I've seen em -- good looking maps, for certain, with a reasonable emphaisis on good roads --

if they cover the area you're interested in, they're a good deal

If they ever improve their west coast coverage, they might be worth checking out.

Until then, guess we'll have to stick with the Destination Highways books, though they're not as easy to use for navigation while you're ON the bike.  They are pretty good for identifying roads you might want to visit.

I've referred to http://www.motorcycleroads.us/ a number of times when planning trips.

Motorcycleroads.us, byways.org or even the regionals for this forum will work!  What I do is copy a map out of my atlas, search the websites and highlight all possible scenic roads and then ride off to see them.  If you want, have the copies laminated as well.  Works very well and cheap too.

I am a GPS user, travel with a folding map on the tank bag.  But for scoping out an area I a big fab of DeLORME's Gazetteer books.

The pages are big the scale is 7/16" = 1 mile...
For instance, if you bought two of the same book, pull out the pages put them on the wall Wisconsin would be 11 square feet.

I just ordered and received the US Mid-South group 5 books which bring my total to nine of these resources.

Mid-South Set includes:
Kentucky
North Carolina
South Carolina
Tennessee
Virginia

The package included a cool box to allow them to stand on the shelf.

Admittedly they are combersome if you are routed across the state but if you want to see what is around you and look for out of the way roads they can not be beat.

I like the coverage they provide as well and WISH they'd print them in standard size. As is, they are just too dang big to travel with - won't fit in a tankbag (none of mine anyways) so how to carry them? I do plan to buy one to use at the house just to look at, but wish they'd shrink them down to carrying size.

You are correct they are not good for riding and looking at.  But for planning they are great.  Mine stay in my top case.

I have had good success pulling the GPS numbers off the book and pluging them in the gps.  Photo copies from the book or regular folding maps end up on my tank bag.    What end up in the tank bag ususlly takes a beating.

I have spoken with a few guys who actually rip out pages, but I think that is such a waste.
