I've been testing the prototype for a few weeks now.

It sort of goes back to this topic
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,8910.0.html

The manufacturer of the insert ended up making three versions.  The conservative.  The X and one that it an oval ring around the edge with a centre that comes on with the brake lights.

They are an insert that fits straight into the stock reflector = takes about 3 minutes to fit, and it is non destructive - you can return it to the bulb whenever you want.

The conservative model has a distribution pattern that looks like the bulb's only brighter.  To to that takes real engineering.  It doesn't look like a lumpy group of LEDs under a cover.  The colour is even and bright from all angles.

The manufacturer has a PhD in automotive engineering.  The insert runs cool, the LEDs line up with the dimples in the lens, and it has 5 white LEDs on the reverse side for number plate illumination.  You can run the stock lens or one of the clear lenses.

The picture below shows why I did it.  The reflective coating burns off because basically these were never designed to have the headlight / taillight on for daylight use.  When the coating goes like this you are less visible than a bicycle.  The other problem is that there is no redundancy.  Loose a bulb and you're invisible.  There are dozens of LEDs in the new ones so you have a lot to break before you lose redundancy, and they are so well engineered they probably won't break.

What is it about Buell's source of lighting?

It kind of irritates me that Buell got such cheap yet important safety part of an otherwise great product.

These are off an Italian motor scooter.  The whole assembly including the lens costs around $25.  Just having two bulbs would be infinity times safer.

The Ulysses already has an LED tailight.  Will it fit on the other XBs?

I'ts completely different housing to the firebolt lightning and 1125R.  Didn't know it was LED though, thanks for that.  From the parts book the 08 Uly taillamp seems to be a sealed unit.  The lens isn't a separate item.  It also has a separate number plate light with a bulb.

Just been released:

The LED insert is much safer than the standard tail-light.  We have worked with Ecliptech to produce a low cost insert that bolts in in a few minutes to replace the bulb with an LED panel, that gives the safety and redundancy of multiple LEDs instead of a single filament.

The LEDs on the front of the panel are pure red dual brightness LEDs that give a light output superior to the stock bulb, but are still roadworthy.  There are three ultra white LEDs on the rear of the panel to provide number plate illumination on the XB models that use this feature of the taillight assembly.  We cannot find a camera that can show the pure red without some yellow.  There is no yellow in real life. The image here has been colour equalised  so that it looks more like the real insert.  Check out  http://www.eclipze.com.au/bbl/main.html to see images that have not been processed.  Remember the yellow shown in those photograhs is actually pure red.

The LEDs are wide angle.  They can be seen all of the way around to the side, way better than the bulb is seen.  Again better visibility and better safety.

With a design life of around 10 years, these inserts can easily be more cost effective than the periodic replacement of the lamp housing and bulb.  The boards are coated and have a high resistance to weather and dust.  The LEDs have been placed to match with the indentations in the tail light lens.  The quality is first rate.

The designer has a PhD in automotive engineering, and has significant industrial experience with major motor vehicle manufacturers.  Ecliptech has been successfully producing LED taillights for motorcycles for the last 4 years.  This Buell XB insert is their latest version.

It is simple to fit and includes clear instructions.  The wires are colour coded and clip straight into the existing wiring.

3 versions are available.  Classic - which imitates the bulb, except of course it is better.  The Halo - which is a ring around the edge with extra LEDs in the middle that light up when the brake light comes on, and the LED-X, which is an X pattern across the lens.  All three look fantastic with a clear lens.

The packaging states XB12X, which needs to be corrected.  The Uly has a different housing and it seems that it has LEDs already.

I saw them when we had finished protyping and ready to go into production.  I only got them done because I thought that the orginals were dangerous.  If I'd see they existed I may not have bothered.

Last I looked, ours are much cheaper to Aus riders at least, but I think to all.  It is an insert, non destructive so you can turn your bike back to stock.  It has an integrated number plate light while XB lights needs an addition for a Firebolt.  Because it it a flatpack and not an entire taillight assembly it is cheaper to post.  The LEDs are arranged at optimum focal distance from the lens, and the LEDs match the dimples in the stock and the Clear Alternatives lenses.  I guess now you have a choice.  They are selling pretty well.

Hello, I own a 2007 XB12SS and just purchased this LED upgrade.

I would like to let everyone know how easy it was to switch out with the stock unit due to the simple instructions and picture diagrams.  The workmanship and quality is top notch and even backed by a warranty.  I feel a lot better knowing that my tail light will not fail or deteriorate over time like the stock unit.

Thanks again for a quality product!
