Roads in Grand County Colorado

Just to let everybody know that the roads up here have taken a beating this winter. Hwy 30 (Berthoud Pass) on the west side is having some problems in the switchbacks with the road coming appart. Hwy 125 out of Granby also has some bad areas in the corners. I have not ridden Hwy 134 yet or Rabbit Ears Pass. Of course Trail Ridge is still closed and they are trying to get it open by Memorial Day weekend, but it keeps snowing up here. With the snow comes the gravel and there is still alot of it on the roads. So be careful out there.

Thanks for the info. I am dying to go up in the mountains but it is too scary with the snow or should I say the gravel after the snow.

We were in Nederland, in the car, last weekend. There was still a lot of snow on the ground with more coming Monday.
We've taken the bike on the Peak to Peak twice and up through Boulder Canyon. The roads were clear on the P2P, but there was snow on the ground. The view at the top is great.
I love it here. We moved to Longmont in Dec. It's odd to see the sun shining and the snow coming down.
I rode my G'Wing out last of March and have been riding about every weekend since. But, we aren't in the high country either.

Well crap. Me and a buddy are heading to Colorado in just a few days. Was hoping to do Trail Ridge Road, but I guess it's still closed. Hope they get it open quick. Our home base will be Denver, so there should be plenty of other "day trip" routes we can hit from there.
We're planning on riding up to the top of Pikes Peak as well if weather allows. I've never been up there.
This is the earliest that I've ever been to Colorado. I've dealt with cold weather before, but never had to worry about closed roads.
Thanks for the road update.

Take a look at
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,19397.0.html
It's worth remembering that even if a high pass has been opened, there is still deep snow almost everywhere up high.
That means that it melts during the day and often runs across the road.
It then freezes at night.
If you meet some of it (clear water ice on the road, sometimes in a corner) on the following morning, you WILL fall off.
This is not to say 'stay away', but be very, very careful up high.

"Was hoping to do Trail Ridge Road, but I guess it's still closed."
Our local paper here in Grand County just posted some photos of the snow removal of Trail Ridge. They reported that there are drifts 25 feet high. They hope to have it open on Memorial day weekend. From the photos there looks like a lot of snow up there. Most likely when it is open all people will see is walls of snow.

Just another update on the roads. I learned that they are going to be repaving the first 14 miles of Hwy 125 from Granby this summer. I do not know yet when they are going to start. Also they are going to be cutting all the dead trees down along the highway so watch out for logging trucks and all the tree parts on the highway.
