I'm thinking about re-locating to Nevada in '07, and wonder if any STN'ers could offer some opinions on the state from the
perspective of a motorcycling enthusiast. In particular, I'm wondering about the Reno/Carson City area on the one hand, vs. Las
Vegas on the other. Thanks.

Headscratch I don't mean to sound like a wise guy, so please don't take this personally, but have you looked at maps of the respective areas?

Reno and Carson City are minutes away from mountain twisties around Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, plus numerous mountain roads to the southwest in California.

From riders I know who have moved the area, Minden is highly recommended as a place to live.

Smile Again, I'm not trying to be a smart-***, but I think if you look at a map, especially one that shows state and local roads, it will be easier to make your decision, from a rider's perspective.

Reno is outstanding for moutainous twisties (think Sierra Nevada mountains, like Fred said).  It's also close to Virginia City, which has some spectacular desert scenery twisties.  Also, good access to fun routes like Gerlach/Pyramid Lake...straight desert but beautiful.

Las Vegas is more straight desert roads.  The Valley of Fire State Park is nearby, with some gorgeous twisties and truly jawdropping rock formations.  Coming back into California has Death Valley State Park very close...awesome riding there, especially now that they're re-opened most of the roads after the big flood there a couple of years ago.  Really great off-roading, too, if you're into that.  Las Vegas is also closer to Arizona, which has some great twisties after you spend a day crossing the desert to get there. Lol The Prescott/Sedona area in particular is very nice.

I'd honestly be hard pressed to choose between the two, if all else were equal.  I think most people would go Reno in a heartbeat, but I really love the desert.   Inlove  Eh, I'd probably still choose Reno.  They're really only one long day of riding apart, anyway.   Thumbsup

Also, heading north of Las Vegas on I-15 for about two hours will get you into southern Utah which may be some of the best riding in the entire country.  Think of Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Cedar Breaks, etc...

Thanks for posting those photos, bluepoof. I'll have to take a ride up there soon to see it for myself.
