mp3s.  Guess I could be a total dick and block all USB ports and CD drives....

Exactly, they can't possibly block all the sites! And hell, even the MILF section on Craigslist will get you some entertaining E mail!

You must work for our IT department because all of our USB ports are disabled and we have very limited access to the Internet.  Most sites are blocked, including You Tube, Facebook, or any site similar to Sport-Touring.Net that contains a forum.  No fun allowed, now get back to work!

Nah, not yet.  There are a number of people that actually need the USB.  I may have to pretty soon though, it's just about audit time and one of the things on my list is checking the feasibility of it.  I've got to pretty much rebuild the IT department including infrastructure so there are more pressing issues.

There are some pretty good software packages out there that will let you authorize specific USB devices for specific users on specific machines. It makes good sense if you have any concern about data theft or people running U3 apps from company resources.
